Click through to see the images. Many of you may remember seeing anatomical relief models while at the doctor, dentist, or even in biology class. These are usually models of the heart, brain, head, jaw, arm, etc. that one can hold in your hands and are used to explain anatomical features of a particular body part or biological system. While 2-dimensional pictures are adequate, actually holding a model of something you are trying to learn more about helps picture how things work together. A 2-dimensional picture of a nematocyst. Now with the aid of 3D printing, you can print out your own anatomical relief model of a nematocyst. These are great tools for showing students how a nematocyst stings its target. The model on Thingiverse shows a nematocyst in three phases of deployment: Before deployment: the harpoon is packed within its capsule During deployment: the capsule pressurizes, swinging open the operculum ("trap door" holding the harpoon inside), and beginning deployment of the poison-filled thread After deployment: the poison-filled thread is deployed and embedded in the target that brushed up against the nematocyst. These models are excellent for those of us that talk to students about coral anatomy and make fantastic visual aids for better understanding how cnidarians use nematocysts to feed and defend themselves from predators. A big "Thank you!" to Daniel Newman from the Natural Science Illustration program at the Rhode Island School of Design and Casey Dunn for making the model available on Thingiverse. best way to start up new tank water?
Harlequinmania replied to dachkie's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi Bro, Got the same headache like you as well during my setting up, since my tank is about the same volume as yours and here is some of my recommendation and hopefully it helps . 1) Buy bottled distilled water for salt mix for initial setup if RO/DI is a big investment for you. 2) If you are afraid of parasites on new rocks , you can consider using dead rock or "Cook" your rock prior to using it. Do some search here or google it will give you some info on it. 3) On average a normal 4 stage RO/DI will last you about 250 liters before a change. The DI resin need to be change faster, but the carbon is able to last longer. 4) Use NSW to cycle the tank for at least 30 days, so if there is any chance of parasites the cycles will be gone without any host. After which do a major water change with salt mix to bring up the parameter. 5) Consider using artificial rock instead of "Live" one. -

Click through to see the images. Maintaining a nice saltwater aquariums is hard work. You have to perform regular water changes, maintain the protein skimmer, pumps, heaters, regularly replace lights, make sure the temperature, pH, salinity, calcium, etc. are all within optimum ranges. What if you could do away with all of that work? With Robo Fish you can - at least that is what one Japanese toymaker believes. Earlier this year, Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. demonstrated the Robo Fish at the 2012 International Tokyo Toy Show in aquariums filled with rock, substrate, and artificial plants. Each robo-fish is neutrally buoyant and is powered by two watch batteries, which allow the fish's tail to fan back and forth allowing it move forward, up and down through the water column in a random fashion. The movements are surprisingly reminiscent of a fish foraging for food. While the fish's movements are not perfect, it is an interesting option for those that want an artificial tank. Currently the fish toys are only available in Japan and will set you back ¥ 2,900 or $37 per fish. (via Rocket News 24) View the full article

Acropora sirikitiae: A newly described species
Harlequinmania posted a topic in General Reefkeeping_
Click through to see the images. The newly described species Acropora sirikitiae is a close relative to Acropora divaricata. It was named in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Queen Regent of Thailand. A.sirikitiae features arborescent (branching) growth form and large, bulbous radial corallites (see right). Its distribution ranges from "the Andaman Sea reefs extending along Thailand’s western coastline, from the region of the Adang-Rawi island group in the south to the Surin Islands in the north." Field surveys show this newly described species is abundant in western Thailand. Acropora sirikitiae is officially described in a research paper published on Phuket Marine Biological Center's website describes. We also found an interesting tangential discussion within the paper mentioning at least five species of corals have been recently removed from the genus Acropora to the genus Isopora. One such species is a SPS reefkeepers may recognize: Acropora Isopora brueggemanni. Click through to see the images. By now, everyone in the marine aquarium hobby should know that next year MACNA will be held in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. Some may recall that 12 years ago, MACNA was also held in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. What only a few remember though, was that at that particular show, Gary Meadows (husband to Joy Meadows and father to Jeremy Meadows) passed away unexpectedly. At the time, Gary and Joy Meadows operated Harbor Aquatics, a greenhouse based liverock, coral, and fish vendor in Valparaiso, Indiana. More recently, many would recognize Joy from her work with PFO Lighting and now Reef Brite. She has been a fixture in this hobby/industry for many, many years appearing at shows and events all across the US. With the return of MACNA to South Florida, MASNA is proud to announce the creation of MASNA’s Gary Meadows Memorial Reef in conjunction with the Coral Restoration Foundation in Gary's memory. At the banquet for this year’s MACNA in Dallas-Fort Worth, Steven Pro President of MASNA presented a check for $2,500 to Ken Nedimyer of CRF. MASNA’s goal is to raise at least an additional $2,500 during the course of the year. Details will be provided shortly as soon as the mechanics of making a donation are worked out. MASNA is very pleased to be able to provide this in honor of Gary’s memory. View the full article

Click through to see the images. Friday, I wrote about how Member of Parliament Bob Katter wanted to place a $10 bounty on every crown-of-thorns starfish as an added incentive for recreational divers to kill these dreaded reef predators. As it turns out, findings this week by researchers may make this bounty obsolete. The results are published in the September issue of the journal Diseases of Aquatic Organisms. Thiosulfate-citrate-bile-sucrose (TCBS)-induced disease in Acan - thaster planci: signs, transmission, recovery. (A) diseased A. planci showing loss of turgor, necrotic tissue, mucus, and matting of spines; ( healthy Linckia guildingi in contact with diseased and dead A. planci; (C, D) lesions on L. guildingi after direct contact with diseased A. planci; (E, F) recovered lesions on L. guildingi. Drs. Rivera-Posada and Pratchett of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University, were on the beach at Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef when they had their "Ah-ha!" moment. As they were surveying the crown-of-thorns starfish invasion, Dr Rivera-Posada wondered if the protein mixture he was using back in the lab to grow Vibrio spp. bacteria might somehow give the naturally occurring Vibrio spp. in the starfish a boost to the point that they could kill their host starfish. This common microbiology agar, called thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar (TCBS), was injected into crown-of-thorns starfish back in the lab and within 24 hours the starfish were falling apart from Vibrio spp. infection. To see how safe the injected crown-of-thorns starfish were to other starfish species, Linckia guildingi starfish were placed in aquariums with both injected and non-injected crown-of-thorns starfish to observe if the infection would pass across species. While lesions formed on the arms of L. guildingi from the injected tank, 100% of them recovered within 15-47 days after exposure. While it is still early, this route of eradication has a lot of potential. For example, divers can only inject 40 crown-of-thorns starfish in a single dive using sodium bisulfate. However, using TCBS they can inject up to 500 starfish per dive. In an interview with the AAP, Dr Rivera-Posada gave a sobering idea of how dire things are: "In the Philippines they removed as many as 87,000 starfish from a single beach. This gives you an idea of the numbers we have to deal with... Any attempts to control these outbreaks will be futile without also addressing the root cause of outbreaks, including loss of starfish predators as well as increased nutrients that provide food for larval starfishes." While this eradication method is a huge leap forward, there is still a long way to go. View the full article

Click through to see the images. Yoda purpurata, along with three other new acorn worms species were discovered 1.5 miles under the Atlantic Ocean during a recent survey of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. All of the species were discovered on or just slightly above the seafloor, photographed, and then collected by an underwater ROV for later description. The new species are described in the latest issue of Invertebrate Biology. Yoda purpurata was named by Nick Holland, the world authority on enteropneusts, due to its resemblance to Jedi Master Yoda. However the large appendages are not ears - they are lips. Yoda purpurata joins the growing list of new species named after celebrities including Gnathia marleyi, a fish parasite, that is named after the late reggae singer Bob Marley. View the full article
