The newly discovered species of freshwater darter are all from the genus Etheostoma, commonly known as "darters," although several other genera also have "darters" in them as well. This genus typically contains very colorful fish that show bright color variations from orange, blue, green, yellow, and red and range in size from less than an inch to two to three inches in length. As mentioned, the five new species are named after four Presidents (both past and present) and one former Vice President. These elected officials' names were selected as each worked hard to promote environmental protection and conservation during their time in office. The newly named species (also pictured to the right) are: Highland darter, Etheostoma teddyroosevelt Bluegrass darter, Etheostoma jimmycarter Beaded darter, Etheostoma clinton Cumberland darter, Etheostoma gore Spangled darter, Etheostoma obama Each of the fish, both above and to the right, are described in the paper published recently in the Bulletin of the Alabama Museum of Natural History "Morphological diversity and phylogenetics of the darter subgenus Doration (Percidae: Etheostoma), with descriptions of five new species" by Layman and Mayden. The five elected leaders join an ever growing list of politicians and celebrities such as Bob Marley , Yoda, and Liv Tyler (a beetle, seriously?), that have species named after them. 10. Look like a Turbellarian infection to me since the body is covered with black spot. If It is already in a QT tank, maybe you can try to treat it with Cupramine - copper which is one of most effective treatment for parasites . Start with a very small dosage since the fish is already very stress now, and slowly increase it over a course of few day. If you do not have a properly filtration system in your QT tank, do a small volume water change daily and notice for the next few day. Some info on this disease can be found on this link ; http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/compldiagnodisease/a/aa041701.htm

  12. Marine Life park set to open tomorrow 22 th Nov. AsiaOne Tuesday, Nov 20, 2012 SINGAPORE - Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) announced today that its Marine Life Park (MLP) will open to the public on Thursday, Nov 22. Both attractions will be opened from 10am to 6pm daily, while operating hours for the S.E.A Aquarium will be from 10am to 7pm from Dec 8 onwards. Tickets to the S.E.A Aquarium are priced at $29 for each adult and $20 each for children and senior citizens. Entry to the Adventure Cove Waterpark is the same price. But not all attractions at the park will be opened on Thursday. As such, visitors will be given rebates of a $5 meal voucher for every ticket purchased, valid for use at RWS. Visitors will also not get to see the dolphins on Thursday - even as the first batch arrived yesterday - because they are in quarantine. The park, which is set to have its grand opening on Dec 7, will eventually have 25 dolphins. The media had a special sneak preview today. 17. Click through to see the images. Over the last several months, I blogged about 3D printing and how it is useful to our hobby. I showed that with a 3D printer, one can build: Venturi injectors Nori clips Mixing eductors Seahorse feeders Two different frag plugs and fragging equipment Sponge filters Brine shrimp hatcheries Now I would like to showcase some of the things other aquarium keepers have made for their aquariums: Neptune System Lunar Simulator LED mounting bracket Thingiverse member Tracy Ireland wanted an easy way to mount his Neptune Systems Aqua Controller Lunar Simulator LEDs (LSM) on an aquarium. He tried different ways of attaching it ranging from double-sided sticky tape and a couple other options but nothing really "worked" well for him so he turned to his 3D printer to print a bracket to fit the bill. The end result was a 3D printed L-bracket that he could attach to his aquarium hood with nylon screws. Aquarium overflow splash cap and adapter Salt creep is always a problem when working with overflows, especially when overflowing multiple breeding tanks into a central filtration system. The typical setup is to have a larger diameter central drain pipe that individual breeding aquariums drain into and then the water drains into the sump. These individual tanks have smaller overflow pipes that just sit inside a T-fitting plumbed into the larger diameter drain pipe. This makes it easy to remove the tank for maintenance but does create salt creep problems over time. Most people will either just deal with the salt creep or will drill a schedule 80 cap and place the overflow pipe into it. However, Darren Nancarrow of Perth, Australia (aka "CaptCrash" on Thingiverse.com and the Marine Breeding Initiative forums) decided to save a bit of money and 3D print his own custom salt creep inhibiting caps. These caps split in half and fit snuggly around the overflow pipe and seat down over the larger T-fitting on the drain pipe. There's an interesting thread running right now on the MBI's forums about how Darren is using these caps on his 525-gallon breeding system. Aquarium filter bearing for Penguin Bio-Wheel 200 Sometimes parts are lost over time and the only thing a person can do is cobble together something or buy a replacement part either from the manufacturer or from eBay. Or if you have a 3D printer, you can model and print a replacement part immediately. Thingiverse member John Ridley lost a filter bearing to his Penguin Bio-Wheel 200 filter recently. Instead of buying a replacement, he printed one which just slid right into place. Hose Clamp - Pinch Valve Hose clamps are useful for all sorts of applications for our aquariums. Drip acclimating new fish is one example. Controlling the drip rate of a jug of kalkwasser is another. A person could purchase hose clamps for these applications or they could just 3D print any number of them. Given that 3D prints are virtual models before they are printed, a person can scale the model larger or smaller for any size hose they need. Breeding Tube & Mount Angelfish will breed on a variety of surfaces. Thingiverse user Josh McCullough had a pair of angelfish that liked to spawn on their Eheim filter pipe but a "mystery fish" was eating the eggs after lights-out. He transferred the pair to a 30-gallon aquarium and fabricated a holder to hold a 1.5-inch pipe for the fish to spawn on in the center of their tank. Bonus: A Barrel of Octopuses Game This is one I designed and while not necessarily for your aquarium, it allows you to geek out a bit with an aquarium-themed game. This game harkens back to the 1965 Barrel of Monkeys game originally made by Lakeside Toys (now made by Milton Bradley). Each game came with a colored barrel and twelve monkeys the same color as the barrel. The instructions of the game stated: "Dump monkeys onto table. Pick up one monkey by an arm. Hook other arm through a second monkey's arm. Continue making a chain. Your turn is over when a monkey is dropped." My version uses twelve octopuses instead of monkeys and features a custom octopus graphic on both the top and bottom of the barrel. How many can you pick up? View the full article

From the Boca Raton Fire Rescue: At approximately 2:55pm Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services Department responded to a report of structure fire at a single family home located at 301 S.W. 3rd Street. Black smoke was seen exiting the home by the first arriving Firefighters. They had to force entry into the house since the occupants were not at home. Firefighters saved a dog, several birds that were in two cages, and even three tropical fish from the one room fire and heavy smoke inside the structure. The fire was immediately extinguished preventing further damage to the home. The aquarium electrical equipment is under investigation as the possible cause of the fire. Fortunately, no people were harmed in what could have potentially been a catastrophic fire if not for the bravery of firefighters. This story serves as a clear reminder to install GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupters) on your aquarium gear. [via bocanewsnow.com] View the full article

He's affixed zoanthids, xenias, et. al. to his back glass; In a few short months, his cube reef display should be wall-to-wall corals. If this Portuguese and last week's Spanish reef videos are any indication, Western Europeans enjoy creating mixed reef aquariums stocked with a balance of soft and stony corals.
