Researchers have carried out a full sample on more than 50 meadows of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceánica in the Balearic islands. They carried out a chemical analysis on the stalks of these marine plants, which enabled them to identify the sources of natural and man-made trace metals over the past 30 years in the Mediterranean. This study shows that seagrass meadows can be used as an alternative tool for studying environmental conditions of the past as part of the research into climate change. View the full article

For the first time, a study has settled the debate: some large marine reptiles were warm-blooded (in other words, they were endothermic), giving them a considerable advantage to swim fast over long distances and to conquer cold regions. BirdLife International has announced, in the 2010 IUCN Red List update for birds, the extinction of Alaotra Grebe Tachybaptus rufolavatus. Restricted to a tiny area of east Madagascar, this species declined rapidly after carnivorous fish were introduced to the lakes in which it lived. This, along with the use of nylon gill-nets by fisherman which caught and drowned birds, has driven this species into the abyss. View the full article
