Scientists have discovered direct evidence of the diet of an important group of Ammonites, which are among the best known fossils. Using synchrotron X-rays, they imaged three fossilized mouths with micrometric resolution, digitally reconstructing the fossils' jaws and teeth in their complete form. In one specimen, they discovered fossilized plankton in the mouth. Knowledge about the diet of Ammonites may bring new insight into why these marine invertebrates became extinct, 65.5 million years ago. View the full article

An extensive investigation of South American Corydoras catfish, reveals that catfish communities, although containing almost identically colored and patterned fish, could actually contain three or more different species. Establishing for the first time that many species are mimetic, this discovery suggests that in many cases the number of Corydoras catfish species may be higher than previously recognized, with consequent implications for environmentalists charged with protecting environmental diversity and safeguarding the species. The epic ocean-spanning journeys of the gigantic leatherback turtle in the South Atlantic have been revealed for the first time thanks to groundbreaking research using satellite tracking. Experts in the UK led a five-year study to find out more about these increasingly rare creatures and inform conservation efforts. View the full article

Examination of deep sea corals reveals that there have been drastic changes to oceanic currents in the western North Atlantic since the 1970s. The influence of the cold water Labrador Current, which is in periodic interchange with the warm Gulf Stream, has been decreasing continually since the 1970s. Occurring at the same time as Global Warming this phenomenon is unique in the past 2000 years. View the full article

i see that you are planing to use filter sock in you sump.. Prehapes you might want to consider having a "shield" over the compartment in case your filter socks choke and overflow out of your sump. Previously i had a choked filter bag while i was oversea and ended up with water flowing out of my sump flooding my living room. Luckily my parent came in time to save my fishes...

Care Level: Easy Temperament: Semi-aggressive Lighting: Moderate Waterflow: Medium Placement: Middle to Top Water Conditions: 72-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.023-1.025 Color Form: Green, Tan Origin: Fiji, Indonesia, Solomon Islands Family: Zoanthidae The Zoanthus Colony Polyp Corals are also referred to as Sea Mats, or Button Polyps. They are colonial animals with multiple individual polyps attached to a piece of live rock. These polyps have the ability to sting other polyps or corals. While the sting is not strong, they are semi-aggressive and need to have space between their colony and any neighbors since they tend to crowd them out. They are easy to maintain, making them a good choice for beginner reef aquarists. They require a moderate light level combined with a medium water movement within the aquarium. For continued good health, they will also require the addition of iodine and other trace elements to the water. They will reproduce easily in the reef aquarium by budding (splitting off a portion of their base or mouth), which will increase the size of their colony. They contain the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae which provide almost all of their nutritional requirements. Especially if the lighting is not optimal, they should be fed micro-plankton or baby brine shrimp. ** Extracted from liveaquaria.com

An influx of invasive species can stop the dominant natural process of new species formation and trigger mass extinction events, according to new research. The study of the collapse of Earth's marine life 378 to 375 million years ago suggests that the planet's current ecosystems, which are struggling with biodiversity loss, could meet a similar fate. Researchers and the salmon industry have been debating whether fingerling (young fish) from freshwater farms can be a source of the virus that causes pancreas disease (PD): salmonid alfavirus (SAV). The results of a new doctoral study show that this is not the case: pancreas disease transmits horizontally in the seawater phase and infection in fresh water has little bearing on how the disease spreads. Infectious pancreatic necrosis is a serious disease that leads to enormous losses in the salmon industry each year. The virus that causes the disease, IPN, is very prevalent in farmed salmon and trout in Norway. The virus attacks a wide diversity of hosts and has been found to occur in many different fish species, in addition to shellfish and molluscs. Fish that survive an IPN infection often become bearers of the virus and these fish are a potential source of infection to other individuals. View the full article
