Browning of SPS is due to buildup in zooxanthellae in their tissue. Excess nutrients can cause this buildup or insufficient lighting can cause the SPS to develop more zooxanthellae from a nutrition standpoint. Its not dead. Dead is when the tissue sloughs off & exposes the white skeleton beneath.

Little ironies of SPS keeping
JMW replied to christan1959's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Higher KH drives higher rate of calcification, so relatively higher nutrients allow coral tissue to grow at a rate which prevents tip issues. For ULNS systems, having that a high KH typically results in tip issues as the tissue growth rate doesn't match calcification rates brought about by high KH values. SPS are known to benefit from feeding, but of course with the food being added to the system, excess food should be exported before they break down into excessive nutrients & imbalance the whole system. It's really a delicate balance the way I see it, hope this helps. -
Didn't realize this random acro frag that I got months ago has got such intricate skin patterns! Exquisite! This was how it looked when first added to the tank

Read somewhere before that over dosing can also result in molting issues for inverts such as shrimp/crabs.. so yeah let's dose with caution & observe our reef

I dose a few drops in my 10G every few days. Have Xenia & macroalge in my DT, so they consume quite abit of it. I used to first problems with tips problems on my SPS, after dosing iodine things improved for me. I can't measure how much iodine is in my water though, so a dose lesser than the recommended amount & observe

FYI that nassarius snails aren't prolific eaters of diatoms, they tend to consume more detritus & uneaten food. Plus I noticed yours is a bare bottom tank with minimal sand. diatoms are usually attributed to silicates which can come with either water source, sand or rocks. They go away once the silicates are consumed over time, provided husbandry is upkept. If there's an urgent need to get rid of them however, consider getting trochus or astrea snails instead..
