well, as for mi , my canister is a pure biological tower and i wash them monthly when i need to change the media. i put PURA complete amd PURA nitratelock. er, some of the reefer use it for sole biological purposes and i recommend biohome . but biohome require slow flow rate to work , so u might consider getting one with flowrate not so high. enjoy reefing

not necessary ur nitrate must be 0. as long as ur ammonia and nitrite is 0 after the spike should be okie le. with that u must have good testkit to comfirm whether ur cycling is over
