was using Nutrafin Cycle during my cycling too ...but my cycling took very long dun really know whether it help i think the best way is to get some cure live rock and sand from fellow reefer to kickstart the process....

the brown stuff that u mention may be diatom ... that is due to nigh nitrate and silicate ... lotsa interesting stuff during cycling such as worm and crab die due to high ammonia ... maybe water may turn cloudy ... how big is ur tank ?? -

maybe u can take a few filter medium from some fellow reefer and put it in ur canister to kkickstart the cycling... that will be a bit faster as bacteria multiplying rate is very fast ....
