  1. 1) yes it could be due to lack of oxygen. even some claimed their LS is totally wipe out when their skimmer shut down on them. however do a test on the basic paramater such as ammonia and nitraite, nitrate before confirming. 2)there's a possibility that the anemones will eat the clownfish if they are injured and as a result lost their slimy secretion on their body. anemones are one of the most difficult invertebrate to keep in captive as it require intense lighting , preferably a metal halide to satisfy it's light craving nature. if ur lighting is great, there will no need for special food to administer to it. however some reefer prefer to handfeed them with little prawns or fishes. however this is not a compromise for their light demanding nature. 3)depending how efficient is your hang on filter. IMO, they are not as useful. a minimun of external canister should be employ for marine hobby. 15%-20 % per week should be good for general system. 4) nitrate is generally high when ur ammonia is high since it come from there anyway. which mean ur bioload will determines the nitrate level. what ever u added to ur tank will increase nitrate too. such as tap water, unrealiable salt mix , uneaten food, whatever is decomposing, fishes's poo and many many more . one of the safest wat to lower nitrate is water change even though some like to use chemical such as AZ-NO3. AZ-NO3 is generally a temp. solution and require u to have a good skimmer for it to work , however you should find the source of ur ammonia . watch ur tank's bioload and whatever u add in ur tank hope it's help you. enjoy reefing
  2. i am sure many reefer here do not have a sump and their system is running well . but a sump have many advantage over those who don't have . while a basic aquarium has a protein skimmer and a external filter, the biological purification can be done achieved by using another natural method making use of live rocks. live rock basically are rock collected from the wild with living organism already in situ. the base material is usually of a labyrinthine, highly porous nature and can provide space for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite and finally the less harmful nitrate. the anaerobic will then do it's job to convert nitrate to nitrogen gases which will dissipated into the atmosphere. in the berlin method, emphasis are placed on the usage of live rocks and skimmer to rid it effectively of unwanted toxic stuff. the theory is that the protein skimmer removes organic matter even before they degenerate into ammonia. top notch skimmer and tons of live rocks is used in berlin . so berlin might not be a cheap alternative too. hope it help
  3. brittles stars are abundant in holes within rocks, avoiding light during the day, coming out to forage at night or whenever they smell food in the aquarium. they eat almost everything, and some are plantivores that come out at night. brittle stars are harmless to coral and do a great job or cleaning beneath rock and within gravel. guess it's okie . and they can reproduce quite fast
  4. the term live rock refers to coral rubble colonized by marine oragnisms and cleaned for reef tank use. its important characteristics are porosity, origin , cleaniness and what grow on it . live rocks from around the world differ in porosity , weight and colours. florida east coast rock is lighter while highly porous Fiji rock is very light and encrusted with purple coralline . fake rock ... hmmm.... any artificial man make rock ??
