Did I miss the start of cycle process ?
Nautical replied to Nautical's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Wow !!! alanseah is 3 years into his tank (may be longer into the hobby) .... lau chiao already .... thanks a zillion for sharing the experience. I am not even two months into the hobby. Fireclown, thanks also for advice on the kalk. Luckily no corals introduced yet. Only two fishes and live rocks. -
Generally magazine subscription in the USA is very very much cheaper than buying from our book shops in Singapore. I can attest to that as I subscribe to home theater and digital photography mags, send to my USA office and it is couriered FOC to me in Singapore. Can anyone recommend any such magazines relative to marine LS and reefkeeping. Thanks in advance.

any gd temp indicator to recommend?
Nautical replied to 19percula's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
aiyah, ever heard of singapore prime minister saying ...... "good good things not cheap, cheap cheap things not good" you have been warned -
IMHO, if there isn't much die off from the rocks, there wouldn't be a significant ammonia spike... the cycling process may have been skipped as the LR probably is able to deal with the bioload. My tank went through without a cycle process. My only advice is just have patience. If the prawn does not serves its purpose any more, why don't you just remove it. Four/five days of decay should be enough.

TANGT, why cannot see your pics. Only message next to icon of each pic is "user posted image". It's not you, it's most probably I don't have the right software to open. Any advice from anyone here. Thanks.

Hello ppl who are willing to help moron clown. If you are in his neighbourhood (which is yet to be determined), perhaps you can pm him and go by his place. Personally, ball valve, air nipple, flow rate and others are quite new to me. Also not knowing what I will encounter as I am also new to the hobby. Look at his postings, 2.00 AM in the morning But I can feel for moron clown .... so some kind soul please help him. I am sure it will be sincerely appreciated.

Did you use CURED live rocks in the first place ?

What is the difference between these?
Nautical replied to domzzz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Infinitereef, you are a fountain of knowledge. Thanks for your advice. As we get wiser, we need to find substitutes so that we don't burn a hole in our pocket. Honestly, some of the addictives/supplements sold in LFS can be quite ex. -
What is the difference between these?
Nautical replied to domzzz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I noted Infinitereef making reference to "Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate". Is this the same that ppl use for baking cakes ? Or is there one specifically for marine use. If similar as the cake making stuff, it is quite cheap .... may even steal from wife's baking ingredients ..... hehehe -

u are so right !!! i am quite confused myself, blur like sotong. sometimes i think manufacturers make small differences to entice and market their products under different brand names. -
Now this is the real thing. No photo editing. Can see Singapore skyline, shadows, water marks left by stingray on jetty floor, the jetty itself, the rope, people working and watching and the beach. I am from East Coast, so can remember Bedok jetty.

Odi, no worries. I was probably writing too much which causes the confusion. But just trying to be comprehensive. -
Did I miss the start of cycle process ?

Did not buy test kits for NH3 and NO2. I thot the nitrogen cycle will end at NO3. That being the case, if NO3 is okay, then by implications the preceding NH3 and NO2 should be okay. Am I making a wrong assumption here ? -

Thanks, ryz. I like the last two words, "Don't worry". At least I have the comfort to know that I am not alone. Indeed, I was told by LFS that the LR were cured. Thanks again. -
Odi, good question, but don't know if I have the answer. Do not want to steal RAV-65 Vincent's thread, so have started a new topic. Please go to http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=13787

To this day, I am still baffled at the development. There must be a reason for everything. Feb 13, 2004 installed my tank 3 ft x 1.5 ft x 2 ft with sump tank 2.5 ft x 1ft x 1.25 ft. Main return pump in sump. A circulation pump and wave pump in main tank. Grade #0 sand for about 2 to 3 inch of DSB. Sufficient marine salt to mix with tap water in main tank and sump. About 30 kg of live rocks. A bag of Seachem Matrix Carbon and a bag of Seachem Phosguard in the filter chamber. Lighting – something like a white PL 10000k and a blue actinic – at least I know there are two, a white and a blue. Switched on daily for 8 to 10 hours. 3rd Week - run skimmer. Introduced a clownfish, cardinal fish, blue damsel and black-white stripe damsel. The two damsels died within four days. But clown and cardinal are still surviving. 4th Week - run Resun chiller at 26C Daily check for SG (within range 1.020 to 1.022) Weekly test for kH (between 10 to 15 dkH) and pH (around 8.3). Appears water parameters per these readings are within “safety” range as indicated by test kits. Also tested twice for NO3 which measures between 20 to 15 mg/l (good reading as well) each time. Added daily a table spoon of Nitromax, this is to help build friendly bacteria in DSB and filter. From second week, on alternate days, add two table spoon of Acquamarine Nitrate Reducer. About once/twice a week, will add one teaspoon of Seachem marine buffer to maintain pH at 8.3 About once per week, add one to two teaspoon of Kalwasser. Am I doing right or missing something? Gurus or shifus, please advise. Repeat the questions: - Why is there no ammonia spike in my tank? Don’t see any evidence of having started the cycle process.

why do u need to put in a prawn to spike the ammonia and start cycling process? am i missing something here. i cycled my tank without prawns. it has already been five weeks. put a clown and a cardinal fish on fourth week, still surviving. measured NO3 at 15mg/l ; pH at 8.3 ; kH at 12dkH thot i can share and exchange with my humble experience thus far.

if purely for aesthetic purpose, then, trouble not troubles until troubles trouble you. u may want to research the attributes of these black sand before embarking on the project. can u imagine got to segregate the coloured sand if no good for tank .... to much free time izzit ? joking lah

Sorry, I dun agree with you leh. May be its a new chiller, and the noise level is very low. Thought I read in some thread that Resun improved in this noise aspect. I just monitored the cooling effect. I set chiller at 26C. When at 28C per the digital display, the chiller compressor kicks in. That's when I started timing. At five minutes later, the chiller compressor cuts off registering set temp back to 26C. Question :- is cooling period of five minutes considered slow ?
