  1. It had a sudden seizure and lost the ability to swim and died, while the others are still fine. Is this a sign of cyanide poisoning? This death is so sudden and unexpected.
  2. Have you ever encountered a coelacanth on your deep dives Narcosis1? I believe some can be encountered at the depths you dive to. Has anyone attempted to bring one to the surface?
  3. Sigh, seems like mortality of fish in public aquariums is really high too. Do public aquariums have to replace fish on a regular basis? The last time I was there was two years ago September if I recall correctly, at least 20 of them in the deepwater exhibit.
  4. I asked Henry and he told me that he already adds gelatin to the food as a binder
  5. It can potentially lead to infection. You never know how the fish is doing after it swims away.
  6. I saw them kept before in osaka aquarium before, really cool fish! Not sure how trawlers bring them up alive. If I can get hold of one I will set up a tank specially for it with a compressor chiller to reach that temp
  7. Hi Narcosis1, I'm just curious, but do you ever encounter any orange roughy, oreo dory and flashlight fish in your dives? I would love to set up a tank with all these deep sea creatures!
  8. Thanks Terryz_ for all your help! Really appreciate having advice from an experienced keeper such as yourself. Was wondering if its normal for them to go on periods of fasting for a day or two? One of mine is currently not eager to eat any of the mysis I put in the tank at night, when yesterday he was eating voraciously. He does not switch on his light like the others either but apart from that he looks ok.
  9. I started a rotifer culture in 4l of seawater 3 days ago and fed them PhytoGreen-M daily. I conducted a 20% water change daily as well. The culture tank is well aerated by an air pump. Today I noticed that the water was clear yellow instead of a murky suspension of rotifers. I noticed a thin brown layer at the bottom of the tank and presume them to be dead rotifers. Upon shining a torch into the tank I noticed some live rotifer specks but they were much fewer than before. I'm quite worried!
  10. Yeah there are some acro, Duncan, fan sponge, sea squirts, mushroom coral and tree corals. I have shaving brush algae and chaetomorpha too. I got them from new trio some time back, but unlikely they have a shipment now. When I went there a few days ago all sold. Typically in lfs they aren't active as there is no sand bed, so they curl up. Best way is to gently prod them and see if they move rapidly away. But even with sand they are not very active and stay in their burrow or hover around it.
  11. I have 3 in my tank, and my sandbed is only 2-3 in thick so what they do is bury themselves at an angle until they sometimes totally disappear. Their home cannot be disturbed or they will attempt to jump out of the tank. I feed them every morning with cyclopeeze. They seem to love it! They don't seem to like mysis as much but they do eat it and pacific krill they attempt to swallow but its too big so they eventually spit out. Strangely enough they are not territorial and even share burrows at times. I keep them with flashlight fish and orange spot filefish and they do not bother each other. I think they feed actively because their tankmates are not threatening. How many do you have?
  12. I just got mine yesterday and am feeding it live nannochloropsis which I am culturing as well as phytofeast and two little fishies marine snow. Is this an acceptable diet? Has anyone kept them before? Thanks!
  13. I noticed white lumps on my duncan coral for the past week. It opens much less frequently as well, maybe opening slightly in the evenings. What is wrong with it!
  14. Ok, as it stands, the 5 of them eat 32 cubes of frozen hikkari mysis a night to be full. The bulk of it is eaten by 2 really active and greedy ones. Seeing as how fast my stock is depleting, I'm looking at either of 3 options. 1. Stockpile vast amounts of frozen mysis. 2.Liquid mysis from jireh. Is it much more concentrated than frozen mysis? I noticed quite a fair bit of the cube is made of water. 3. Culture mysis. Could I know how to go about it? Suggestions please!
  15. Well they look like they are doing fine! Polyps out and all that. Are they ok if I just skew the cap between two rocks? The stem is dangling freely. I want to do that so that I can move them easily if I want to instead of rooting them and having to pry them out.
  16. Ok I managed to remove the corals from the plug. Just ripped them off actually. It was quite easy and the corals didn't really look very damaged at all. I will report back on how they are doing soon!
  17. Yeah I saw one of them eat pellets. And you are right their mouth is tiny, they have problems swallowing small krill even, so need micropellets. http://www.fishchannel.com/saltwater-fish/flashlight-fish.aspx This is quite a good article, the author feeds them twice a day though.
  18. Do you make your own food for fishes? I'm quite keen to try making gel foods for them!
  19. I believe its nutritious as I have fed the same food to my duncan and it grew. Its called Henry's reef gourmet, not sure if you have heard of it. Has zooplankton, crustaceans, spirulina, probiotics etc.
  20. I have successfully weaned the filefish on frozen gel foods, and now they prefer it to the actual SPS haha. Decided not to get the emperor angel as it is such an aggressive fish.
  21. I just got another 5 flashlightfish 2 days back and they are eating well! All 6 of them eat krill, brine and mysis. But judging from their activity, they seem to have a really high metabolic rate. Do they have to be fed several times a day? That is quite hard because I only see them eat at night!
  22. Can also but the space between the toadstools is really little to the point that they are pushing against each other, unless maybe I broke the rock in two and tried to glue separately I guess
  23. Hi I have 2 toadstools on a plug, they opened fully and are much bigger than before to my surprise. In fact they are now rubbing against each other. I was wondering if its possible to pull them off the plug and transplant them on some live rock, but how do I do so? Thanks!
