Better not unless your tank is without water. If there is a speck of sand the base may crack under the weight. At the minimum place a thin black foam.

I had the unfortunate incident like u mentioned. Mine's a 2ft tank. The sock got clogged up and overflow out the sump Also I felt my 3400l/h pump too strong for the 4inx4in sock compartment part of the cause. I changed to a slower rate pump since

I had plan to DIY my own LED light. Before, I could not find any useful information on LED DIY so I dare not try. Later on I found a video explaining very detail and precise information on how to DIY. To a noob like me, the video was very well made and well explained. He even teach you how to solder. This is the video There are 3 or 4 parts. After watching I think I can attempt to try. I am not logging my progress here. Just sharing the info. Like many useful info I got from this forum, hopefully someone will find it useful.

I painted mine with the normal rattle can spray paint and laquer it too. But only the part exposed. So far no problem. YMMV

I will get a skimmer when my tank stablelise. Will keep fish first and slowly some easy-to-care corals. Target WC twice a month. I planning to DIY my own LED light set. Will post a thread in DIY section. I am a noob at this though.
