Wonder whether should put livestock in sump (I have dsb / refugium)... Thinking of putting a few sand sifting LS but will this add to detritus on the dsb ??

Ok let's try to get this hairy crab and put into sump

What will happen if i don't have a sump for 3 ft tank?
woyeng** replied to Dreams's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
If u want corals, u will need chiller. Just my humble opinion -
Just found out my tank now has a 1+ inch hairy crab with big pincers... Tried over the last 2 nites to trap the bugger into a glass container with a prawn inside but the crab is either too smart or too ball-less, didnt take the bait... Can anyone share how to take these critters out ? Thanks !

How much salt to add to my tank?
woyeng** replied to Dreams's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
You need a hydrometer or refractometer to rest salinity but the label on the salt mix should provide a general mix qty with freshwater. -

I accidentally turned off my chiller for 2 weeks and here were the results (considering my Ammonia, NO2,NO3, PO4 readings are all low): 1. Tank temp ranged 29-30 deg celcius 2. Ich affected blue tang recovered ! 3. Sand goby RIP 4. A few ZOA frags "melted" 5. Other fish look ok with good appetite Read an article which mentioned that corals can survive 30-31 deg celcius temp, and fish are hardier. Now rebooting chiller to 27 deg celcius and monitoring situation.. I think ZOAs definitely prefer 26-27 deg celcius -
I have been "cycling" tank for 4 months. On the 2nd month, my Ammonia and NO2 zero but NO3 and PO4 high. But I started using biosphere (wonder if that was the correct move)... Took me 4-5 weeks for my NO3 /PO4 to drop to "respectable" levels (NO3 - <5ppm, PO4 < 0.1), but now my tank got severe diatom bloom for 2weeks now... After reading some articles, I was told after diatom bloom I should get green algae bloom but no specific timeline given... Looks like this may be a waiting game since no tank is the same according to many. Now I have some Fish and corals in the tank. No signs of stress.

Actually I just checked and the skim mate picking up again... Was reading about such effects when using upsized skimmers I m using a skimmer for 1000ltrs for my 300ltr tank
-
My skimmer was producing nice frothy and brownish skimmate for the last few days and suddenly the water level in the skimmer dropped and the froth cannot even rise... Does this mean that my tank lagi clean now ?!

Too much calcium ? Need to reduce ?

My wavemaker is 6000l/hr set at 30% capacity
-
I had a calcium test on my tank and found that calcium contents is off the charts... Can anybody advise if I need to reduce and if so, how to reduce calcium in tank ? My alkalinity is 8dKH
-
Can anyone advise how they would define low, moderate and high flow areas ? Considering a small 80gal (3.5ft) tank with wave makers x 2, flow is pretty much covered all over the tank

Epoxy certainly gives a very strong bonding. After applying yesterday, I couldn't move them anymore today
-
Ya.. Epoxy skills not there... Hope some of the corals grow out of the epoxy cover in case i eye !!

Just bought my first few soft corals and applied epoxy to give them a firmer grip on the LR with epoxy. After applying epoxy, my tank suddenly turned cloudy... Any issues ?

How much you spend on this hobby?
woyeng** replied to Happy13's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Perhaps another way of looking at this is at what stage do you spend how much At beginner stage with all the mis-steps, LS losses, equipment changes, etc. At intermediate stage where u hunger and thirst for the better and more beautiful... At advanced stage where u want to upgrade and hunger and thirst for the best and most beautiful... : : : .. then maybe there may come a time when things are not too well.... -

Thanks for the inputs bros. My strategy is to have LR + DSB with de-nitrifying bacteria + Chaeto in the refugium. For the DSB, I have feeling it make take quite some time for this to happen so for now, I am putting in a stronger light source to the refugium for the Chaeto and take it 1 step at a time although I am a little tempted to try using the ROWA in FR... after reading about the Algae Scrubber, I was also tempted to try that (there appears to be quite a few options), but that said, I agree with bro Sea Cucumber that it may take 1 year for the tank to mature, in fact that is what my friend who introduced me to the hobby said before, so it's all about being patient. Meanwhile, I also put Phosguard into my sump in the hope that the Phosphate will be reduced somewhat over the next 1-2 weeks although I read that Nitrates reduction require phosphates so that lack of phosphates may make nitrate reduction harder... -
When will the tank be fully cycled ?
woyeng** replied to woyeng**'s topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Thanks for the tip bro. I m slightly confused regarding this stage because was reading some literature that after nitrite turn zero, the next stage is for LR and DSB (which I use) to develop anaerobic bacteria to assist in de-nitifying process, hence the full cycling will be done only when even the nitrate levels drop to below 5ppm. Is this true ?
