Lighting For SpS
Marineman replied to John Deroe Kenedy's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Yes, I am using a light meter to measure the lumens. I do not have many LED to test with though. Many LED are available in the market esp those made in China for general lighting, not sure if they are the same specs as those used for marine. Need to measure the intensity for those used for general lighting and those used for marine as the latter pricing are more pricey. -
Lighting For SpS
Marineman replied to John Deroe Kenedy's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Dun worry about it bro. Honkit is big and strong man with strong views and he meant no harm Whatever lighting used can be successful in keeping SPS, lighting alone is not the answer as it depends on many other factors and diff people have diff preferences, maintenance methods, use of additives etc etc. It's a combination of factors, LED works well for you but not for all. You have showed us LED works for you and some reefers my try it out and succeed while some may fail as I said it depends on many factors and not lighting alone. In my case, I use MH becos of the glittering effect, I measured the lumens of LED and MH, the answer is obvious, I used MH becos my water quality is not perfect and the light penetration is reduced becos of this. If your water quality is perfect, LED may work for you. So each case is different and reefers should make their own evaluation and assessment before trying out new ideas, it may or may not work for you. It's good that you share your experiences with us here. I am sure there are other reefers have successes with LED used for SPS tank as the technology in LED has improved over the years and they are easily available in the LFS. Perhaps we should conduct a poll on the use of LED and get some feedback from those using it. -
Dun waste your time and money, I am not impressed with it. When I read about it and saw some photos from the internet I thought this is a must visit aquarium and I was very disappointed with what saw when I was there last year. No better than those in KL, Sentosa, Sydney or BKK aquaria., a pale comparison to those in the USA, like Monetery Bay or SF Aquarium.

Lighting For SpS
Marineman replied to John Deroe Kenedy's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Yalor, your atinic T5s in your culture tanks is a fine example of success using just atinic lights. I suggest you can use LED to cut your electriicity bill to achieve the same effects. Not sure if that is feasible as LED lights are quite expensive? May use many LED torch lights or study lamp lights which you can purchase from the pasar malams! -
Lighting For SpS
Marineman replied to John Deroe Kenedy's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
LED, T5 or MH will be suitable for any SPS as long as you keep only a few fishes and your water quality is excellent. Whatever lighting you use will not be able to sustain an SPS tank if your water quality is not there. The answer is obvious............ -
Bloody awesome! You always tempt me to spent my savings! lol

reef safe med for with spots
Marineman replied to ashaegyee's topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
There are instructions on the dosage. Skimmer off during the duration of dosing which can take weeks. Anyone knows how much they are selling and where to get them? -
That is true. Everytime I do a water change and/or replace the cotton filters, you need to tweak your skimmer a little after it stabilises

Chances are they are dead if you dun see them for a while. Depending on what fishes you are keeping, some fishes likes to hide by nature but not the fishes (tangs) u mentioned. If they hide, the signs are that they are stressed becos they are bullied by other fishes. When they hide, the signs are not good and they will generally starve to death. Fish dies for many reasons, some fishes have high mortality rate i.e they do not survive well in capitivity (like cleaner wrasse, most butterfly fishes etc), if hardy fishes to die, a few reasons are that they are stressed becos they have not been properly acclimatise, if they are caught using cynide, they will die over a few weeks. So do some research on fishes before buying to see if they are the hardy type (easier to keep), some fishes find it hard to survive in new aquariums, preferring matured ones (>9thhs) with some algae for them to peck on. Most fishes can tolerate imperfect water parameters unless it is way off. Do you now that some fishes release ttoxis when they die? If u dun, pls check out.

Hi Guys, Sometime last year I did mentioned that I plan to set up a new tank and asked for comments, attached is the link to my new tank. The corals are quite commos corals as we Malaysian always get second class corals becos our currency is weaker! Me no IT expert so got to link to one posting instead of post again, a lot of work la! http://chuisui.com/viewthread.php?tid=7841&page=1

Is a Calcium Reactor + CO2 tank needed to keep SPS?
Marineman replied to fab79's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Does this means that if I am using a CR I do not need to bother with dosing the tank with alkalinity buffer? -
Bro, very nice tank, I suggest you improve on your phtography skills or camera to give more justice to your tank!

Both seller and buyer are also right, seller may honestly not know or aware that the shaft is cracked IF it is cracked in the first place and the crack may have taken place in the buyer's hand and he is NOT aware of it. In a scenario like this BOTH parties honestly believed that they are right and they are in their own minds, this leads to misuderstanding. I have witnessed this type of incidents on many occasions, trust me feelings can go out of control if not handled properly. I can only suggest that both give each other the benefit of doubt and forget about the episode. If I am asked to arbitrate, I can only put it to the buyer's fault, ie he should have check before buying, if he does not then he only got himself to blame and have to accept the eventual outcome and should not be hostile or ask for a refund. I find myself in situations like the buyer many times and be a gentleman and bit the bullet and accept the loss. However the seller can also give him full refund if he feels generous although he has no obligation to do so.

Green Algae Problem (HELP!)
Marineman replied to alexandre's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Thanks, will try that too. -
Of course you can have LR and sand by all means, since the tank is temporary why bother with all these? If you dose copper your LR and sand cannot be used for a reef tank. LR and sand cost money too and it's best to keep it clean, you may want to put in some PVC pipes for the fish to hide instead of a bare tank. For a start you may wish to mix some water from your main tank to your quarantine tank as advised by others. Newly mixed water already have the trace elements and is clean and therefore considered as good quality water and that is why people do water change to replace their tank's dirty water with new clean water. You can change 10% of the water every week and since it is a small tank it should be easy.

Green Algae Problem (HELP!)
Marineman replied to alexandre's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
In my old tank I don't experience this problem as my tangs love the grape caulerpa. What does the cheato do? Perform the same function for phosphate export? I don't think caulerpa is efficient for nitrate export. -
I like your mushroom heaven! I am trying to create one each for my mushroom and zoas. You got good equipment too. My only concern for you is the fishes you keep, clown trigger is a beautiful fish and an agressive one too once it is settled in. Damsels are generally territorial, domino damsel is one of them and the other lightning blue and black damsel will change colour when it becomes an adult, less attractive if I remembered correctly. Once they are in your tank, it is very difficult to take them out. You keeping abalone? Hmm....not sure if they can survive in captivity as they are cold water animals. Anyone who have experience in keeping them?

Green Algae Problem (HELP!)
Marineman replied to alexandre's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
To be honest, I hate to do water testing as some of they are so tedious! From my experience, as along as you do regular WC, your water parameters should be fine. As for nitrate, my old tank used to have nitrates exceding 150ppm! Can't read any higher than 100ppm when I used Tetra test kit with a max 100pm reading, did not adjust for hiher reading, as my tank was stable. For my recent set up, I only test for CA, just to make sure that my CR is working! I have not tested for nitrates as I don't have many fishes in my tank, only 6 atm. I plan to use caulerpa for phosphate (not nitrate) export in my sump, normally they will survive better only when your tank is more matured as from what I remembered my caulerpa did not survived in my previous tank when it was just set up. I think you are more diligent than me and doing the right thing and heading in the right direction, I suggest there is so much you can do atm. Leave your tank alone for a while as the more you fiddle with it, your fishes will be stressed. I am sure it will be fine after a few more months. I tried to be perfect as much as I can but sometimes I have to live with some "variances" as to go the extra mile requires a lot of effort which I don't have!
