  5. Hi bro, Yes, you can use distilled water with salt mix for water change Yes, you can place phosphate media in sump with cheato. However, do note that phosphate media works best in high flow area, especially inside a fluidized reactor.
  6. I am not electrician but this is what I have learned from my past experiences. I used to have sporadic trip and after getting a electrician to check, he found that I have overloaded my circuit. Thus whenever, all my equipments are running and my fridge compressor were to start running it will cause a overload. Apparently, my tank socket shared the same circuit as my kitchen and when all equipments were to run at the same time, it cause an trip due to overload. So in the end, he re-wired my circuit so that my tank will share the load with my room which don't draw that much current compared to my kitchen. HDB when wiring the house will share several socket to a 13amp circuit thus our socket is never really 13amp. This is because the typical family do not consume so much electricity. I am not sure whether this could be your problem but I suggest getting an qualified electrician to look into it if you have any doubts.
  7. Carbon and DI resin will removes almost everything from the water thus you will get a TDS (Total Dissolve Solids) reading of 0 when your unit in new. However, as you use for longer period the TDS will slowly climb and most people will change to new carbon and DI resin upon reaching an reading of 10+ TDS. That's why its imperative to get a TDS if you current unit does not comes with. A handheld TDS is easily available in more LFS for around $60. HTH
  8. Last bits have to mop it out. Siphoning sand using hose will mean that you will need some form of sand trap to separate sand from water. Water goes into drainage and sand into dustbins. If sand goes into drainage, it will be a disaster waiting to happen.
  9. Bro, never share your latest additions??
  10. When you free, come over my place to exercise your arms...

  13. Hi bro, My yellow tang still as yellow, peppermint hog retains its reds which in most well lighted systems may change to maroon. But I must say, it is not total darkness since we still on the room lights. Total darkness will not be advisable as wrasses will remain in the sandbed and starve. Slcw, Malaysian reefer who won Ultimate Reef tank of the month also reported no significant effects of the fishes.
  14. Technically Yes. Bacteria colonies increase and decrease base on the availability of food source and substrate which they can harbour.
  15. Back breakingly 1 scoop after another, no 2 ways about it.
  16. Vertebrates (Fishes) are active contributors of bio-loads because are have a high metabolic rate and thus excrete a lot more compared to invertebrates (Crustaceans & Corals).
  17. I used to have one in my tank and it grow to about 2 inches, from cute to scary. lol
  18. Yup, I don't dose for my current FOWLR. If I see algae growing in my FOWLR, I just off all lights for the next couple of weeks and my tank will look good as new and still save money of electricity.
  19. Hi Bro, Most marine tank set-up with have aerobic bacteria that will convert ammonia to nitrite and then from nitrite to nitrate. For set-ups that includes invertebrates which are sensitive to nitrate, reefers will need some ways to convert Nitrate to Nitrogen. One of the way is to add vodka a carbon (food) source for certain strains of bacteria that will transform Nitrate to Nitrogen. If your tank is FOWLR, technically you need not dose vodka. However, some FOWLR owners still dose vodka to reduce alga growth as nitrate is food source for algae as well. But do note that vodka dosing need precision and overdose will cause more problems even to the extend of crashing your tank and killing all livestocks. HTH
