I know of some brothers getting a cheap DIY DI set from Sealife, you may want to try it out. If I am not wrong it should be less than $80.

Not really. Venturi is a method of introducing air into the pump to be mix with water to create bubbles. It is one of the most basic skimming method. However, by mixing air & water just by a normal impellor does not produce the intense bubbles that some reefers require. As such, some began to improve of the it by introducing Needlewheel impellor, Beckett nozzle or Mazzei nozzle. Beckett and Mazzei theoritically is the same, it entails very large volume of high pressured water to be force into a nozzle resulting tons of tiny bubbles thereby improving the slimming. Most believe beckett as the leader in turn of the generation of bubbles. However, this method require the brute force of a pressure rated pump such as the Iwaki MD which bulkier. Also the beckett requires a large reaction chamber and requires more time tuning and maintain it. The Needlewheel is a methods where by water and air are introduce before the impellor and when air and water reaches the needlewheel impellor, it chops the water and air and thus create tons of bubble. The good thing about needlewheel is the consumption of electricity, most requiring less than 38w. Also the needlewheel skimmer usually smaller as compared to the becketts and are usually much easier to tune. The only draw back is once the neddlewheel impellor is broken, the replacement is costly. We can discuss the Pros and Cons of Becketts vs Needlewheel till Kingdom come and still not get the satifiactory answer. For me, my preference is for the needlewheel as I wanted a skimmer that is fuss free when comes to maintainance. I can easily remove the cup and plus the skimmer can be tuck below my cabinet without comprising of skimate production. Just my 2 cents.

Oops, maybe you would like to contact Henry from ML for the DI unit.

Pressure rated pumps are very powerful pumps that manufactured, tested and rated to be used in a high head-loss envirnoment that is due to too many elbows, turns, too high an elevation of the outputs or any situation that create high back pressure. These pumps usually are bigger and have higher flows of minimum 2500l/hr and above thus not really suitable for your 2ft set-up. Unless you intend to have one pumps to be tee-off (Share) to return, FR, chiller, closed loop etc. But for this will will need lots of pipping works. Return is one of the most important pump in your whole set up thus, I will strongly urge you to get Aquabee, Eheim, Oceanrunner or even SICCE. You can always get 2nd hand from our Pasar Malam forum. It is definitely well worth the $$$. Usually a 2 x 1 x 1 after sand and LR will contain ~10gal or 38l of water. The minimum return I suggest is the Eheim compact 1000 which is ~$50 brand new.

I dun mind lending you my car. But I guess you would rather take bus than to been seen in it.

Wish you luck in taming the Algae Monster soon!

I presume you are new to the hobby, thus the three most important test kit to get you by will be "ANN" aka Ammonia, Nitrate & Nitrite. As you dwell further into the hobby, you will slowly add some corals and thus you will need "CAP" aka Calcium, Alkaline & Phosphates. These are just the basics. As to what Brand test kits to get, the general preference are Tropic Marine and Salifert.

Good, false cabinate is a good way to hide all the unsightly stuffs. Hehehe, my son suppose to due 12/06 but till now no news yet. Gynae says have to give another few more days. If 18/06 still no news then induce. Roidan is right, get a wooden stand rather than iron ones. If you want a sturdy one bro Chinmo is selling his super solid one. PM him if you need.

Your concern is valid Kelmen. In fact, in order to do that he has to ensure that the species of fishes he kept are from the region and not alien species that when escape will be detrimental to the environment. I know for a fact that even before he does it, he has to engage independant consultants to propose and endorse his lagoon. Not just anyhow build overnight. -
Just a suggestion, maybe you will link to use Oyama papers to cover the sump area so that it is neater.

Nice work Henry! Have been anticipating to view your post for very long liao. Keep it coming bro!

I have a friend who tried that in secluded part California. What he did was a sealed lagoon near the sea. Water from the sea are being collected 20meters out, sand filtered, Ozoned before chanelling into his "tank". Water from his tank are being overflowed into a sump where it will be pump out into the sea 50 meters away and where the current will carries the effluent away from his collection point. With this method he dun need a massive man-made skimmer as the ocean is his skimmer already. However, he mentioned that he still needs to treat the water coming in to prevent unneccessary made-made polution and also planktonic algae or diseases from spreading. -
Technically you can use any pump or flowrate as long as your DIY overflow can take it. Generally the minimum required flow is 5 x your total vol. But some of us push it as much as 10 - 15x our volume. Points to consider while choosing a return pump: 1) Make - Asia made pump unfortunately have been known to be overated in term of performance. For non-pressure rated pumps go for the Germans. 2) Pressure rated - For a 2 ft tank, you need not get a pressure rated pump but do get one that with higher head. (Head = distance and numbers of joint = resistance to the flow) 3) Heat - I believe you will most likely to using a submersible pump. As such do consider the heat transfered to the tank. Being a 2 footer, heat is one thing that you need to maintain constant. 4) Efficiency - Always check on the wattage the pump consumes vs the flow it is able to render. eg. Pump A uses 30watt to push 1000l/h while Pump B uses 80watt for 1000l/h. Obviously the Pump A is mpre efficient. My 2 cents
