twice failed!where is the mistake?
Gouldian replied to Jaslyn's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Good to hear that the tangs are now spotless. For me, I will continue to feed garlic as you know, ICK have 3 stages life cycle. 1) Swimming on water column hunting for prey 2) Drop off from fishes bodies onto substrates, dormant 3) Attached on fishes bodies Only on stage 3 then are they visible to us. Thus we have to keep our vigilance. -
Saw a double-decker with a Underwater World ad about Sea Angels. When on the web and found this. Very interesting, anyone saw it at Underwater World? Is it worth the entrance fee??

Nicely put kotobuki. Anyway $300 for a Italian made chiller is a steal! If I am planning another 2 or even 3 footer, I will definitely grab liao. Too bad I am planning something bigger in the near future. Upzzzzzzzz

Is PL light suitable for marine?
Gouldian replied to Xposeidon's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I am not sure about the claims by other brands but I trust only the former ATI and DD when comes to T5 HO. -
T4, T5 or T8 represent the diameter of the tube the smaller the number the smaller the tube. We cannot tell the brightness just checking whether it is T5 or T4. The lights that most of us use are T5 HO. HO = High Output, thus you will notice a 2ft T5 HO will be rated 24W while a normal T5 may only consume 18W. Further to wattage, we also need to know what spectrum the lights are running in. Below are the spectrum most reefers use: 1) Blue Spectrum Peaks at 450 nm. Supplementation Lamp encourages blueing in SPS coral, minor fluorescing. 2) True Actinic Peaks at 420nm. Brings out the flouresce in corals 3) Full spectrum 6000k. For growth. Hope that helps.

Btw, pickling lime and Kalkwasser are a form of limewater. In fact I have read somewhere SeaChem Kalkwasser have been tested by FDA fit for human food preparation (pickling). As Kalk (lime) will percipitate PO4, I am not surprise that you have minimal algae growth. That's why I am a proponent for Kalkwasser. However, I would cautioned you regarding the dosage of 3 table spoon! Most reefers who dose Kalk will mix 1tsp to 1.5l to 2l of fresh dechorinated water. Over dosage of Kalk will leads to Ionic Imbalance that is troublesome to correct not to talk about watching your livestocks dying or turning white/brown.

Hi Happy Reefer, Glad to know you have a kind soul willing to help you with your lighting problem. From my limited knowledge, most of the T4 in the market are manufactured for commercial lighting rather than Aquarium. Thus, you will find that they are usually available in 3000k (warm light) to 6400k (Daylight) which is alright for most commercial applications of illumination. Some of the tubes are dyed Green, Red and Blue for aesthetic reasons. However, these lights are not enough for Corals that depends highly on photosynthesis for growth and food. Thus if you intend to use the T4s for the illumination of your tank so that you may see the fishes and maybe support some hardy corals such as bubbles that dun need too much lights. I would think it will suffice. But if you are thinking to use the T4 to sustain light demanding corals such as SPS, some LPS or even clams; I wouldn't bet my last buck on it. Hope that helps.
