  1. Tie some frozen mysis on a string and dangle them in front of the fish. This will work best if you can get PE Mysis which are larger compared to the regular Hikkari Mysis.
  2. No tips to keep them alive for long. You can try feeing them spirulina, they are very nutritious.
  3. So bro, did you try the dangling method? In order to ensure that the ghost shrimp carries sufficient nutrients, you may want to gut load them with quality food first.
  4. Bro, is this pic taken by yourself? Much better than those your showed me earlier.
  5. If you do not want to have CO2, you can try a DIY kalk reactor. See links for more information. http://jjgeisler.com/reeftank/diy_kalkwasser_reactor.htm http://www.mv.com/users/besposito/nilsen.html http://www.reefworkshop.com/DIY_kalkreactor.htm
  6. Definitely bro, a frogfish will eat anything that moves and its mouth can swallow. Frogfishes are not recommended for community set-up.
  7. In a recent Hawaiian shipment at Reborn, there was a A. tuberosus, seldom imported into Singapore. Heard that they may consider to bring in a few more. http://www.frogfish.ch/species-arten/Antennatus-tuberosus.html
  8. You will need to train them to recognize market prawn as food. Frogfishes will use its illicium/esca to lure small fishes and crustaceans before consuming them. Thus its natural feeding behaviour is to taunt and lure before feeding thus you will need to start by with live feeders and slowly convert them to dead food by dangling them in front of them. I feel that dangling frozen mysis and releasing them in front of the frogfish works better than cut pieces of market prawn.
  9. So you getting the frogfish? If yes, please share your pictures.
  10. There are 2 school of thoughts here: Feels that feeding freshwater fishes are ok since most parasites from fresh water will not be able to survive in salt water Feels that fresh water feeder fishes are usually badly raise and thus may be diseased and also lack of the essential nutrients needed by marine fishes I feels that if you supplement your frog fish diet with vitamin enriched mysis or to gut load your guppy with vitamin enriched food, cyclop before feeding them to the frogfish may be the way to go. HTH
  11. Thanks Larry for arranging for this gathering. 1) Harlequin Mania ( Larry ) 2) Jackywongto (bringing satays!) 3) LemonLemon 4) Ketchup 5) Desi --> contributing Tiramisu 6) iskay 7) jyoon (tentative - if come will bring Sake) 8) Ray 9) Qiang 10) Gouldian (Tentative will come and will bring some alcohol as well, but not safe to dose into tank ok)
  12. To be super correct, it should be dechlorinated fresh water. Stir 1/2 teaspoon of kalkwasser into dechlorinated fresh water in a container with cover Cover the container to minimize contact with air and wait for kalk to settle Drip or pour slowly the clear solution into tank and discard the remnants HTH
  13. If your brain have acclimated in your tank, it should be easy to 'encourage' feeding response. Herewith are steps I take with good results: Feed 5-10mins before lights off Turn off return pump and any wave maker Mix any brands of invertebrates food* with 50ml of fresh de-chlorinated water Pour mixture slowly into tank ON PUMP AFTER REGIME Invertebrates food: I find that micro-size food yield better results. e.g. cyclopeeze, polyplabs, spirulina, baby brine shrimps, rotifers, commercially prepared phytoplankton, commercially prepared zoeplankton etc. HTH
  14. Hi guys, Was lucky to visit LOTS Gourmet Stop at Changi for lunch last Wednesday. Name: Lots Gourmet Stop Address: 965A Changi Road North, Changi Garden, Singapore 507655 Background: LOTS used to be ran by a Canadian guy who have since went back to his home country after chalking up some debts. Jenny Pang, a hardworking chef with extensive experience in Australia took over the entire shop including the company. She have been running the restaurant since Nov 2009. Spoke with Jenny, she is really very friendly, typical Aussie friendliness. She cooks and manages the place all by herself with the help of 2-3 workers. I have visited LOTS before and after Jenny took over and I must say that she is really a "super woman". Please give her your supports. Food: Western, Bistro style with a hint of Aussie influence Set lunch: $14.90 with selection of main course Favourite 1: I tried and like the vongole, good portion, cooked with flavourful white wine, served with cabiatta bread Favourite 2: Lemon Lime Bitter - Good amount of Angustra Bitters rather than the usual "few drops" at some places - yummy Fabourite 3: MacDonalds extended breakfast till noon but for LOTS, breakfast is being serve up to 3pm Location: Changi Garden is right after Esso station along Changi Road North thus those driving there, be sure to keep very left and turn immediately after Esso, free parking http://www.hungrygowhere.com/singapore/lots_gourmet_stop/ http://yum.sg/index.php?component=view_restaurant&restaurant_id=3583
  15. Beautiful! you keeping it in a separate tank? What's your set-up like?
  16. Off topic, what frogfish you keeping? Any pic? TIA
  17. Hi Bro, Cotton will disintegrate in matters of days in salt water thus need not worry to much. But if its nylon or polyester than you need to worry.
  18. Hi Pandagold, Liverocks are the same ones in you use in your main tank. However, since right now you are lacking in anaerobic bacteria housing, one of the solution is to have large piece of liverocks. The reason why you need large pieces (approx 5-6inches) is that smaller pieces will not have anaerobic zones. If I were you, I will remove coral chips vs bioballs if I suspect that its is the detritus accumulations that causes of my high NO3. This is because bioballs have smooth inert surfaces that do not trap as much detritus as compared to coral chips. Also, corals chip does not really act as buffer in marines set-up, this is due to 2 basic reasons: 1) Organic films (Bacteria colonization) and detritus build-up on the surface of the coral chips preventing direct contact between coral chip surface and the water. 2) Coral chip will start buffering at pH 7 or lower (Marine Tank optimum pH - 8.1 - 8.4). Thus, by the time your pH reaches the coral chip melting point, your tank could already have crashed. Reefers who uses Calcium Reactors will know, calcium media will not melt if you do not introduce CO2 into the CR chamber to lower the pH to 7 or lower. Coming back to bioballs and corals chips, sintered glass or even liverocks in sump to increase the anaerobic zones. All of the above will work well if you have a good pre-filter (mechanical filtration), this is why you find reefers placing polyester wool to trap particulates prior to the bio-filtration chamber of your sump. If you do not have or maintain a effective mechanical pre-filter, you will still not get effective bio-filtration regardless of which media (bioballs, corals chips, liverocks etc) you changed to. Now that you mention the fishes you are keeping, can you give us more info? The number and sizes of the fishes and your feeding regime will help provide more clues to your high NO3. Also, do you have a skimmer and whether you are getting sufficient skimmate may be another reason. Like some of the bros here have advised, try to be prudent and do not jump into any conclusion without exhaustive investigating your actual reason for the high NO3. Do drastic changes will do more harm than good. HTH
  19. Bioballs are mediums for nitrifying bacterias to host thus you are experiencing good NO2 reading. However, the by-products of nitrifications is NO3 that's why you are getting high NO3. It got nothing to do with your bioballs but rather the lacking in de-nitrication, that is you need to address your NO3 by having de-nitrification. De-nitrification happens in anaerobic condition. There are existing some anaerobic activities going on in your tank however, it may not be sufficient as seen in your current readings. You can reduce your NO3 with the following: Deep Sand Bed Carbon Base De-Nitrator Sulphur Base De-Nitrator NP Pellets Algae Filtration (Absorption) Chemical Precipitation (AZNO3 etc) Live Rocks (Large Pieces with anaerobic zones) Removing Bioballs will reduce NO3 but will also reduce the nitrification abilities of your tank thus you may experience a slow climb of NO2 after the removal. Our tank need nitrification and de-nitrification process in order to complete nitrogen cycle (Ammonia > Nitrite > Nitrate > Nitrogen). Hope that helps.
  20. Those from the northern part of Malaysia will know about this famous dish from Teluk Intan formerly Teluk Anson, Ipoh. Anson Chee Cheong Fun The unique thing about Anson Chee Cheong Fun is that it does not comes with the usual sweet sauce and are filled with turnips, spring onions and dried shrimp. I have never tried the real mccoy in Ipoh but have always heard my Malaysian friends talk about them. Anyway last we there twice (Thurs & Sat), 1st with friends, then with family. We had an enjoyable meal, both my sons like it so much that they keep saying "Thank you daddy for bringing us try the white noodles, very nice leh". I am not sure whether they are directly related with the original Teluk Intan shop but the looks seems similar and the taste was to our likings even my Malaysian friends. Beside, Anson CCF, they also have mushroom CCF, curry chicken noodle, Yong Tau Foo, Nasi Lemak, yam cake, pumpkin cake and some home made chinese biscuits. I have tried the Curry Chicken noodle, Anson CCF, Mushroom CCF and Yong Tau Foo and here's my verdict: * Anson CCF - It's different from the CCF we are used to which are either without filling or the shanghai version with fillings. The use of turnip and fried spring onions give the CCF an unique taste and crunchiness. As the CCF is served without sweet sauce the fillings also provide the filling enhancing the dish with its unqiue savoury flavours. The dish worth trying twice in a week! * Curry Chicken Noodle - Nothing to shout about, something to fill your stomach while your sample the Anson CCF. * Mushroom CCF - Was a little bland to our likings. * Yong Tau Foo - Served the Hakka style i.e. you cannot pick and choose your items and serve semi dry in a common platter. Not to our liking. Location: 324P Changi Road Singapore 419799 near Telok Kurau and Changi Road Junction. Promo: $0.50 for a bowl of soya bean curd 6pm to 1am Happy dining.
  21. Last Saturday, a bro went but too bad they were closed for a private event. Heard they hosted a special dinner to send off the Singapore Team for the Gourmet Summit.
