  1. Vodka is used because it is almost pure ethanol without additives, coloring, tanins, flavoring etc. Brandy which is fortified wine that spend long period in oak cask for coloring and complexity is not suitable to be used in reef tank as it is not known what side effects it will produce. Hope that helps.
  2. Wow Big Mambosa Skimmer, this skimmer have been around for quite sometime. For those interested, herewith is a review of it back in 1999 - http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fishnchips/nov99/fnc1199.html Ups
  3. Bro, You are right! One of the problem with conventional chiller is the feed pump to carry water to the chiller and back, and most of us know that the 1hp chiller that is place far away from the tank will require some decent pumps to move the water. Whereas the air-con unit, they are manufacture to carry refrigerants from the external unit to the coil and you do not require any additional pumps or power to do that. I believe Milch have a compressor unit for sale.
  4. Good job bro, when can I visit you?
  5. Hi Ah Siang, Yes, too much carbon source can wreck havoc to our tank, in the early days some even randomly dose packets of sugar into their tank as carbon source to their dismay several months down the road. Carbon source dosing needs to be untaken with care as we are not able to see imbalance until its too late.
  6. Hi bro, your tank maker may be right, in order to reduce vibration sound, it is always best not to connect pumps directly to hard pipings but rather to have a small section of soft tube in between to absorb any vibrations. You can further reduce vibration if you do not place the pump directly onto the tank floor but use the rubber sucker provided. Hope that helps.
  7. Good decent skimmate, thanks for sharing!
  8. If you are struggling to keep fishes alive you will have even more problem with coral. Corals have a even lower tolerance compared to fishes. This means that, a slight sway of water parameters may crash your tank. Herewith are some equipment upgrade inevitable when you intend to add corals to a fish only set-up: 1) Lights - Most corals we keep are photosynthetic corals needing high powered lightings in order to keep them alive 2) Chiller - You will need to keep tank temperature 28 degree or below and this cannot be achieve with just fans as the average room temperature is more that 29 degree without taking into considerations the heat generated by your pumps and lightings 3) Wave-maker - A decent wave-maker or 2 to create the random flow that coral requires in order for their polyps to extend and to remove bacteria slime and coat 4) Skimmer - Better skimmer to remove nutrients and reduce the spike of phosphate and nitrate which is acceptable in fish only systems 5) Additives - Maintain constant parameters Ca, KH, pH, Mg, Phospate etc through additives medias and even equipment I am not trying to discourage you from keeping corals but hope you will take a well-informed prudent approach. Hope that helps....
  9. IMHO, you can never overskim you tank. When your system is low nutrients your skimmer simply skim less. Most hobbyists will buy the biggest skimmer they can afford and some chose smaller skimmer due to space in their cabinet or sump.
  10. Looking at the pict posted, there are already baffles in place, I believe the micobubbles are from new piping, these are common during new set-up, they are remnant air pockets that got trapped in the pipeworks and some may be from the joints and elbow that are not fully seal (due to white tape and silicone not fully cured). The problem will auto-remedy after a while.
  11. Garlic has been used for many years as immunity boosters, it has been added to various branded fish food from Omega Seas to Sea Chem. In fact, when I used to make my own frozen food, I used to add freshly grated garlic. But like what Terryz mentioned, these products do not kill ick and frankly I have also never witness any reef-safe products that effectively kill ick. So they only play a supporting role to help the fish overcome the infestation. IMHO, I feel that ick can only be prevented by creating a stress-less environment and consistent good water parameters. And if ick were to strike, the best way is to remove the fish into a hospital tank for proven medications (non reef-safe) such as copper, formalin etc. The other alternative is to hypo-saline your tank.
  12. If you are referring to the stiff tubing such as below, you can get them from several of our sponsor such as Reef Depot, Iwarna and Aqua Marin. HTH
  13. Use Wessbond and Selleys before without any adverse effects.
  14. Hi Des, welcome back.... missed your humour, how's kids?
  15. Wow great have been looking around for these holders recently, feel that par LED gives more placement option compared to the strip type. Vincent, lets talk next week when we meet.
