Angel's prayer:"God almighty I pray that my boss, Gouldian will strike 4D and Toto so that he may have $$$ to upgrade us to a 5ft tank with Starfire glass, IKS monitor and pump system, Deltec Skimmer and Ca Reactor, ATI lightings, Spectrum pellet, Tropic Marine Reef Pro salts and additives, RowaPhos, Golden pearls........Thank you".

Very insightful Madmac! Sometimes we are so engrossed in our personal races that we totally forgotten that these are actually lives as well. Lives that the big G up there have empowered us to have take care of.

Good one Reefbum. But do you think that those companies that spend tons of $$$ on research should ROI with their equipment by charging a premium? When you say cheaper options do you mean those that copied from the expensive companies? No offense bro but I really wants to know your feel.

Hi 35cents, I fully agree with your wanting to experiment and I strongly feel that if not for the Europeans reefers wanting to try out new methods to reef keeping, all of us may still be stuck in the trickle filters era. Anyway, hope to hear more views on this.

Dun look stresssed to me too, maybe just trying to get used to the new environment, temperature, flow and water params. Should be ok in a day or two.

With the recent happenings of reefers going to cheaper alternatives and some organizations pushing for a frowned upon filtration systems, I decides to look up on articles on the history and evolution of reef keeping. My search was promptly answered by Google which pointed me to this article written by Mike Paletta - (Aquarium Fish, Fall 1998, Volume 15). In this article, Mr. Palette mentioned that although the concept of Modern Reef Keeping is widely practice in the 80s but the foundations were in fact laid in the 60s and 70s. However, these concepts were quickly dismissed especially in the US resulting the hobby stunted advancement in North America as compared to the Europe. As time passes and technology and understanding of the needs of the reef increases, we have since moved from an era with damsels and dead rocks to an era with lush colours and different livestocks that can only be in the dreams of some of our pioneers just 15-20 years back. We have also evolved from a simple under gravel system to a system that calls for dedicated equipments to simulate as much as possible, Mother Nature. However, what some of us are observing recently is that there are some amoung us that are looking for more convenient ways out of these proven methods, dismissing advises or even proven studies done before us. And although they might have successes at the very beginning just like the pioneers before. But just like the pioneers before us, they will bound to meet some obstacles that will be detrimental to their tank! Some of them argued that they have keep certain corals in their system for 6 months without any problems using their methods. But have we really considered that livestocks especially corals have a much longer lives span than most of us? And keeping them alive for more than 6 months is just not enough to judge that they are doing fine. I am not saying that there is only 1 way to Paradise. I mean without experimentations, we would not have gotten so far today. But before we embark into our own trials and errors sessions, I feel that it is necessary for us to fully understand, study and research what have been done before so that we will not going around like a headless chicken trying to re-invent the wheels. Anyway, I think I have wrote too much, I openly invite all bros and sis to air their comments and thoughts here.

The reason why I said this is because even the experts varies greatly in terms of their opinions on Goniopora. Hers's the scoop: The Coral Whisperer updated 14 November 2002. Eric Borneman wrote <Goniopora Revisited: If We Could Keep It Alive, Do We Really Want To?>. In it he mentioned, "The fact that the aqueous extracts of stony corals causes polyp contraction, bleaching and tissue loss in other stony corals within 24 hours, and that merely putting Galaxea in a tank with Goniopora can cause it to die within hours should put us at a new state of awareness and alert. As with soft corals, it may be difficult to say with certainty that coral species x will have a particular effect on coral species y. As with other organisms, variability in both production and effects on other species seems to be the norm. However, and as I have stated frequently, it becomes a matter of risk assessment. Soft corals known to be prolific producers of toxins, or those known to have certain effects on certain species, should be maintained in aquariums with careful consideration of the potential consequences. It appears the same is true for stony corals. In particular, Goniopora is well recognized to produce toxins that are wide-ranging and consistent in their effects on vertebrates and invertebrates. Perhaps this is fortunate news, given the fact that they survive so poorly in aquariums (Borneman 1997, Toonen 2001). ". Sunsequently on Aquarium Invertebrates Updated 14 December 2002. Julian Sprung written a totally different view. Thus, I feel that we should look into our personal stocks requirement and adjust accordingly. If we sense that the clowns are harassing the Gonio or any corals - remove it, if you are having great results with the Gonio hosting the clowns - Great! Thus the key is to provide the best conditions to our LS and sharing it if neccessary. Not the other way around Remember, man can never fully understand Mother Nature. -

I think like what the Late Premier of China said, "Dun cat whether it is white cat or black cat, as long as it catches mouse, it is a good cat". What matters is the results we get, no point discussing til the cow comes home and yet our LS is still suffering. -

Sorry Nicholas, I honestly dun think your jewel is doing well. You may want to compare your gonio vs Lin's gonio and you will be able to tell the difference. Btw, gonio seldom dies rapidly thus it is not correct to say that we have a healthy specimens if it has been with us for a few months. In fact some experts in the RC have failed to keep gonio past 6mths, according to them their gonio was doing very well and suddenly died within the next few months. Thus gonio is one of the corals that they shun. -

So sis Lin, when you say, "can get bubble tip.. btw, my maroon sleep in my purple tip at nite.. ". Do you mean that you have an purple tip anemone hosting your clown or your gonio is purple tip?? If it is a purple bubble tip anemone, which means the amount of time spend by the maroon on the gonio may not substantiate a recession by the gonio. Anyway, from your pix, you have a healthy gonio, must find an opportunity to learn from you one day. Cheers,
