In Singapore, we often have reefers asking whether there are any reef-safe Angels and at times, we will also have reefers asking how to remove a trouble-making Angels from an establish reef tank. I don’t deny that Angels are beautiful show fish for the regular tank. But does that mean that reefers with mixed reef will have to forego thoughts of having an Angel in their tank? I don’t think so, besides risking time, money, corals and hairs by betting of the 50/50 reef-safe species such as the Centropyge that some reefers have discovered are not totally reef-safe. We can maybe look into the world of Genicanthus or commonly referred as Swallowtails. The most notable characteristics of the genre are their tails that resembles a swallowtail thus the name. All species are equipped with small mouths lined with three or four rows of small bristle-like teeth. The teeth gives hints of its feeding tactics that is picking prey out of the water column. Thus most literature concludes that Genicanthus are pelagic planktivores, consuming copepods, fish eggs and larvae, polychaete larvae and pelagic tunicates. They will also feeds on polychaete worms occasionally. All Genicanthus are diurnal and prefers steep drop-offs that are at least 75-90 feet deep In fact most species can only be found only around 200 feet with the G. semifascaitus residing in as deep as 650 feet! Being sexually dichromatic, males have a considerably different coloration or pattern than females. Although I tend to prefer the female coloration of the G. bellus as compared to the male. The fish will adopt the male coloration only after first living as a functional female for a period of time. When the opportunity arises, most often from the lack of a dominant male's presence, the dominant female of the local group will become male. As per all fishes from the deep, Genicanthus are susceptible to decompression sickness. Also the fact that most fishes available in our region comes from Philippines there are also cases of Cyanide poisoning. Thus it is prudent to purchase a already feeding specimen and never to purchase a fish that is unable to swim upright or remain stable in the water column. There are generally lesser LFS in Singapore offering Genicanthus due to the fact that they are deep fishes and thus needs more care when collecting. The most commonly available species are the G. lamarki. When comes to feeding, Genicanthus are very easy to feed once established in the home aquarium. Almost anything floating in the water column will get taste-tested, making the home aquarist's job that much easier. Genicanthus species are not likely to pester small fish such as gobies and blennies if those fish are not planktivores. Genicanthus preferably, should be kept in pairs. A lone individual will usually fare well, but watching a pair interact is well worth the investment. Reefers may obtain even more than a pair, but should be careful to add only one male, while all the remaining individuals must be females. Thus, if you are looking for a colorful, bold, non-aggressive and hardy fish for your tank full of precious corals, look no further.

Yah loh, thus he should start to learn from his more seniors friends instead dwelling / hiding in the past. I think MC and my personal experiences are important truning points that I can use to convince him that its time for him to grow up. And be responsible to what he can or cannot say in the future. -

I fully agree with you MC! What this friend dunno is that if he were to step into the society, he will get disasterous consequences. Which is something we wanted very much to prevent. As a friends, we only can avoid him. But as a colleague, most people will have no choice but to eliminate him as all of us have to be answerable for non-performance. Which brings me back to Lin perspective. Lin, I know you are a very nice person, but I feel that your perspective of always pointing back to yourself in every problem is unhealthy and dangerous at time too. As per all things in life, we have to have "Moderation". Now back to our main issue, at my course of work, I have seen lots of very young and promising executives being reduced to nothing all because they are too arrogant or brash and never heed advises from the seniors. Sometimes, I really hope that I can just ignore him as some of my friends do but someone just have to do the job of educating him in a way that he will learn and at the same time does not cost him alot. Thus, I posted here. So far, I have been given fantastic tips and perspectives on how to go about assist this friend of mine. Thank you all bros & sis, I know I can count on you guys! -

True also lah. I know you personally and I must say you are one that always gives in to others to the extend that you hurt yourself. At times, I wish you could just stand up for yourself. Anyway, I heard from friends that you are doing great now and am happy for you. Take care my dear sister in reefing. -

Criticise Like A Man But Apologize Like A Wimp
Gouldian replied to Gouldian's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Thanks bro, I will try again next time. But actually we have been using your methods for very long liao but he still refuses to grow up. How? Thanks for your kind contribution. -
Dear bros and sis, I have a friend that likes to criticise people, he likes to do it openly in front of everyone so that he appears knowledgeable. When he is wrong, we will try to correct him. But he will try to wriggle, twist and distort until he gets away with it. Most of my friends try to bear with his antics as we do not want to come across as rude and also because we felt that he is still young. As time passes, most of my friends began to loose patience with him and requested me to try to correct whenever my friends feel that he is going overboard. Most of these times, I will have to try very hard to convince him that he is wrong and that he should think before he criticise others but I usually met with his wriggling ways. Even when I finally convince him, he will never openly apologize to my friends but secretly or discreetly or sometime even prtend that my friends have forgiven him. My friends and I felt that this is not acceptable as he Criticise Like A Man But Apologize Like A Wimp. Anyone have any experience?

Hi Yiling, I still can remember the "Skimmer" thingy. Just incase some reefers here are confused. When yiling 1st joined our forum, he humbly asked for advice as to what skimmer is more suitable for a complete reef set-up. Lots of reefers here offered Yiling their best info. Finally Yiling was convinced by Shoelevy to get the Macro needlewheel. When Yiling cannot get the result he wanted and went back to Shoelvy for advice on how to tune, he disappeared, leaving Yiling high and dry and thus have no choice but to sell it off. Fortunately Yiling found someone who is selling a H&S skimmer at a wonderful price and he immediately reserved it. Shoelevy saw the thread much later and realized that Yiling is the one who reserve it, he PM Yiling accusing him of snatching the H&S from him. What is this? In the 1st place he claimed that Macro is good openly and strongly advises a new reefer to buy it. Then when the new reefer tried it and decides to get a better skimmer - Shoelevy pressured the new reefer to release to him. What kind of "Senior" will do that? And for this Red Sun issue, he simply claimed that the issues have be settled with the individual parties without even giving proper apologies or confirmation by the individual parties involved.
-
What do you expect people to feel? For no reasons and no prior knowledge, you came and posted something so controversial without any apology and you expect people to forgive you just like that?????
-
Shoelevy: I came into this thread to correct misinformation by you, if you have not started your disbelieve - I woulod not come into the picture. Why I have chose to correct you is that I was there together with Dispar and Yiling during the purchase of the Red Sun and would like to attest to the claim that the Red Sun exist. Just like reefer such as Gothia, Fuel and Dispar, we tried to correct your opinion. So do you think people like us owe Voltron 2000 an apology? I doubt so, as if you have never start to contradict others post without prior knowledge - none of us will need to attend to it. In fact, I believe you should thank us for correcting you. But you chose otherwise. You have continously chose to ignore comments that there is Red Sun and continously claimed that Yiling's suns is losing colour and you don't think you owe him an apology????
-
Shoelevy: For you information, this thread is started Voltron 2000 asking reefers to showcase their super sun corals. Voltron 2000's inetention Yiling showed his Red Sun, is there anything wrong with that? You came in to says that there is no Red Sun and even promises and apology if there is really a Red Sun. Seniors such as Fuel and Dispar came in to says that there is really a REd Sun. Did you keep to your words? No, you chose to turn this thread into a personal agenda with Yiling. By him posting of April 29 does not equate that he bought the Red Sun on the 29Th April. I guess you have never heard or practiced "Quaratine & Aclimate". Btw, the date as to when Yiling bought the Red Sun is not the issues - what is more impotant is that it is a REd Sun and it have yet to loose colour as you have wished! Just like the intention of this post is to invite reefers to post their Super Sun for the reefers to enjoy then to invite reefers to post their Suns for your crititicsms and scrutiny. So before you start scritinising others thread I suggest you start with yours. I believe you still owe Yiling an apology.

Hi Sunny, the polyps of the red suns should be orange. The red suns usually have red tissues covering the corallites walls while the polyp remains orange.
-
They are actually zooplankton feeders. I am kept one for 4 moths liao without any deliberate feeding. I kept it in my dsb sump together with my 2 griess, 1 pair of coral banded shrimps and 1 tanagroai goby. All without deliberate feeding. To me, the garden eels are very shy and gentle creatures that will not bother small fishes (even griess). But must never be kept with more aggressive fishes.

Best of Lucks Seamonkee! "Get a job and start paying for the bacon!" (Voices from behind you)

I am glad that the forum is becoming a place where evil is being nip at the bud! Kudos to all bros and sis who have uphold justice in one way or another.

Hi JPaul, No offense taken. How I wished I can be an owner of a LFS. No, I am just a fellow reefer. We dun do ranking by Barracuda or Copepod here, at least not for me. There are still jokers out there with higher "rank" than me but still give misinformation. Since you have found a willing buyer who have obviously read this thread and have benefitted from your reduction of price, I believe I have done my part too. Cheers

Yah loh, for some among us, it is easier to believe a haox than the truth.
