look like an old posting, I like to continue from here Most of reefers are into cheato sump. For cheato sump for nutrients export. Is it true, the cheato sump has to be of appropriate size to the main tank. Is this true? as i have seen some other reefers using small compartment in the sump for this method. some reefers even use a plastic to house cheato in the sump. is it still effective?

what is the water flow recommended? can i modify ( split the main outlet pipe to the tray? ) As i do not want to add another water pump into the sump.

Hi all, Anyone use before the ATS tray and found it useful? can any experience reefers with ATS share with me. Am looking to build one in my sump. For a 3-4 feet tank, what is the minimum require size tray to be effective to control nitrate and PO4? Is the water flow to the ATS important? i read there are different type of ATS. Some build in the sump water with air bubbles and the other type like T-shape hanging on the air and one more like 45deg. Which is better? Thank you in advance.

Need advise on tank equipment setup.
gymbvolka replied to Nickel's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
yes i agree with most of advise above. since you are only planning and may move to sps and clam later, why not get a tank with sump. is much easier if you want to add in little equipments in your sump. If you have a sump , you do not need a canister and you can have more option for skimmers. -
need help with regards to water level!
gymbvolka replied to fidsmacko's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
check your tank placement in the house. best to choose area that has better air ventilation/ cool area and not near any heat source ( example next to a TV or has direct sun exposure). agree for smaller tank , evaporation can be obvious. Check your lighting. T5 can cause more heat than LED. Topping DI water daily or every 3 days is ok. but check your SG and PH level every week to maintain ideal parameter. -

just sharing not a led guru. In general, Led light do not depend on the wattage. But at least choose a 3w each for bulb emitter. ( stronger light source) Marine aquarium Led depend on the quality of the bulb use that give high PAR or PUR Value. (example the cree XPG (white) and XPE (blue) the next important thing we need to know is the type of lens needed.) for a 2.5 ft tank depth, best to choose a mixture of lens. You can select the best combination of lens that best suit your coral placement. for LPS corals that need strong light and placement is bottom, you can choose a 70 degree lens to focus on that area. LPS and softie, i think in general, they are ok from 70-90 deg lens. 40 to 70 degree for sps. -

i will go for 100% cree led lighting. I think the sponsors here bring in some good LED lighting or to save some bucks, you can get a decent sec hand one. -

save the (2 damsel and 3 nemo), take out and separate using another pail. We should all be a responsible reefer What do you intend to keep? if Fowlr - lighting is not very critical. Sofie and LPS - good LED are ok. Easy SPS like BN or Monti - should be able with good LED set Acropora and other difficult sps - beware of LED My 2 cents -
1/10 chiller from artica? it should support 2 ft well. if it burnt out so fast, i think the chiller is faulty and maybe is an old equipment.

Seahorse prefer low light also right? is best to keep seahorse in another special compartment.

No! you cant add copper with starfish. It will kill the starfish.

Topup water & Water Change
gymbvolka replied to gavintan87's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
water change is a must. but not every week, however it depend on your bio load. if you have alot of big fishes and feeding regularly, then i think is best to do 10-20% water change. this also depend on what equipement you have in your sump to control the water parameters. SPS need good to ideal water parameters. if you have very little live stock, you can even do water change like every 2-3 week. Why do you need to top up so much water every week? due to water evaporation? -
I choose 1264 for 4 ft. The overall tank turn over rate should be at least 10 X ( total volume of the tank + sump volume)/ hr and we have to minus the head loss of the sump to the main tank height. my 2 cents
