in nature, sunflower lives in nutrient-laden water...meaning very "dirty"(with lotsa food floating around) water...that is where they are found...just like goniopora... u need to target feed them because u will not be able to provide them with all the nutrients that they can find in the wild...and flooding your tank with enormous amount of food will cost serious DOC problem... unless u are very patient, i suggest u skip this coral...its quite tiring to target feed all of them...each polyp needs to be feed individually, as they dun not share the food...

wat a mess in your house... i believe all your experiments only show 1 thing...lotsa bubbles...

do u have a trace element test kit?? dun think so... i used to follow the recommended dosage for my old tank, end up everything died...overdosed... unless u are able to test the level, if not try not to dose...dosing blindly will kill everything... some senior reefers do dose trace element but that is after years and years of experience... in fact, our tap water has all the trace elements required...so i dun think there is a need to dose additionally..

Why Corals Always Opened so Nicely in LFS?
typrobin replied to damsels's topic in General Reefkeeping_
one thing we should also note is that when they are in the LFS, they dun need to go thru long period of stress (no lights) but when we buy them, we are looking towards keeping them for months and years, not a few days only... if u use only FL, your corals will open also, but its like us being feed only bread everyday, and dying off slowly... -
i say its all bout feeling...u should not be the only one giving or taking...or understanding or understood... should be both ways...

use of egg crates for live rock scaping
typrobin replied to shoelevy's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
make sure that they will not be visible, if not its gonna look very very unnatural... creates more space for big fishes to hide as well...but dun forget tat by doing this, u will sacrifice the goodness of having more LRs... -
not really true...if ur performance is good and if the course that u are signing up for is relevant then they will allow u... lets say u are thinkin bout studying in NUS NTU or SMU, then dun have to worry at all...they will even pay your school fees and give allowance...only that u have to go back to work during your school breaks...this applies for officers, not too sure about others... i suggest tat u call up the hotline and enquire...it will be much bettert than listening to pple like us who cannot ensure anything...

the rule of thumb is 1 tang per 40gallon of water... but in singapore the rule of thumb is as many as u wish per gallon of water...hahahha... from wat i understand, some tangs are more aggressive than others...eg, sohal has terrible temper and AT too...others like red sae sailfin and alantic blue are more gentle... my yellow tang whacks the hell out of my sailfin though the sailfin is much larger... try not to keep too many of the same species in 1 tank, such as 5 YT in a single tank..the more they look like each other, the more they will fight...similarly for other fishes like gobies and watever not..only schooling fishes like chromis and anthia won't fight...most fishes are territorial.. its nice to have a school of YT, i wish i can do tat, but make sure they have enough space...5 ft is too small for 5 YT...that's just my opinion, u might think otherwise... enjoy reefing!!!

different brands of skimmers usually use different technologies to create bubbles. beckett , uses a beckett fountain nozzle to produce fine bubbles.. AquaC uses a patented technology called spray injection... H&S uses needlewheel to chop the bubbles into ultra fine bubbles all of the different types has its pros and cons..all are aiming for 1 thing, to create lotsa fine bubbles.. are u thinkin of DIYing one? i think u need to do a lot of research... if u are thinkin of buying one...then here is a breakdown PRICE 1) beckett + needlewheel 2) AquaC 3) venturi 4) air stone performance 1) beckett + needlewheel 2) AquaC 3) venturi 4) air stone there are lotsa other factors too...too much to explain here...maybe u'll like to do more research...

the last time i had a venus fly trap, i was told that watering the plant would be sufficient as insects serve more like a supplement... but i doubt so, mine died after about 2mths.. i have no idea how u wanna catch insects for them.. for venus fly trap, their trap is activated when something tickers the inside of the trap, so my suggestion is to drop an insect right into the centre and irritate the surface with a toothpick..never tried b4, just suggesting.. pitcher even easier, just drop the insect into the "toilet bowl" lo...try to feed live insects, cos i think they will reject dead ones...
