zoas and other easy corals for newbies.

hmmm think instead of target feeding ill just switch off the filter for about 10-15minutes and point the wavemaker at the zoas.. that should be sufficient for them right? -

Hmmm thx for the advise! I'm using really low level led lighting by aquazonic so they only open when the white lights are on.. When I off the white light, leaving the blue light only, they close up after a few minutes.. must be because my blue light isn't powerful enough. lol time to upgrade. I would prefer to target feed so that at least there's a higher chance of them getting my food instead of it getting into the filter and adding to the bioload. thanks for the advise! Cheers:) -

Hi guys... had my tank running for a few months and today i added my first batch of corals (zoas) cos many have advised me that its the easiest. However, ive got a few questions and need some general advise. If i switch off the lights, the polyps for zoas will close. So when i switch it on again, they will open. However if I am to switch off the lights for a longer period of time, say a day, will they die? Or will they just open up once the lights are on. Also about zoas melting....Dont really understand. Having read a post about target feeding in the forum, How often do i need to do so if im using kent marine coral food.? Ive hearded some reefers mentioned that zoas give out toxins that have cause their fishes to die? How can these be prevented? I dont want to risk a tank crash. Since im using LED lighting, is it true that zoas and other corals need the white light to grow and the blue lights are mainly to showcase their colour? sorry, have been keeping fishes but this is my first time trying to sustain some corals. Need some advise:) thanks

Hi.. I can what you mean cos it happened to me before when I was using some china brand nano iOS. however now that I'm using a oceanfree nano3, water levels in all my 3 compartments are constant. Hmmm Did you add additional media in any of the compartments?

hi guys, wishing all a happy new year! Need advise, ive got a 34l oceanfree nano which have been running on IOS and a dymax iq skimmer for the past 4 months. Only have one true perc clown and one electric blue hermit crab . When i got my clown 3 months ago, and first placed it in the tank, i noticed it only swims near the surface towards the back of the tank. First, i tought its because of poor water quality but i already completed the cycle and tested to make sure, water quality is fine. Then i tought its because of low levels of oxygen so i increased the surface flow from the return pump. my salinity is kept at 0.21 and temperature from 26-27 throughout the day. i also added a wavemaker to create more flow at the bottom 3 months has passed and my clownfish is still swimming near to the surface! it dosent swin below to my live rocks are unless it sees some food there, then swins back to the surface. It looks healhty and no sings of diseases. So i tought maybe its that particular fishes behavior. So today i got another clown clown and noticed that it swins at the same area together with my existing clown (near to the surface). Anyone can tell me why is this so? Both look healthy. I do a 10% wc weekly. Btw, i used to have a damsel 3 months ago. which was totally the opposite and swam everywhere in the tank but i removed it after a few days as it was agressive towards my clown. I really donw know whether theres any problem with my tank such that that my clowns keep swiming near the surface. Can anyone advise? cheers !

I like how you make simple nano reefs just using a simple hob filter, thumbs up!!! .. any reason for not using a sand bed?

Hi, newbie here I have a 10g nano fowlr and have had a healthy clownfish and a hermit crab for about 3 months... Yesterday, I Inteoduced a new clownfish(without quarantine). Now, I can see itch developing on both my clownfish.. So, I would like to ask.. If I remove both clown fishes and put them in a quarantine tank.....Will removing these fishes eliminate the itch in my existing tank? Do I have to remove my hermit crab as well? I don't see any itch on it.

haha yup the skimmer is really of no use... I just placed it there for the time being but I changed the stock wood block to the sanders2.. Some might say for a tank that size don't need skimmer , just frequent water change. I also intend to change the return pump for more flow... I tried using a sunsun nano wavemaker but it heated the tank cos I'm not using a chiller so I removed it. Also afraid if I change the pump, The new pump will heat up the tank....
