  1. all silicon used for holding glass together are the same in my knowledge.. unless u go for dow corning black silicon which is stronger but takes much longer to set. think companies come up with reef-safe silicon to mark up the price. silicon should always be kept dry while it is setting.

  8. NSW u buy from LFS is from SIngapore waters too. it's true. Large trucks go to the beach and pump large amounts of water into their water tank and transports it to LFSes to be sold.

  14. I always sweep all the salt crystals formed on my tank brace into the tank. the salt crystals fall on my corals etc no problem. But I think changing water is totally different. When u change a substantial amount of ur tank water, say 30%, u must ensure the salt is fully dissolved and all reactions have stopped before adding to main tank. If u pour the newly mixed water in straightaway, the exorthermic reactions that takes place will shock the corals. Try mixing one pail full of salt water. add the salt needed at one go. feel the salt and water. you will feel that the water is v warm and even hot. this is due to exorthermic reactions taking place. It is probably the stress that induced ich outbreak. these salt crystals cannot logically directly effect an ich outbreak.

  21. as long as the bioballs dun trap detritus and solid waste it should not be a nitrate factory. You should utilise Filter wool to filter off any large organic particles from the water before allowing the water to pass thru the bioballs. But of course this filter wool has to be raised above the water level otherwise you're not achieving anything. The concept behind this is that, the solid organic particles dun get to stay in the water and rot thus no nitrate will accumulate in the water. I'm not too sure abt riot's views though. if you're talking about creating anaerobic conditions, submerging it in the water is useless. There is a high level of dissolved oxygen in the water thus it is still aerobic. This is the reason why DSBs and Plenums are required to be set up for NNR.
