want to know more about lights
ryz replied to SBS_Transit's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
They don't stop growing. are you refering to zooanthids or the zooxanthelle algae? Anyway 20,000k Sounds great to me. Very blue though haha. I like. Zooxanthelle do not need much light to grow and fluorish. It's just that photosynthethic substances like chlorophyll absorb and utilise light of lower color spectrum better. High Kelvin wouldn't and shouldn't hinder their growth or affect their health. Don't worry about it. They are not very demanding in the light aspect. -
can I just get 1 of them?

yea you could get a 10,000 Kelvin lighting and supplement it with actinic lighting(makes zooxanthelle fluorescence) Looks good! up to you actually. I personally prefer higher kelvin bulbs -
DYMAX lighting, is it good, can anyone help!

emerald crabs eat macros, if you don't have macros then you shouldn't be needing them. -

The watt per gallon rule was invented for Normal Output Fluorescent lamps. However, PCs give 3 times or more the output of a Fluorescent lamp or the same wattage. so with 7 watts of PCs per gallon, you're actually getting abt 7x3 watts per gallon of light. However many debate that the watts pergallon rule is crap. But I beleive that if you have a 3 feet tank, about 2 or 3 PCs of the highest wattage would do. -
ok lah. just trying to negotiate mah. learn from my mum. Give specs pls. I'm seriously interested. Post a pic, need to see it( for aesthetic reasons)

hmmm... I see. Why aren't they reef safe? do they eat croals etc? I figured they're too small to cause much harm. And are often eaten by fish and adds to the biodiversity of your aquarium. and besides They are too small to cause much harm, just nature. Unless you have an infestation.

how & what to feed/care for ANEMONE?
ryz replied to newcomer's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
U mean tube worms?? They are filter feeders and only take zooplankton and other small food. You could dose some Dts in your tank. any food for filter feeders would suffice. -

Sorry to say but ocellaris clowns usually dun host anemones. Bubble tip anemones don't usually host clowns too. Lighting alone is not sufficient for it to be healthy and grow. It need Proteinaceous food such as chopped shrimp etc for it to grow. Zooxanthelle algae in it can only provide energy for it to do some activities(loccomotion, vital activities etc.) for it to grow and be healthy, it need to be fed meaty food like chopped prawns (marine)/ chopped fish(marine) etc. That is the main source where anemones get their raw material to create new cells and grow. You should read up on anemone nutrition. Just leave some chopped prawns on it and it will bring it to its mouth wrapping it up until it is ingested. I feed my carpet, bubble, sebae and ritteri anemone once every other day with about 5% of its mass of chopped shrimp. Be sure to feed your anemone. Some anemones like bubble tipped anemones like to attach themselves in deep crevices as they feel more secured in there. Find a good spot for it that is accessible to you and let it attach. If it is satisfied, it should not move around too much. For beginners I would suggest keeping bubble tipped anemones as they are hardier and less demanding. keep your powerhead intake away from your anemone though, as they might get sucked in and torn into pieces, causing a system crash. Do a search on google for coral and marine critters nutrition. There's a good article by some prof on it. HTH -
anemone, is it harmful to the fish?
ryz replied to tahir69's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Anemones are not harmful to fishes in normal circumstances. ACtually I have 4 of them in my 3 feet tank(mostly Fish only, agressive). They feed on food that drops on their tentacles. They will bring them to their mouths. However, when severely stressed(which rarely happens) They can go asexual(or is it sexual? I forgot) and release reproductive stuff(small individual"spore-like stuff" that will grow into an individual entity) into the water that are usually highly toxic to other inhabitants. But this rarely happens dun worry. PS. Correct me if I'm wrong. I might have remembered wrongly and maybe this happens to some other corals. -
some nutrients that marine creatures need in their diet only comes from other marine creatures (amino acids etc). Mysis shrimps are good source of food. However you should try to feed more than one type of food and interchange them now and then as diff foods have diff compositions. I however do not understand your need for feeding live food. Frozen does the job just as well.. Most LFS should sell what you need. Marine pellets or flakes are fine too IMHO.

Canister filter brand and model??? Interested. Please be more specific.

Is your coralline algae bleaching or growing? If it's bleaching, there would be one uniform patch of white stuff on your LR. If there are just white dots on the coralline(like snow fallen on it) then it is showing signs of growth. Search for some articles on coralline algae.

Don't ever cycle your tank with any livestock in it! Most Luvestock cannot tolerate high levels of ammonia or nitrite! even if you have hardy fishes live damsels, they will still be put under a lot of stress and quite definietly die! Invertebrates are even more sensitive to Ammonia and Nitrite so dun add Livestock without first cycling your tank. But If your mother is pantang and want to have some fish in the tank, then get ready for some deaths. However your tank do not seem to be cycling. Do you have enough LR in the tank? Are your LRs cured? Are you using LRs? or some other base rock?(granite? etc?) Add some nitrifying bacteria that you can get in bottles in any LFS to kick start the process. and since you already have fish in there, you should have some bioload. But it would still be good to throw in some fish food or whatever for the bacteria to break down as food. Even if your LRs were cured, you still will get some die off. Wonder why there is no Ammonia sspike. What life have you seen in your LR?? Maybe you're one off case where there is no die off. then good for you.

snails and shrimps to live in bare tank setup?
ryz replied to arcanehacker's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Make sure the LR you get is cured if not toxic ammonia and nitrite will build up and kill ur fishes. Yes Shrimps and snails can be kept. Just give the shrimps enough space to hide and seek refuge. get more LR. It looks good anyway. Snails feed on algae. and need no feeding. They are part of the clean up crew in the tank. Usually people don't keep them because they want to, They do because they need to. as for the snail feedings, if there are no algae, depending on the species, you might be able to sustain it on vegetables thrown into the tank. I suggest you get some sand. Better for LR to hold(wouldn't slip as glass too smooth, thus can't get nice positioning) and looks better too. Get scarlet cleaner shrimp as they are small, hardy easy to manage and are relatively bold. Even walk up your hand and pick dead skin off it. They are easy to feed too. Just mkae sure you do not have any Livestock in your tank while it's cycling. -
COPPER = BAD!!! ALL INVERTS HATE COPPER. even a trace amount would most definitely kill all your inverts in your LR and all. Vertebrates however can tolerate copper. Get rid of your copper before you add any more things. Get rid of your DIY chiller and get copper remover ASAP. save whatever life you can. Saltwater corrodes almost every coating. Even stainless steel rusts in saltwater. So the coating is rendered useless in saltwater aquariums

Anemones need good light get 2 55w of PL lighting on tt or get 1 55w and supplement with actinic. Chop shrimp or fish will do. Just leave them on the tentacles of the anemone and it will bring it to it's mouth. However you must feed it marine fish and prawns as freshwater ones don't contain the essential amino acids that they need(only found in marine creatures). AS long as you find a good spot for the anemone to attach, It will not move around. Do not however buy Ritteri anemones. They are not known to do well in captivity and move about often, stinging other corals. A good position for an anemone is one with constant but moderate to light current, Abundant light, and visually pleasing location. Try not to put two anemones too closely together. I suggest you scout LFS for anemones that are already hosting clowns and do some research on the species of anemone then buy one. DON"T IMPULSE BUY! Bubble Tip Anemones are hardy, don't have a nasty sting, looks good but usually doesn't host any clowns. Carpet anemones: REadily hsts clowns, nasty sting. BIG

There is no need to kill the flat worm From what I know they're beneficial hitchhikers that feeds on algae. therefore I see no need to crucify it. Treat all life equally. Imagine how it's family would react to its demise. Think of it's children. Have a heart save some lives. Nah I'm just bullshitting.

ryz replied to tahir69's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
what wattage is that Lighting? Get about 7 watts worth of PL lighting on your tank and you can keep most things. It's would be however more economical if you just went with a MH setup -
I second that Razo. However My bicolor dottyback is housed with several scarlet skunk cleaners with no problems at all.
