arcanehacker replied to arcanehacker's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
up... -
Place the tube higher.. and turn the knob at the end of the tube (if any) to allow more air to go in.. its usually the case.. And yeah.. new skimmers take time to kick in..

arcanehacker replied to arcanehacker's topic in Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop
Updates: 1) Deltec NF 509 Sulphur Denitrator $200 2) Aquamedic ORP Monitor Can be used for negative reading, eg in Denitrator use. Note that this is the EU version. I can however provide the necessary 3pin plug converter. $150 3) American Marine Pinpoint ORP Controller $100 More info: http://www.americanmarineusa.com/orpcontrollerfacts.html Note: I only got one old probe (>1yr) for 2 or 3. First to get the controller can request for it. If you want to reuse, its really up to you. Rule of thumb for these probes is to change them every yr or so. Collection at Jurong West St 65 -

Little wriggly worms
arcanehacker replied to arcanehacker's topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
Yeah.. something like that.. I think my tank got season for breeding different such stuff.. first there are very tiny jellyfish like stuff.. then there are small shrimp like pods.. now there are worm thingy.. I'm not concerned at all coz I know they do not affect anything.. just curious. BTW have you IDed these worm things? -
Little wriggly worms
arcanehacker replied to arcanehacker's topic in Disease treatment/parasite/pest control
Nope.. worms. not pods nor shrimp like.. -
Just yesterday I noticed little wriggly worm like thingy swimming around.. They look like those bloodworms for FW feeds, only not thinner and lighter almost white. I haven't got any photos coz I don't have a decent cam and was late.. Oh yeah, they seem to only appear when lights are off.. Couldn't see them this morning. I also don't think its affecting anything else. I only got Yumas and Mushies.. I thought they were spawn but I can't think of anything that could spawn swimming 'worms'.

How to know the sex of Harlequin Shrimp ??
arcanehacker replied to Regal's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Look at the bottom where the legs are.. the males' are colourless. The females have patches of colour similar to their body's. Its hard to tell if they are in the tank unless the go stretching upwards exposing their under-bellys. Else, you can bag them and look under. From my exprience, the males are pretty docile.. Its the females that tent to fight.. If you got a big enough tank and hopefully both females stay to their side, it shouldn't be a problem. Then again, you will never know. I had once kept 1 male and 2 females before.. funny thing is the male tends to stray (tiger woods style).. hehe.. It will usually be loyal to the true mate but occasionally will go over to the other female for a few days. Species of different colours should be ok together.. just get 1 of each sex to be on safer side. -
layer of brown oil like on water surface

You should be able to add in the surface skimmer attachment to your redsea prizm. That should solve your immediate problem.. -

Sump with less partition as possible is good.. but for no partition.. might need more work in other ways.. Firstly, one will need a separate refugium. Unless like you mentioned already DBS so might not see the need for that. If not, a first compartment makes sense. Then one would need something in place to prevent protein skimmer micro-bubbles from entering the main tank.. this can be easily reduced with a decent designed last compartment. Center no need for any.. good to have space for all other equipments..

Once they set sight on one, they constantly go for it.. even if there are many other empty ones around. I had a hermit which eyed on one of the snail's shell.. I've seen it attacking the snail few times. I intervened and separated them at different corners for few times.. I even had many other empty ones around and the hermit is just not interested.. Then one day I saw the hermit happily in its new shell.. .. you should have guessed which shell..

I'd say more effective way of getting rid of red slime is to redirect water flow. It thrives in dead spots only.. I've had 2 wavemakers broken down before. Didn't bother to replace them for months. Red slime grew quite a lot at one end of my tank. Then finally got new wavemakers and the slime is gone again. They are too weak to withstand decent water flow.

Help!!! my skimmer gone crazy?!?!?
arcanehacker replied to qwertman321's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I can surely say its normal.. anything you add to your tank may affect the skimmer.. try filter wool.. no matter how much you rinse, its gonna make the skimmer go really crazy.. Anyway it wouldn't be long before your skimmer goes back to normal.. -
and people selling 300-350 second hand Deltec models are probably too under powered for a 4ft tank.. you should be looking for the AP701 or H&S150 or models in league. Anything smaller and you would find yourself washing the cup everyday..
