I personally know someone who keeps a FOWLR tank with many fishes without skimmer. Fish all with him for at least 6 months and pui-pui... Can't comment on correctness, just reporting what I saw but have to admit I am surprised/shocked when I saw it.

You did not mention your lifestock, i.e. what fishes do you have? Some fishes attack shrimps.

washing of LR with tapwater
marcvelous replied to Oceandeep's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
From experience, pretty hard to totally remove all unless you opt to kill the LR. Good side is no harmful or gross hitchhikers. Bad side is beneficial bacteria killed. Bacteria will grow back (re-colonise) your dead rock to become LR again with time. So depend on what are your priorities. I wash my rocks and sun dry them for two weeks to kill everything before using them coz I hate hitch-hikers. When you see the type and amount of hitch-hikers in your LR, then you know why I do that! -
Need recommendation on dry fish food.
marcvelous replied to kschew1498's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Both formula 1 and 2 has garlic. Formula 1 is seafood (carnivorous) while Formula 2 is seaweed (herbivorous), or vice-versa. Quite easy to differentiate. The blue bottle is seafood and the green bottle is seaweed! Tried Kent for my previous tank but none of the fish eat. Maybe I don't train them but I didn't train my current fishes too (except the Mandarin which I am trying to ween to eat prepared food) -
Read somewhere that live brine shrimps are very useful for weening difficult to feed fishes to eat prepared food and bought some to try. $3 packet so much that in order not to waste, feed to main tank's inhabitants as well as fish still in QT. Then realised that original fish in main tank become very aggressive, especially towards inverts and tubeworms after they tasted live brine shrimp!!! Their previous diet consist mainly of dried pellets and cyclo... after the live brine shrimps, now they attack my shrimps and tubeworms... My angel now undergoing rehabilitative confinement... Anyone got similar experience?

Fishes and LS in Our Singapore Reef tanks
marcvelous replied to DeepBlue's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Me tank all cheapo fishes: 1 x Blue Tang (Dory, my fiancee's favourite, king of the tank) 1 x Royal Dottyback (Colourful) 1 x juv Emperor Angel (Circles, currently imprisoned in beta-box for nibbling) 1 x Yellow Watchman Goby (Frowny) 2 x Common Clown (Nemo and Marlin, no creativity so no choice) 1 x Mandarin (New & Un-named as yet) 1 x Bi-Colour Blenny (Gurgle) 2 x Cleaner Shrimp 1 x Blood Shrimp (Bitz, hoping to name partner Piezes) 1 x Saron Shrimp (Rocky) -
How long has this been going on already? Mandarin fish colour will fade at night and intensify in the day. This will be useful . Originally posted by CalciumReef

Hah hah... Just to share my experience... I have a professed phobia for hitch-hikers. THis is what I did the last time when I tried to get rid of hitch-hikers: 1. Dip LR in tapwater for 2 days. 2. Remove all exposed hitch-hikers 3. Hypo-salinity treatment (Soak in super salty saltwater) for 1 day 4. Remove yet more carcasses 5. Rinse with tapwater and leave to air for 2 days Some of the feared hitch-kikers include: 1. Worms 2. Crabs 3. Isopods 4. Mantis shrimp At the end of about one week, I still find some hitchhikers on the (by now, dead) rocks which are elusive and I cannot get at!!!!! That is why I only use DEAD rocks now. Any crabs, no matter how herbivorous will still be harmful to your LS especially if you intend to keep teeny weeny stuff like I do. Better be safe than sorry man...

Errr..... Can anyone point me in the right direction and not let this thread become a discussion about snails which I'd be very happy to read AFTER I find out where to get? Tor-long tor-long tell me lah...!

Thanks everyone for your help. Didn't know that there are some shops that cannot be named. Kinda reminds me of Harry Potter and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named Please pardon me but I really don't know what some of you are talking about. If you dun mind a few clicks, I would very much appreciate if you can pm or email me the name of the LFS who has nassarius snails for sale. I tried P@r@d** R*** @ Race Course Road but they only have Cerith snails (not very good). I don't know of any other shops near Reborn except Aquamart and Ocean Planet. Hope I'm not breaking any rules but I thought we are in here to share knowledge and information?

Thanks for your feedback... BUT I have no idea what is ###### supposed to mean. Can you either state the name (if it's sponsor, I don't think got problem) give some hints (if not sponsor), or email or pm me. Cheers

Small white insect crawling on tank wall
marcvelous replied to Rocks's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Eh... if your tank entirely no copepods, then your mandarin eat what? I think sure will still have some within the rocks. Juz FYI, I read somewhere before that some reefers use a small fruit basket and line the inside with small pieces of LR then invert this "nest" in their tank to grow copepod. This way, the copepods can grow and reproduce in the nest without the fish eating them all up. WHen the pods are ready they will find their way out of the "nest" and the fish can consume. -
Can see from your pic that your rain bar installed above water level. This will cause splashes and you will find salt crusted in the area around your tank. Things also tend to rust faster. Also, power is lost and that's why you need the powerhead which can be dangerous if it's as powerful as you described. You don't need to use this method to aerate the water as your skimmer will do that for you. Furthermore, having to install the rainbar above the waterline also means your water level lower. I'm no expert but just want to share my setup in the pic below. I have 3 water intake, the green column on the left is the surface skimmer, can suck water from both top and bottom ends. Skimmer intake is the dark grey in the centre (directly behind nemo) and lastly on the right is normal water intake pipe for canister filter. Rainbar is installed below the water line to fully utilise the power of the 1000l/hr rated canister so that there is sufficient circulation and no need for powerhead. Look at sandbed! juz me two cents and limited experience
