Dear Fellow Reefers, I am sketching out something for my future tank. Appreciate if you can give feedback if it is viable, possible to proceed and what will be the disadvantages before approaching a tank maker The plan for the whole tank is like a combination of a 2ft shallow tank (partitioned) + 4ft tank. Aesthetic aspect is highly considered; hence the combination of shallow area (with Mangrove area + seashore cliff where I would like to see some small breaking waves) and main tank area. I prefer to have a non-merely box-look type of tank. The drawing only covers the high level main compartments (no sump design, lighting placement, etc.) Thanks a lot for the feedback/advice!

Thanks, Gouldian Have not seen any LFS selling this. It looks nice. Initially I though it was a freshwater tank but how come got leather coral.

Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
solasido replied to moscowites's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I bought RWS invite package with 2 free adult tickets. But waiting till school holiday is over before visiting; else too crowded not worth it. -
The bad one is the hairy one. It eat up the polyp. I just killed one this week and fed my puffer fish.

Mine is room temperature using fan. My chiller is never switched on. With fan the temperature is 27-28 day time. On hottest day it goes to 29 only. Sps is growing, no issue. However I do notice that when temp is cool like nowadays between 26-27, the polyps are more open, longer.

Clownfish sucking on hammer tentacle tip
solasido replied to solasido's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Yes, it looks like baby sucking Thanks, bro. -
I noticed today that my clowns hosting on my hammer will suck on the hammer tentacle tip once in a while. Looks quite funny. Are they feeding the hammer?

Any nice box fish spotted? I learned the hard way, I fed chopped market prawn to my juvenile boxfish, apparently it is too big, I found it dead the next day. Seems that it got suffocated by the food. I feel so sad. All the while he has been healthy swim like a running puppy until I fed the chopped market prawn. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

SPS only tank - Should be fed or no feeding
solasido replied to solasido's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Thanks guys. I think, if I try to understand it; the coral consist of the coralite and the polyp. While the coralite is from calcium carbonate, the polyp is protein based. If coral grows, it needs both coralite and the polyps; therefore it will need protein source to grow. This protein is then obtained from fish-waste or food. This explains if we extra feed it, the growth and coloration will be better. -
Recommended salinity for FOWLR
solasido replied to aquamike's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
I have a small brackish water setup for my green spotted puffers (salinity at 1.010) Then I got this aggressive yellow belly damsel and 6 line wrasse, so I remove them from my marine tank and drop them into my brackish water tank. They have been there for about 2-3 months and living well. Last month I bought a box fish, it got ich, so I drop it into this brackish water tank as well. They all live well in there. 6 line wrasse is the king there, it chased over the damsel when fighting for food. The Green spotted puffers which are 2x bigger does not dare to confront the wrasse and damsel. The Boxfish seems to be ignored by them all. It is the most comical fish that I enjoy watching. To save $ on salt, since I do 1-2x water changes on my reef tank a week, I will save the changed water that I will use for the brackish water tank water change (by adding tab water until salinity drop from 1.025 to 1.010) in the weekend. My brackish water tank has got Java fern plants that will help in absorbing nitrate. The tank does not have any mechanical filtration. I just have substrate and do 50% water change every week. -
Zoa 28dC is okay. For a pico tank, routine water changes is mandatory. By keeping zoas only, you should only need to monitor salinity, because once cycled NH3 NO2 should not be an issue (only an issue if you suddenly introduce high bio load). Since you need to do routine water changes (distiller water or DI water), NO3 and PO4 will not be a problem. Presence of various algae can be used as good indicator of NO3 and PO4. Thus the conclusion is that during cycling you need NH3 NO2 (if got NO3 will be better but we can aasume if NH3 and NO2 have gone down from the spike, NO3 is up). After cycling you should only need a hydrometer or refractometer.

I use Bright well Biofuel (carbon source) for my 20g tank, NO3 reduced from 5ppm to 1ppm within 1-2 weeks.

Check with Iwarna or Fish Channel

Hi bro, you can consider using bubble stone or strip at the back to increase gas exchange. It will look cool if you properly place it.
-
I bought a bottle from MadPetz about last month just before the close for renovation; it is a good one like the previous bottle I bought from Iwarna several months ago.
-
oh, i think probably your LR is not limited only to green hair algae but other types which Sea Urchin/Snails may not have appetite on.
-
why not just buy Sea urchin and astrea snails to eat all the algae? then as long as NO3 and PO4 are maintained at low level, they should be kept at bay.
