    MH

My 150W MH is about 10 in above water level. I use a fan and most times temp's at 27C. Early morning, 25-26, max 29C. MH is on 7 hrs. I guess temp is controlled because there's no other light except a 20W actinic. BTW the tank's 2 x 1.5 x 1.5. I didn't buy MH for marine - it was originally for FW but obviously supersede the requirement.
  2. More than the min is all right - I suppose more denitrifying bacteria - downside is losing precious space. I read that aragonite is good - suppose to help with calcium levels
  3. could be one of those sea fan? orange colour shaped like yr palm. Didn't buy it because they need feeding almost daily n must be placed in the direct (not too strong) flow of the PH.
  4. Please help - need advice My mini-reef tank is 3 months old. NO3 is 80 mgL. How can I reduce it? There's dull green hair algae on one LR and green blackish stuff (cyanobacteria?) on exposed sand surface. If I use macroalgae to export nutrient, should I plant it in the substrate or just leave it suspended in the tank. Also many LR have bubbles of air on its surface - these could have been produced by internal PS and/or return from HOB filter. I only fear it's sign of more trouble? There's stinko smell from the tank due to evaporation from fan activity - nothing's dying - 12 corals, red wrasse, cleaner wrasse, firefish, CBS & CS - is that 2 many already for 100L tank?
  5. Heard one LFS mention T5. I would certainly be very interested to follow its development. AT, please share with us any news u got.
  6. Any recommendation for a venturi skimmer type if I don't use a sump? I currently use an internal counter-current (i.e. airstone type). Gunk gets collected but it's more like dirty water than the thick brown stuff u guys get. Would like to change - so I suppose the only option is a hang-on venturi? Is Prizm any good? Gracias.
  7. Thanks 4 all yr replies - perhaps I will try mandarin much2 later
  8. I think books are not always true due to different situations/parameters. Experience is best. So nothing beats exchaging info. n learning from veterans. BTW, does the Coralife FL actually says "Actinic 03" on its packaging?
  9. My book recommends max 6 hrs for MH but must be followed by FL before n after. It says more MH hrs will not add any benefit but doesn't say y. My MH runs 7 hrs.
  10. dodo's right ... some may show signs of stress and hence warn u, but IT"S A BIG RISK anything can happen at night or when u're at work
  11. My book says SPS do not need MH - PL is nicely adequate. BTW, what brand is your actinic 03? I'm having a hard time looking for lights here in KL - LFS know next to nothing about K, lumens, lux or spectrum.
  12. What if I cut it off at its base? Will that kill it?
  13. THANKS TANZY! I guess we all know what a toilet looks like.... I propose returning n buy something else. If he refuse to take it back, pull a long face n let him know he will no longer enjoy any more custom from u. My LFS warned me about it but didn't say I can't keep it - only on condition I keep a very closed watch on it daily with evereadiness to dash to the toilet...
  14. wahh...pest also can be attractive .... just like some dangerous female!
  15. I have my bubble directly below the MH n it seems to bloom n bloom... Temp's 27-28C max. Had it since late Nov. I suppose bright light with moderate temp is ok. Otherwise,(touch wood) God help me!
  16. I've got only red wrasse so far - can't find any of the fishes i want like the purple firefish n the bi-color dottyback. i wonder who will be taiko later?
  17. BTW I have this coral I believe it's briareum viridis, still in it's juvenile stage (is that the right term?). It is overgrown (60% - the purple base is only a trace now)with again I believe dinoflagellate. I wonder will dipping in FW help to kill the algae first b4 the coral?
  18. It's normal then, I have to clean my glass every 3 days. Surely, u have seen some tanks with worse problems. Check yr water parameter n keep those "plant" algae. They will absorb excess nitrates which otherwise will only encourage further undesirable algae growth.
  19. U could "boxed" it up within the tank - I'm sure it will "fit"
  20. I don't see much brown algae. Beautiful fox coral u have there. I was told the sea apple is most dangerous when disturbed or dying because it will release toxins in the form of white grains that will pollute the water and kill any fish that eats them. In KL, it costs RM20 each.
  21. Don't have high hopes - I'm not promising anything. Just saying that if u have time it doesn't hurt to see some aquariums. But the one I mentioned is A MUST SEE! BTW, any LFS open during CNY in S'pore? I'll be back in JB from Fri to Mon.
  22. Wahh....if come by busload, I must employ logistic manager!! N also demand commission from LFS for whatever u may buy. Perhaps, 3 max at a time n someone can take pic to post in SRC forum.
