  2. We can go into endless debate about the impact of our hobby, but if we keep to topic at hand, unless I read it wrongly, the message is simple: Stop the trendy livestock keeping, and the exploitation of merchants by driving up the prices. Of course, since assumingly most of us are educated, or opinionated, with at least average mental capacity, we should evaluate if we will allow ourselves to be so easily manipulated? Are we that unoriginal? A typical Singaporean? Have I lost your train of thought, or are they still boarding at the station?
  3. Think you missed the point entirely Roidan, you have to read context instead of sentences. What AC is trying to bring across is the 'manifestation for the mantra that bigger must be better'. And bearing that mentality, proceeds to spend on equipment beyond their means. Means as in not only the initial capital outlay, but also the cost of running it. While the rest of the world are trying to use our resources sparingly; power-efficiency, or simple, economic sense, has been mindlessly discarded for the sake of attaining nirvana. Of course, there are at least 2 distinct category of hobbyist, namely the ones who have money to burn and lead the other category of mindless, opinionless yoyos. Then of course, there is the other group of always entertaining bunch, who can't tell his/her a-hole from a hole in the ground. I refrain from using the word 'reefing' or 'reefer' since how many of us can claim to have a reef at home?
  4. Coral chips still available Sand has been tentatively been reserved, with 2 person in queue.
  5. Now that you are here, I am ABSOLUTELY giving them away.... Can't understand why can't a person with at least moderate mental capacity can't make up his/her mind if its a sale or not, but instead a 'possible' one 02 x pails of #1 sand; and Half a pail of coral chips to give away
  6. The article is straightforward, delivered in manner which is almost like hearing it over a nice cuppa. So agree or agree, this is the lowdown of this hobby.
  7. Then there is the 'silly obsession with over-engineered skimmers', or may equipments in general, is very much the obsession and object of senseless competition within the local hobby community.
  8. In summary, the following points are as follows: Hobbyists who regard themselves as 'progressive' who owns expensive equipment (because they can afford them) and buys livestock which are in vogue. In local context, proceeds to flaunt them in public, thereby creating a hype which will start with a wild demand which the LFS quickly exploit by driving up prices. Worse still are those scumbags taking pale, stressed and or bleached cnidarians and offering them as “rare” pink, yellow or white specimens. It’s profoundly ironic to pay a premium price to an unworthy seller for an inferior specimen. The minority here will agree to that. Ironic is the word to use since the buyer who creates the hype may well for paying premium prices for an inferior specimen which he/she does not understand well enough in the first place.
  9. Finally, a noted dignitary in the hobby and industry outlines the grotesque trend of this hobby, and how the industry toys with misguided hobbyist. In his words: "This article is about unoriginal thinking, nefarious merchant practices and misguided consumer habits." It is a very enlightening article, some points noted is well in the heart of a minority in the marine hobby community. Please find some time to read it at: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-02/ac/index.htm
  10. My Profantecs are 2 years old and still going strong, they are like those 'aunties', good worker but a little loud Thanks for the offer Kevin, I do something a little more powerful. Might try a TOYO Clip on fan, but I wonder if its noisy too
  11. Looking for quiet DC or AC cooling fans to replace my aging Profantec 'the Hummer' fan. Any recomendations? Thanks
  12. 35Cents, Presumably, the rotifers available locally are that of the 'L' strain, you can sieve rotifers using a commercial rotifer net (approx. 65 microns if I'm not wrong). They are sold at at one or two LFSs, but I understand they are out of stock as of 2 weeks ago. While its not entirely undesirable to use the solution along with the rotifers, it may contain waste products which you may or may not want in the nano. Its always prudent to introduce just the feed and not the media itself. I think the LIVE rotifers available at LFS these days are already enriched; presumably with the a good blend of the various strains of phytoplankton. Best you confirm that by reading the labels. Gouldian, Paper coffee filters are typically used for sieving BBS. Unless there's a way to ascertain the micron size of one here, or determine if any rotifers are sieved from the solution, I can't tell for sure.
  13. If you can't tell if the BBS are being consumed, how do you tell if the even smaller rotifers are? Point to note is that dosing LIVE or frozen must be done in a controlled fashion that it does not contribute significantly to the nutrient load in the tank. Especially in a nano when the rate of decline is faster than that of a regular sized tank. Another is that a refugium can only export X amount of nutrient, limited by its size and growth rate of the type/s of macroalage used. It has to be stabilised too, or if and when the macroalgae crashes, there is very little tolerance due to the small water volume. Now, since there is so much talk about using rotifers, may I know how are they fed to the tank? - Poured from solution direct into the water, or - Sieved out first, then fed to the water? Are they enriched? And if so, how and what?
  14. With regards to keeping a sizeable pod population to maintain the D. griessingeri, the real solution is what 35cents have done, keeping a refugium where the fauna can seek refuge from predation and keep populating. Dosing phyto direct into the tank may not necessarily work, and you risk polluting the water even if the phyto you are using is LIVE. Keeping a nano, or for the matter, a specie-only tank is not a simple task and it takes considerable effort to understand, and provide for its environmental and feeding requirement.
  15. As much as I like to keep from commenting since I do not own a D. griessingeri, I am of the opinion that if any further discussions can be made with regards to the feeding of BBS, one should be providing the nutritional profile of freshly hatched Artemia salina or San Francisco nauplii versus that of an unenriched and/or enriched rotifer. The research has already been done, you can find them by doing a general search on Internet.
  16. Yep, I don't see how its poisonous though. It will most certainly predate on smaller fishes and crustaceans in any aquarium, like say your D. griessingeri?
  17. Actually Terryz is right, Discordipinna is the genus. This particular specie from this genus has yet to be named, therefore, Discordipinna sp.
  18. Be careful to ID it properly, or you might just bring a juvenile slingjaw home.
  19. Try resizing with the instructions given here.
  20. *picture is oversizeds, so its removed. Kindly resize and repost in the ID Section. ** you may refer to the instructions here.

  22. Double posting in the wrong thread, and which hardly qualifies as a review. Had to merge, repost and move the thread. Next time remember to post in the appropriate section. Thanks.
  23. And another, with a green mouth. Colour a little off, and kinda blur as I was shooting from the top with a fair bit of water surface aggitation.
  24. As requested by someone, here's one with orange tentacles and green centre. Think picture did not turn out right since I have yet to figure out my new camera.
  25. Wrong Section to post. Please repost in the appropriate section.
