Ahh....the Lord of Merry makers too. Lager? It's this silly chant we used to make in the Tavern when we ask for more 'bier'..... But this year, we guzzled quite a few bottles of wines, 94's - 97's if I'm right ... thing is, it must have reacted with the medicine I was taking, my lips swolled up till I must look like a Lipstick Tang

I rememver when I was browsing aimlessly in a HDB 'pirate' shop when I saw a simuation game based on maintaining a marine tank (like the SIMs series) Dunno how REAL its gets but maybe we can suggest to some of the new guys (including myself..... )
-
Nice....may I know what size is your tank?
-
Well, besides AT for maintaining this wonderful site; informative yet injected with occassional humour , poignant yet we manage to skirt some touchy issues ....... yet its also the varied members who really makes this site shine ..............that's what makes SRC one of my most visited site when I'm online Keep it up guys

Here's to all Reefers..... A Very Very Happy New Year!!!!!!! Looking forward to another great year ahead and hope Lord Atlantis will provide us with many many more wonders of His realm..... LAGER.....LAGER......LAGER........

We're all moving in the right directions now; involved in a tank saving effort. SRC-EMS = Singapore Reef Club Emergency Medical Service? .... Feelings aside, and in line with Tanzy's effort of trying to change general public opinion, we'll try to find [d]3v|L's fishes / corals some place to tide over. So what say we Reefers?

Oops...think I jumped the gun, AT already mentioned it's a male. Spade: haha...that' s a good one
-
Congrats AT....... I'm always a sucker for Seahorses, and do intend to keep them in my sump/refugium too. Kinda curious though if I'm not mistaken its the male who incubate them till birth.....its SQUIRT!!!....out of it pouch or something..... Any pictures?

Woah.....nice..... Great tank Robe, an inspiration...no less.... Shall we eh....organise a viewing?

You got that right, apparently its a delicacy to some people; no point wasting it especially if its taken some of your prized fish, say an Achilles Tang?.....

While surfing I bumped into a site which is apparently dedicated to 'to those people interested in the study and care of stomatopods (mantis shrimps). ' And to think we're all trying to get rid of them Anyways, they happen to have an article on how to dispose of them, I thought I might share it since there are quite a number with the pest problem. Here's an extract: Methods for Capturing Within the Tank: Use live bait to lure it out, then use nets to capture it. This is the simplest technique, and yet may be the least reliable. Use home-made traps to capture the mantis shrimp. One enterprising soul made a funnel-type apparatus by cutting out the top half of a small clear plastic bottle close to where the gradual slope turns to a straight line. He then inserted the top part into the lower half in an inverted position, and secured the whole apparatus by tying a fishing line around the neck of the top half and through a hole in the bottom. A piece of shrimp was secured inside the trap to serve as bait. The Prairie Dog "Suction" Method The exact location of the mantis shrimp's home cavity must first be determined, and the hose of a strong filter is then secured tightly over the hole. The system is left to run overnight, and the stomatopod is invariably found trapped inside the filter when morning comes. In order to work, the mantis shrimp must be of a manageable size, the location of its hole must be precisely determined, and there must not be any other escape routes within the rock. Competing Animals *Use competing animals to control or remove the mantis shrimp. This is much more troublesome and less reliable than using traps, and may involve the temporary removal of other inhabitants out of the container. Unless the competing creature is significantly larger than the mantis shrimp, there's every chance that you're going to lose it instead. - Trigger fishes - Octopuses - Pistol shrimps - Sally Lightfoot Crabs - Hawk Fishes - Moray Eels with molar like teath such as the Snowflake or Zebra moray *These are not recommended methods for mantis shrimp removal. Some fool from SG creating trouble in RC
KingFish replied to Achilles Tang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Oh man...... cocky too well look out for someone (or L*S) with sudden surge of stock on that I suppose -
That Wedgee, I emphatise with you too..... However, I WENT ON AHEAD NONETHELESS...... A man needs a hobby, and perhaps to keep his sanity/his own little sanctuary. AT has his little room and me, my Chamber of Secrets.... I'm pretty certain you can handle the DIY. Just pick up ideas from some of the 'sump' threads and you'll be itching to try. My sump was customed together with my main and it costs me less than $100. The full works, pipes and pump will cost you, I'm doing that myself. I hardly think the my sand bed is enough, as I'm sure many will concur. The sand in my refugium will cover roughly 28'x10'x6', am not too sure myself.

I have a 3 ft tank too and I know how you feel.... If you have a sump, you can pile it on there, I'm thinking six inches in my sump/refugium and maybe just keep it at 3 in the main tank. Wonder if that works?
-
Hi guys, Just wondering if there might be a correlation between the amount of filter media to use in the sump and the tank capacity? Say assuming a 3ft tank which approximates to about 184 litres and a water turnover rate of say 10 times, skimming at more or less the same rate. How much of filter media would the sump need? I'm aware of the fact that aweekly maintenance of still essential. Correct me if I'm wrong, it seems to be like a balancing act and I wonder if there's a general thumbs rule to follow? Thanks.

That VW Beetle (VeeDub) has been featured in Volksworld, a VW enthusiast magazine. Pretty cool eh? My bro and bro-in-law are crazy over beetles. I have 59' and 70' at home, before that a 70', 71' and 73', going progressively backwards. Me, I'm going for a MG Triumph....hehe BTW, do you know the Beetle is engineered to never capsize, and all makes have been tested to be air and water tight. Mind you, they were making it more than half a century ago.... The most interesting fact so far, there's a label is there reading, "Do not close door with windows down'..... Reason: the pressure change will hurt your ears

Kind late but what the hell...... HAPPY HOLIDAYS.......... and a GREAT start to a new year.....
-
More so a Floodgate kel!!! But how say we all take it easy. Its the Holiday season.... so how say we all kick back in front of our tanks, ice cold beer in hand and let our thoughts drift away to that wonderful salty watery paradise........
-
Well, I suppose I'm quite lucky; like any other Internet junkie, I chanced upon this forum on a random search before I even started. I'm still soaking up information while purchasing the tanks and stuff. Did have to throw out the 2 footer with canister for a 3 footer with sump, but I suppose its all for the better. So no experience to share, butam you guys are kind enough to share, so keep them coming guys!!!!
-
I'm sure they might be grateful for some help, but don't let them know we'll probably harvest them for our tanks....

The REAL problem comes with shark feeding trips, if and when they eventually do associate humans with food.... we will have some mighty interesting scenes on CNN. Then people go on revenge hunt.....okie, no more shark fins "Artificial Intelligence is no match for genuine stupidity"
-
Pretty much what I do everyday, praying that Santa will bring me some LR....
-
Just saw an ad in the Singnet's Classifieds selling a 1 foot baby leopard shark for $10 Something about it getting too big for his tank but what was he thinking anyway....

I was advised not too, since tempered glass like windscreens shatter instead of cracking. Thick glass may be more forgiving.
