  1. Hi, any reefers have the experience with Clown Sweetlips? I like the combination of white spots with chocolate color skin... My desk research tells me a lot of information on their diet and general keeping but there isn't much info on keeping them in pairs. Although they are half clown and half sweetlips, I'm not sure if in pairs and if one is a bully, would they fight each other to death? Or is their courtship ritual (btn a male and female) a 'rough' journey with the male fish showing agreesive stances to woo the female?
  2. Good tips, Steven. For point 3, how do determine the right size for the tank so that we know how to use a over size skimmer.
  3. I'm getting from Patrick whom is selling at $6 per bottle and he deliver right to your door steps punctually (so far). On top of that, I paid a deposit of $60 for the bottles because they are recyclable and he would return the deposit when you return the bottles and terminate the account later on. Price inclusive of delivery costs. His contacts: Like I mentioned, I do not change water at all. Just top up every week. The salt does not evaporate, hence, no need to add water. Besides, the best way to confirm is the water salinitty check. To play safe, I do check the pH, NH4, NO2 and NO3 as well.
  4. Hi Keith, I use only bottled distilled water (19L) for water change without adding salt. The salinity is measured everytime during top up and kept within the desirable range. Previously used tap water, added salt and chromine removals but the algea growth was too fast. After switching to distilled water, the algae growth slowed down significantly.
  5. Sir, you have to be hardworking man. I cleaned my tank walls once every 2 weeks with 3M green wool...and I switched on my 2 x T5 for about 8hrs daily... Kindda strange, the lions somehow knew when it is house cleaning time and automatically hid in the 'cave'. Hence, I did not kenna stung so far...my whole arm went into the tank man... The tricky part is the sea urchins. I will move them to one corner while I clean the other...and they also somehow knew I'm cleaning and would stop climbing up the rocks and walls to avoid stinging their 'master'... Simply amazing!!!
  6. I know it is good practice to change the water once a month even when the live stock is not falling sick. I have started my 3ft tank back in June/July 2011, cycled for 2 months before introducing live stock. And I have not changed water at all, just do topping up. Everything has been smooth sailing with no diseases and the live stock is pretty happy... But, I do like to hear from fellow reefers on the risks involved (from experiences)... My live stock: 1 x Volitan, 1 x Spotted Lion, 1 x spiny lobster, 2 x purple reef lobsters, 4 x pom pom crabs, 2 x urchins, 1 x sandstar, 1 x nassarius snail, 2 x cardinal and 2 x damsels and 2 x chromis. Dun ask me how they can live together, but I guessed a well-fed lion is a happy and peaceful lion. About 80kg of live rocks.
  7. Sir, I do not train my lions with frozen food as I enjoy watching them ambushing their preys. However, when I first started, I did tried with frozen glass shrimps (I am keeping a tank of live glass shrimps and stored the dead ones in the freezer). But, only my spotty lion took the frozen dead ones. The volitan simply refused to eat dead ones. Maybe because I fed them once a day and they started to get picky... I used a long (45cm) metal clipper to pick the dead prawn (thawed of course) by its tail and started to wave it in front of the lion to simulate the prawn action. The lion will just execute its invincible 'suction' gongfu to bring the whole prawn into its belly...
  8. sir, u set very high stds for video sharing leh...i tot my 8 mega pixel phone cam was decent enough...how abt sharing a sample HD home reef footage fr ur archive to impress and tempt me... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  9. Finally, took a feeding video of my lions with my wifey's help... My link
  10. Sheng Siong does home delivery??? That's new to me.
  11. Thanks for this lobang, William. Cheapest quote so far!!!
  12. Hi, I need some help on Distilled water pricing with home delivery service. Could not find the latest 2011 pricing in this forum and hence decided to start this thread. My field study so far: 1) FairPrice Life brand - $0.57 per L (excludes delivery) 2) Refresh Water Trading http://www.rwater.com.sg/consumer.html - Minimum order quantity of 10 cartons (24 bottles) at $100 (excludes GST, includes delivery) - $0.55 per L
  13. Cool thread, Wilson! Enjoyed reading it. Will try to take some videos of the feeding. Not easy to do that alone as the lions really attack the live prey at lightning speeds. Right now, I have feeding them live glass shrimps to keep their predatory instincts and they loved it!
  14. Wanted to share my Lions experience via my blog: http://funatfishing.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-volitany-spotty-lions.html
  15. Hi, I am looking for Grass Shrimps and exploring to breed them for the usage as live bait for my Volitan and Spotted-Fin Lion fishes. Appreciate if someone: 1) Currently also breeds grass shrimps and willing to sell; or 2) Knows any marine shops selling them Many thanks.
  16. Im keen. let me know if there are any left. I can collect them this afternoon.
  17. Thanks for the advice, iskay. Do you mean I shd refer to the 'FOWLR' discussion topic?
  18. Thanks, Kira76. Was not observant enough...
  19. Thanks for all the valuable advices and 'scoldings'. I guessed my 1st step was wrong to use live fish for the cycling. Everyone makes mistake somehow and I will learn from this experience.
  20. Hi, Im keen. Can you give me your hp again? number provided only 7 digits.
  21. Thanks for the advice, Terryz. Noted on the more humane method and would definitely adopt for future ANN cycle. Will also introduce the right way for other first timers too.
  22. I would like to apologise to those whom were upset by my actions. I admit that my research was not enough, but I did recall that I read somewhere in the internet that one of the methods for tank cycling is to use some hardy fishes. of course, this method is cruel.
  23. Actually, I'm not going to do a reef tank. I have no interests in reef yet. My idea was to condition the tank first and then go for some lion fish.
  24. Thanks for the replies, FuEL and vinccc2009, that's what I thought too... Must be patient and build a solid foundation.
