LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in DIY Forum
These few days weather so cool. Only can test on warm weather. I like The reflective shield. stylo. The foam more porous as compare to normal air-con foam. -
Think sps tank, flow is strong. Pipefish not strong to tahan flow. Maybe it just swim at areas where lower flow. Also depends individual fish character is those garang type.

Crystal glass vs starphire glass
LittleBurger replied to mengyang_neo's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Thks to yr thread & bros who chip in their knowledge. I know what to look out for and paying the "reasonable" price for it. -
Anyone ever did a ca,kh & mg test on NSW? I had a card from tropic marin nong nong time ago. Optimal CA=400-420, KH=7-10, Mg=1200-1350. I buy my NSW frm CF. Maybe it's time I do a test and put the results here. Am thinking if NSW's CA,KH & Mg is low, then every water change will the water parameters drop too much. Then will need to ramp them up by higher vol dosing. As compare to salt mix, think should be more stable.

Crystal glass vs starphire glass
LittleBurger replied to mengyang_neo's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I think it depends on the vendor whether honest to tell customers if using china made or others. So long the vendor don't pass off china crystal glass as "ang mo" crystal glass, I'm ok with them telling the truth, just dun smoke. If I find out later..... I'll provide free ads for the company. Lots of stuff now cheena made. So sometimes very very difficult to scrutinize them. My opinion is so long it is gd quality, country of origin is not an issue. So far I've searched & found that asahi is 2nd rated glass as compared to low iron glass. I know starphire glass is a brand name for low iron from the web.... So visually, can one differentiate asahi glass & low iron glass, maybe from the sides, low iron looks clearer? Thanks! -
Types of glass for aquarium
LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
From looking at the side of the glass, does asahi & low iron glass looks the same, transparent? -
Need advice on the types of glass used for aquarium. I know the most sought after is low iron glass. Is there also many grades of low iron glass? What is asahi glass? So is asahi the same as low iron glass or low iron glass is better?

Anyone has experience on ehiem compact+ pumps(3000, 5000 model) ? They r Higher flow n slightly lower power consumption but lower head as compared to the universal model. Had search web n think the compact plus not really made by ehiem. So far read tat universal better than compact plus based on primarily head pressure as most pple t off to chiller or fr. Seems most pple prefer universal model. Compact plus 3000 maxflow at 3000lph at 68w if not wrong. All compact head pressure at 3m.

My sump designs & questions
LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I'm thinking of putting a filter sock(Madpetz) under drain 2. Not sure how much it can stop how much detrius. So right now the water flow in your sump is from compartment 1 to 3 and 2 to 3, but not 1 to 2? I'm planning to use the mud or soil for the refugium(similar to one of the tank at Madpetz). -
My sump designs & questions
LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
it will be 3x3x2 with external overflow. I follow the calculators on reefcentral n read that should get 10x tank water cycling rate n arrive at using 2 x 1262. So u forsee some problems? -
For 1st design, the skimmer & Fr are in same compartment. For 2nd design, they are separated. The idea is to have the untreated water get to skimmer first then some untreated & treated water frm skimmer will go to the FR compartment? Is this a better design or just "extra"? For size of return pump compartment, is there a calculation for it? Cos with 2 return pumps, the water get pump out faster and it may run dry. Pls give me some pointers. Thanks.

Position of overflow box
LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I'm plannin for a 3x3x2 rimless with external overflow. cabinet maybe 4 or 4.5ft. 4 inch DSB. Return opening will be about 4.5inch above the DSB. So return will be about 8.5inch from bottom. The 90deg return was initially on my mind but most pple strongly advise not to. So to have best of both worlds, I suppose I can reduce the height of the return line(dun need go so high up then down, about half the height of tank then come down and exit to main tank) and drilled a small hole at the return? This way I might have lesser head loss and at most half of main tank water will drain to sump? So if my return pipe goes to half of my tank height(12inch) and bends downwards to tank height of 8.5inch and exit to main tank. I drill a hole at about 12inch point. So for rimless normally pple make the overflow about 4inches lower than the top of tank? So that when wavemaker turns on, the water will not splash over? So to calculate my estimated sump vol, I should take 12inch(which is where the hole drilled at the return line at 12inch) minus 4inch(since the top 4 inch of tank is "empty" = 8inch of water. So I just use 36inch x 36inch x 8inch = 44.9gal for my sump? Sorry for the long long story... Thanks!! -
Position of overflow box
LittleBurger replied to LittleBurger's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Based on both pics, plan to have the return pipe within the overflow box. A hole is cut on the tank n return pipe opening is glued to the hole. So i just need to drill a small hole at the top, below the main tank water level to break the siphon? Under normal operation, water will come out frm this hole right? Actually I wan to create a tank as " clean " look as possible. But im afraid putting a vortech in a box might reduce its efficiency. I probably need to cut a big hole for the vortech which in turn becomes more " prominent". So not going to do the boxup of cortex anymore. -

Back flow valve means check valve? im going abt 4 inch dsb. So yr underflow design is a long rectangular shape? A tank maker told me can only drill circle shape not rect shape. Is yr underflow design same as my drawing? I can't find a design on web for reference. Thks!
