Do note that yumas and shrooms can sometimes be just as tempremental as zoas

  4. upz for your healthy zoas, your zoas opened the instant i put them in my tank.
  5. yup, how can u expect your tank to be cycled so fast. Even for a 3ft thats alot of fish u are adding so early. There are many good carbon that arent too expensive like rowa carbon, chemipure. Whats gonna happen to these fishes when u introduce your lionfish?
  6. i dont think so, i dont really like buying stuff apart from livestock from jireh. if u using the jbj tank or the colourful nano cube from aquamarin then u can convert part of the AIO sump into a refugium using turtle weed, caulerpa or cheato. for light, use a submersible arcadia led that u can get from NA or aquamarin. If its not an Aio u can convert a hob filter or hob breeding box into a refugium
  7. i change my water once every 2-3 months. usually 25%. Zoas are one of the easiest corals to keep.
  8. Yup by giving us an idea of your budget, we'll help u plan it out I dont understand why some must insult just to tell him that its not realistic to get a 6ft. He has some experience so i belief that his budget has been thought through. This guy obviously isnt a leech, ive met him and hes a student. LOL
  9. syring is just to dose the correct amount. I also use the syringe for dosing additives. i have two tanks so i pour out roughly the correct amount into a measuring cup then use the syring to draw up the right amount to dose for both tanks and the remainder i pour back. reduces wastage and more accurate. Quite tedious though.
  10. now THATS the right attitude. Yeah, most reefers always have one or two spares lying around. But its actually better if u get it yourself.
  11. yeah, its expensive and for students sometimes u have to starve for weeks to save up. U must have the will lah...n the attitude.
  12. i very hard working, maunual dosing using a syringe
  13. Its your call. Or why not get a big AIO like the red sea max 250? It should add up to about 3-4.5k. Its prob within your budget if u are planning for a 6ft. u can still keep fairly big fish in there like tangs and angels.
  14. yes i do dose daily, in the span of a month to a half, my green paly frag grew from 2 polyp to 4polyp. LOL
  15. i dont use mh but i have a chiller, that uses up quite alot of electricity.
  16. frankly the best setup for starters is just a simple 2 feet. Since u have budgetted for a 6ft u prob have sufficient funds to start a 2ft with decent equip. U can still keep a tang, an angel and other fishes. A sump is also optional for a 2ft. But all this is all dependant on your budget. a marine tank is not just a one time investment, so budget properly.
  17. U got me wrong, Im not encouraging him to get a 6ft tank. i managed to conivince him to get a smaller one by the way. The first thing is budget, actually, unless u are nano reefer, theres no way u can afford a 6ft tank. hes also more into fish so hes not doing a reef which will help reduce the overall cost like the lights and the additives. U dont need the best skimmer or filter but just one that fits the tank requirements. ANd for the lights, a simple t5 2 bulb fixture is more than enough for a fowlr.
  18. yeah,a big tank is definitely not cheap. Theres someone giving away a 3feet tank. I saved up for my first tank...for a year. For starters,2feet easier to manage...since u want mostly fish, why not get a 3-4ft fowlr. Fowlr are cheaper and easier, less demanding in many ways too.
  19. umm, even i dont know how to start one. And i think as a starter you shouldnt need one since you shouldnt start on sps so fast. The leds u need, need to be of at least 1watt. If you are on a budget, get t5 or some cheap fixture, when u gain more experience feel free to try this.
  20. Thats true, if u want a budget tank, why not try something smaller? maybe an iq5? LOL. $30 is actually quite cheap compared to the horros you will face, why not get your parents to help you out. I was in your situation once so i just saved for almost a year...that gave me bout $400. its enough to start a simple tank, nothing fancy. that was 2 years back when i was in primary school, i only had like $2 a day.
  21. i just label it as nature and leave it. I once had a tunicate on my lr. Seriously, not a very colourful one, just brown and some blue.
  22. What do people have against student reefers asking for stuff to make life easier for themself? Its not begging.

Think one must be realistic and pursuit something within ones ability. A dream is good to have and one must be down to earth to strive for it. We can give equipment and next thing will be livestock and corals. Moreover, whether one is worth the giving is still in question. Many times, one can take ppl empathy for granted and later profit from it and giver will start complaining. This hobby is not just the start up but sustaining it and commitment.

Yes, i agree with solo. The student reefers is just asking for spare equipment or tanks that the giver does not need. One need not use harsh or insulting words to tell him the reefer that getting a 6ft tank is a silly idea. Its his choice whether or not he wants to buy the tank, we can advise him against it but what more can we do? Thats why after buying the equip and tank, the reefer should have sufficient spare cash in case of things he did not consider. I mean how many of us actually budge...

  23. Ultraman. Hes a student and a newbie. He doesnt have money, why not try to be more undertsnading and make things easier for him. I was like him once, and i was only 12 back then! but look where i am now man. There are many things to consider and many costs that he havent thought about but still he just started try to be more understanding. So why not help a student by giving him stuff that you dont need? extra stuff thats just lying around collecting dust
