How long to vinegar bath jebao wavemaker
kohanson replied to DottyClown's topic in General Reefkeeping_
My jebao wp25 have been running since the day i started my nano tank in nov 2013. It has been running on w1 s3 since the first day and I usually take it out for cleaning every 2-3 months and oil it with vaseline at the shaft. Still going strong till today, no regrets and bought a jebao RW-8 in Sep 2015 to run both concurrently for my 3.5ft tank. -
thanks for the suggestion! To add on, I also use vaseline to coat on the shaft for my wavemaker, return pump and skimmer pump everytime i clean them. Have been doing it for many years.

Anyone Using Red Sea Coral Pro Sea Salt???
kohanson replied to Macateer's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I usually fill up a pail with water. Then pour in 2 cups of RSCP and use my glass cleaner stick to stir the water. The salt residue will go to the center bottom of the pail and you need to make sure that the salt are fully dissolved. I will stir for around 10 minutes and add it into my sump directly. The residue will dissolve in my sump if it is not stirred properly. -
Dottybacks are very territorial. I used to have the bicolour dottyback and it chased every single fish that goes near him. But my previous dottyback had not killed my cleaner shrimp before.

Chaeto in Refugium Losing their Green

Try reducing your lighting period to 8 hours and monitor or shift it higher. The lighting period could be too long for your tank. What type of water are you using?

Any advise to improve my nano reef tank?
kohanson replied to Denniszz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
You might also want to add in common mushroom corals as they are easy to keep and can withstand wider parameter changes. -
you can read up from here http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Protein_skimmer on protein skimmers. you may want to look at the affordable protein skimmers from bubble magus. http://deaquatic.com/product-category/bubble-magus/ they do have dimensions available for you to choose.

Yes the cleaner shrimp is one of the must have shrimp for reef keepers. Nice and active shrimps that will clean my fingers when i put my hand into the tank to shift my corals. However they get really excited when you throw in some food and will walk over your corals and will cause them to close up for awhile. Ah beng at pasir ris do sell or the shop beside ah beng also sell.

For me is live rock, substrate then water. Took me the whole day to scape and then epoxy. Actually not whole day lah, just scape and sit down one side and look if all angles look ok as mine is 3 side viewable. After live rock epoxy dried, i add in substrate as I want to make sure my sand shifting snails and goby do not shift my rocks and the rocks sit at the bottom of the tank. If the rocks shift, they might topple and cause damage to the glass or kill the fishes. I added the water over the rocks to ensure the waterdo not stir up the substrate too much.

what lights are you using? Might need more blue to bring out the colours. My settings are 40% white and 55% blue.

yeah, my coral banded shrimp is now in my sump. Have killed my purple firefish and stripped it down to bones.
-
yes! Definitely ok, as long as they are swaying with the water and not stiff or contracted all the time, they are ok. If you can see the purple mat extending out which is in lighter colour, it means they are growing.

Could be majano anemone but cant see clearly.

kohanson replied to Denniszz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Looks good but the anemone might be too big for your tank. The damsel is nice but is aggresive and will guard its area. Any fish that goes near him will be chase away. Not easy to remove, I only manage to catch him previously when upgrading to a larger tank. If the yellow fish behind is a dottyback, it will be as aggressive as the damselfish. -
Anyone have chaeto available in the east or Sengkang area?

Brown Algae growing on sand !!
kohanson replied to AppleholicKen's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
yes you are correct. My algae blenny will only eat up algae on the rocks and have never eat the algae on the sandbed. -
Chaeto in Refugium Losing their Green
kohanson replied to Macateer's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Yes! My refugium area is around 1ft I guess. I tried using a sponge to prevent the flow of the cheato to the pump but it became a chore to remove the cheato from the sponge. So I guess I will try again when my tank is more mature. Just want to breed some copepods in the sump. -
Rowaphos & Biosphere still available in market?
kohanson replied to DottyClown's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Iwarna have? I used to buy from them. I also saw it at Ng couple at pasir ris about a month ago. -
Ensure you have an oversize skimmer, wave maker to ensure no dead spots, and lower lighting period and intensity. If using tap water, then diatoms will continue to grow. You can get turbo snails to clean up the diatoms. Tuxedo urchins can clean deeper and make your rocks white but they will eat into your tank silicon if there are algae growing there. I also recommend nassarius snails as they will dig into your sand and come out when there are food, thus making your sand looks cleaner.

How do you guys wash your filter socks?
kohanson replied to josephwzr's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I am currently using the double layer filter sock from Madpetz. The external is nylon and the internal is like cotton. The internal cotton will usually overflow after a week. I have 2 sets of the same filter and I usually will change both filters once every 2 weeks. I will just wash them with tap water and dry in the sun for a few days. -
Is Caribsea south sea base rock easy to work with?
kohanson replied to argonmt's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
For my caribsea Life rock, I add them directly to the tank without washing as I scaped the rocks without water and epoxied the rocks together in the tank without water. However, the tank turn slightly cloudy while adding in water, could be due to the live sand.
