  1. I am more inclined to go for option 3. But if u are intending to use for a 4 x 1.5 x 2 tank, i'm not sure where u can find such a huge hob filter that will provide adequate filtration. You can use the first two options, but where u going to put ur bio media? In marine tank, sponge and pump filters get clogged up fast, u must be prepared to change it often. An internal pump filter will look uglier than a canister if u ask me.
  2. A wave maker will be necessary in your case since u are not intending to use a return pump or powerhead. In marine tank, u need a good flow of water continuously. Yes, u may use your FW bio media. I don't see a problem with that. Many will consider using marine bio media and how its classified, i have no idea. But to me, its no difference. i.e Biohomme, works for both fw and sw What u read is true. The main idea of having a good wave maker is so that water can continuously be moved around and into the skimmer for the waste/organics to be skimmed out effectively. U want to prevent any waste (detritus) from settling onto the base of the tank or on the rocks which will in turn increase the nutrient in your tank
  3. Very nice bonsai project Hope it turns out well for u. What kind of overflow system are u using?
  4. Yes, if its minimal stocking, than a skimmer alone should do the trick. But make sure u have a filter or some sort running, be it hang on board or canister. Your main filtration will need to be able to deal with the high waste from your feeding and fish poo. Adequate bacteria housing / live rock / sand should be used to increase the surface area for bacteria growth. As for 10mm glass, correct me if im wrong senior reefers. But 10mm should be enough to support the tank.
  5. Personally i feel the only problem u can get with carbon is over using more than the recommended amount. Its not as dangerous as biopellets though. And yes, just rinse the carbon and can put direct into the tank. If u follow the recommended amount, most likely u need to replace only once a month
  6. Yes u can run without a sump. Firstly, u must know the reason for having a sump, most people have a sump as it increases your overall water volume (increased stability), placement of equipments such as in sump skimmers, reactors, filter socks/wool and a refugium for nutrient export/ safe haven for beneficial critters. Safe to say if u dont need a refugium, and u have a place for your skimmer, u will be fine without a sump setup.
  7. Excellent and detailed sharing bro khiann. I believe many sps reefers can benefit from this article u wrote.
  8. Wah swee swee tank bro! I like how your monti grow out
  9. Bro! U should add rain bars!!!!!! Simulate rain as well! ahahahha. use a return pump and attach rain bars to the top. Hehehehe
  10. Yup, just an indication that its growing. Mine has shed its shell multiple times over past few months.
  11. Agreed. But if your asking for personal viewing pleasure in the night. Than u can buy a single moonlight for the tank if you dont want to startle ur livestocks. Besides that, as bro reddevils has mentioned, your fish will be fine without light at night, no stress. dont worry In fact, i read somewhere that some livestock prefer the dark after a whole day of light blasted. Personally, i removed my moonlights, wasn't serving any purpose.
  12. I agree bro, its been super hot off late. My chiller is kicking in more than usual as well. Do let me know if decide to bring your chiller down to bioplast for any servicing, I'm keen to know if the hailea will require any top up or servicing. I read somewhere that the only maintenance others do is just to clean the air intake. Thanks
  13. Keep which u enjoy looking at the most. If its not for aesthetic purpose, more for utility. I did keep the kole and yellow tang. Kole tangs do great job with film algae. The yellow tang will take care of the other algaes.
  14. For Ca either change water or let it reduce by itself thats the only choice u got. As for PH, read this article. the solutions are given at the end: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-09/rhf/index.php
  15. Hey guys, So I'll be starting a new tank soon, and most importantly, I don't want to make newbie mistakes. My most important question right now is how to completely ensure the tank is free from aiptasia. I will be using dry rocks, sunbaked for at least 2 weeks. So i understand and have read through many suggestions. 1. Bleach Rocks (risk having left over bleach absorb within rock, not natural) 2. Boiling Rocks (a dangerous method, as i read a post on rc about toxic gases being released) 3. Keeping Rocks in the dark (apitasia are known to survive well and even multiply since they dont require light to survive) 4. Hyposalinity Rocks (many reefers still encountered apitasia after the process, doesnt work) 5. Fresh water Soaking Rocks (Someone posted in rc he tried this, and still had aiptasia, might be due to other sources of rocks, not confirm) 6. Using H2o2 (same as bleaching??) 7. Cooking rocks (This is mainly to remove nutrients within rock itself, unsure if its actually used for the purpose of aiptasia eradication) So yes, I've done my fair bit of research, but every method has a few set backs, and doesn't give a good confidence for eradication. Can any experienced reefers share what method they use when starting a new tank to ensure chance of aiptasia is kept to its absolute minimum? Is sun drying the rocks for 2 weeks followed by a freshwater soak sufficient, or am i being too paranoid? Thanks, and i really hope to get some inputs.
  16. Yes you can mix tangs with angels. But first, how big is your tank? If its small, you may be limited to only dwarf angelfishes. Cheers.
  17. That fu manchu lion is absolutely stunning. When it grows, it will look even better!
  18. Hi arron, welcome to the forum. All the answer u are seeking for can be found on the front page of this website (http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php) , like: Faq for starting up a marine tank, how to keep your aquarium cool on a hot day, tank cycling 101 and many other helpful articles. Give it a read through, and if you are still unsure of certain points, we be able to point you in the right direction. For a nano, the dymax iq5 is a good beginner tank to start. But due to its volume and size, you can afford to only keep a few fishes, preferably only 1 or 2. Unlike freshwater, in marine, we rely on live rocks and live sand for bacteria growth. Happy reefing.
  19. Agreed. My yellow tang is now the boss of my tank, no other fish can be added. Lol
  20. Wow bro, very nice growth of gsp on the wall. Im hoping to get the same results, just pasted a few on my tank wall. Unfortunately, not sure if it consumes calcium n carbonate. My guess would be yes, but in a very small negligible amount as it doesn't have a hard skeleton structure unlike sps. Any pros can advise, would like to know as well. Cheers!
