triton: miracle or snake oil?
tofubox replied to christan1959's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
While i wouldn't necessarily say that its snake oil, as it indeed does replenish depleted trace elements in the tank by dosing means. I also wouldn't consider this a miracle, its basically pure water chemistry and science. The question really is does it work and is it a beneficial way of maintaining the health of the inhabitants? My take on the system is: Use it only if u are willing to do your water test and that means sending ur water samples for regular water test. Base on what i've read so far on the triton method, it doesn't differ much from a water change...basically in a water change, u use synthetic salt + H2o. The synthetic salt in any salt brand mix contains the elements also found in triton's 102 essential elements list. H20 remains as h20. So really, there is not much difference. Problem comes in when u have no idea what is being consumed faster or slower and than dosing as necessary with the triton method. Only way to figure that is to send ur water samples for testing, and than calculating the amount of trace base elements to dose. End of day: you be dosing blindly if u dont send ur water for tests. Sure, maybe u can stabilize the system after a couple of triton lab test to determine the dosage requirements. But will u stop adding new corals, or will ur corals stop growing? Taken off the triton website: Step 3 – Individual supplementary care Depending on the number, size and composition of animals in the tank, higher consumption of boron, lithium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, fluoride or other materials may occur. TRITON offers these elements for supplementary dosage in the product series 'Trace Base'. How are individual requirements determined? Two water tests with an interval of 30 days are conducted in order to establish precise monthly consumption and determine what substances may be missing. It is possible to accurately calculate consumption from the difference of the concentration of substances of each individual element and to add the element, if necessary Please please do correct me if i've made a mistake and misunderstood the system. I would love to learn more about triton too. -
Beautiful DRY ROCKS! In Singapore?
tofubox replied to magical26's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Hi bro, the rocks ain't actually cultivated. But more like painting a piece of calcium carbonate dry rock and than giving it a spot bacteria. It is definitely a very good alternative compared to getting live rocks, killing it, than bleaching, soaking, cooking etc etc to get it clean. U are basically starting off with the end stage of what most people do to liverocks for a new tank, but save on the hassle of the curing process. Up till now, we didn't have the luxury like reefers in the US who were able to get pukani dry rocks or marco reef rocks. The recent aquaroche and now the caribsea Life rocks are the newer options for us. Heres a better understanding. -
62 Lim Chu Kang farms affected by change in land use
tofubox replied to phuakl's topic in General Reefkeeping_
I personally enjoy going to farms more than going orchard road. Not just marine farms, but like any cultivation farms, vegetable farm, crocodile farms, frog farms, Plant nurseries (Orchid, bonsai, etc etc), and so many more others! If my kids in the future cant get to see these, I'll feel sad for them man. -

Battling Acropora Eating Flat Worm ( AEFW )
tofubox replied to Harlequinmania's topic in SPS and Advanced Reefkeepers Forum
Sad but true, its only when u are really affected or assume to be affected that u really become serious over AEFW. Usually people don't really bother, but once u get hit with it....boy...its gonna be a nightmare for u and ur tank. Strongly advise those purchasing new acropora sps to pay attention to the coral, do ur dips and necessary precautions. -
berry berry niceeee!
