if your pump is generating too much heat maybe use a hang on filter instead, can put some filter media to boost your filter system too.

as long as they are blowing across the surface of the fan, i remember buying a 24 dollar fan from Clementi fish shops that was rated for a tank about 100 litres, it brought my 20 gallon tank from 29 to 27. hopefully would work for you.

If you current cooling fan doesn't bring down the temperature, you could get a bigger fan, maybe get a fan rated for a tank way bigger than your current one, it is definitely better than no fan.

Hi guys, i've been doing some research on how to keep frogfish, and I notice people recommend 20 gallon tanks for these guys, I'm planning to make FOWLR tank, that uses a HOB or top filter with just one frog fish in the tank. I was thinking isn't 20 gallon a little too big if i just want to keep one frog fish, anyone who has ever had experience keeping these guys care to chip in? and also offer any tips that might be useful.

Personally I like small tanks and find them easier to manage. Large tanks tend to need a lot of equipment and more things can go wrong. Plus small is cheaper too. There's this person overseas called brandon429 keeps a pico tank that's quite amazing and easy maintenance. Can go Google his name.

yes it is normal. and water changes are necessary. Acropora usually not recommended until your tank is about 6 months old.

It's not possible to open my windows all the time because when I leave the house I have to close the windows or rain gets in. I'm thinking of closing the room off instead when I'm not around to keep whatever is doing this out. the tanks look ok, for now but can see the live stock stressed, some died. I worried the bacteria in the tank might be greatly reduced so ill be dosing bacteria for the next two weeks If anything happens I'll update this thread

hi i have a problem about my tanks that keep crashing. this is what happens, protein skimmer overactivate similar to epoxy effect, clear skimmate and over flows. funky smelling water, live stock keep dying or are in great distress until the protein skimmer is done overactivating. and i guess whatever is causing it is skimmed out. these crashes have happened to both of my tanks numerous times, and can take from 1 week to 9 months to occur. i find this weird because, in the beginning i could have attributed these tank crashes to poor husbandry skills, but i have improved them alot since i was a newbie and it still happens, some of the examples of what i mean by improvements are, stocking my tanks extremely lightly, like having a fishless 25 gallons tank. i hardly keep fish. i wait a month(s) between addition of live stocks, using only RO/DI water, weekly water changes, testing my water parameters like nitrates, PH and alkalinity to make sure everything is constant and if need be adjust it slowly. i can be having a very consistent maintenance schedule for months or weeks at a time and then boom it happens. what's even weirder is that sometimes one tank crashes but the other's ok, or sometimes at the same time. AND there was once i had a dish of water in the same room as my tank and that dish of water became cloudy and funky smelling as well! FAQ about what people suggest to me it is Q: maybe its cause your temperature fluctuates, or you use tap water, A: i use a chiller and RO/DI, my temperature is at 26 degress. and my RO/DI TDS reading is 0, and i test it every few days. Q: maybe it could be your PH levels fluctuating? A: i keep my alkalinity pretty high, at 4 to 4.5 meq/l, and the crashes have happened during the day before where PH isn't supposed to drop. Q: could it be chemicals sprayed in the air? A: if it was, i'm not sure what chemical it could be that it can be skimmed out, and also, after its skimmed out, life seems to continue in the tank. so i would kinda think that it is more biological in nature. Q: you stocked your tank too quickly? A: i sometimes have nothing in there but live rock and a few hermits that i add over the course of a month. or sometimes my tanks have nothing at all except for live rock. also that wouldn't explain why a dish of water could become cloudy. maybe that dish of water was a one time thing, but it really makes me think..... Q: have you tried starting totally anew? with all new rocks, water and sand? A: yes. but to no avail. Thanks for reading, i'm really at my wits end, so any suggestions would be helpful.

<p> </p> that part about the salt mix having higher ca mg and kh is the most probable i think, because red sea coral pro does have elevated levels of those. i mean it would be kinda weird asking you to mix for only 4 hours, when the moment you add it in your tank its going to be mixing for much longer than 4 hours.

Update What happened after my last post Ok so thing that happened after my last post from very long ago, was that there was a bacterial bloom that kinda wiped the tank. after doing much reflection and research i concluded it was because i was using tap water all along, and usually i changed water once a week, but for whatever reason i changed it twice consecutively and i guess the tank couldn't handle the change in water chemistry further more tap water to me, is like playing russian roulette cause you never know when the water companies might suddenly add more of one thing or the other. So feeling discouraged i passed it on to my father. who did some kinda experiment on his own, instead of placing the tank indoors, he placed it outdoors in the sun, using natural sun light as a light source. furthermore no chiller or fan was used. Of course i'm not saying chillers are useless, but i believe it depends on what you keep, and more importantly its more about fluctuation. i believe a huge part of why the tank survived was because of the use of RO/DI water from then on and allowing the system to stabilize. in other words, once you set up a tank a certain way, just let it run and avoid adding anything to it. Currently so after awhile my father kinda gave up on the tank too because it was overrun with aiptasia and it killed some LPS he put in. So i offered to put it back into my room. so the first thing i did was fix the aiptasia problem, i added 3 peppermint shrimps and used an aiptasia killer. and the results were good. Equipment my dad used Dolphin HOB filter with surface skimmer, the same one a year ago. A airstone skimmer Equipment i'm using same as above, plus the same T5 lighting from a year ago. Livestock in keeping with my theme of invertebrates and keeping the eco system lightly stocked. 3 halloween hermit crabs, 2 red leg hermits, and 3 peppermint shrimp. and lots of caulerpa algae. I'll talk more about my maintenance next time. That's all, thanks for reading.

well, you could just use one powerhead that goes through the FR first, followed by the chiller.

copepods are everywhere. erm you can just google copepods, they're just white tiny ant like creatures that crawl on your rock and glass. they feed detritus or algae mostly. beneficial in most cases.
