The last potteri just died this morning. It was eating 2 days ago, but yesterday it stopped eating. I was advised to acquire stable specimen from hobbyist or LFS which have kept these for at least 3 weeks and are eating. Anyone has information where I could get them?

Anything the hobbyist can do to improve the chances? Any reliable source for us to acquire these beauties?

Does anyone have success with them? care to share your experience. I bought 3. ( not together) First one died on me on the first day of QT The 2nd one died 2 days after a freshwater dip The 3rd one seem to be having difficulty. Water Parameters in QT: pH: 8.1 SG: 1.0253 Temp: 26 - 27.2 C Ammonia - non detectable Nitrates - non detectable (both using salifret testkit) Dead Fish shows no visible or obvious signs of breaks in scales/ white spots etc Have been hearing from the internet it boils down to their collection methods, usually juiced, but it's kinda weird that the other fishes that I acquire from the same shipment like the flame angels and barletts are doing well and last. Maybe I am doing something wrong? Can someone englighten me?

Which Tang is hardest to feed?
puppet replied to akahoshi's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
I got a pair of fat and healthy Naso tangs from IWarna's Philipines shipment. Didn't eat for 5 days. I tried red bamboo, TLF seaweed, brine shrimp, macroalgae, Henry's, no response at all. It was also showing some signs of ich. Was kinda worried, but alas, I saw them pecking on the LR and tried to feed some seaweed, they were very shy at first but eventually ate them. Maybe the PBT you got was like mine, shy and maybe takes a longer time to adapt Cheers and hang in there! -
OMG! Look at these hybrids and rare fishes!

All of these are capable to change their sex yeah? -
Sun coral also respond to flow. In nature, food is brought to them through the changes in tide movement. I have been feeding my suns for months, but some of them just does not respond until I changed the position of my wavemakers, flow initiate a response in them. hope it helps

There has been talk about a full spectrum KR93 Ecolamps jointly developed by blue harbor and Ecolamps, http://reefbuilders.com/2011/09/22/full-spectrum-kr93-ecolamps-led/ heard that Dr Sanjay is going to publish a new finding on the newer range of LED in the market, i think Radion, Orphek and the newer Ecolamp might be in it. Might be good to wait a while

When hobbyist visit LFS,or any consumer visiting any retail shops there are many criteria in which we look at, as being discussed in this thread 1) Pricing 2) Variety While those are very important to hobbyists, it is heartening to know that Uncle Jon also mentioned other important aspects like the knowledge of the owner in regards to livestock, or even the friendly atmosphere. I guess the problems come when we just look at pricing to decide which are the better LFS. As consumers we only see the retail price, we compare 2 LFS selling similar livestock and sometimes jump into conclusion that LFS which sells more expensive is exploiting hobbyists. Though there might be some truth, but it could also be due to other possible reasons like overhead costs, origin of livestock, quarantine measures taken prior to sale. I think that is why some of us shy away from comparing prices as these comments might be subjective and also bearing in mind that some of these LFS are sponsors of the forum. Also like what digiman said, some of us have our favorite LFS regardless of price. Personally, I enjoy visiting LFS with friendly people and knowledgeable people, so that even when fishes are very affordable, the LFS owner would still find out more about my system and tell me straight in the face that the fish i am about to purchase destined for doom with me and would do better in a more prepared system.

How many times do you feed your fishes daily?
puppet replied to pokmingsheng's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Brine Shrimp are good way to tempt finicky fishes to start feeding. I have used this method to encourage fishes who do not respond to frozen/ prepared food initially to get them starting and slowly train them to take alternate sources of food. Some reputable LFS do sell Brine Shrimp which are pre-enriched or gut loaded, these can be very good. We can also gut load the brine shrimp before feeding to the fishes, this could be done through adding phytoplankton etc and adding a bubbling airstone perhaps an hour or 2 prior to feeding. But I think what Oprime is trying to share is that Brine shrimp in itself really as very little nutrition value. As for not changing water, whether it could be done really depends on the rationale of why we perform water changes. 1) remove unwanted compounds 2) replenish useful compounds 1) Could there be other methods of removal of undesirable compounds, I think there are plenty like skimmer, FR, ATS, Denitrator, K1 media, biopellets, macroalgae in refugium, DSB, activated carbon and the list simply goes on. The question is whether the compounds removed through water change, are they the same as the above mentioned methods, if they really are, then we answered one aspect of the usefulness of water changes. But this can't really be verified unless someone does some lab test. 2) What is in NSW or prepared saltwater that replenishes what was lost in a closed aquarium? Could these compounds be added in through other methods like dosing? Again tests need to be done to first identify these important compounds and then a source other than water changes sought out. But I think there are quite a number of literature on the net in regards to this. Well at the end of the day, if we invest in a lot of equipment to ensure the quality of the water for our LS, and changing water is one more layer of protection for them, then why not? PS: I have yet to change my water for a long time, it all voice down personally for me to this, I am a lazy bum. If only I could translate the time and effort from relocating corals to changing water -
I remembered once that Lemon reacted passionately to one of my post. I think it was about how he felt the community here could be more appreciative of other fishes as compared to the usual fishes that everyone were familar with. I was a bit taken aback initially. But as I spend time reading through the forums, I realised that Lemon was someone who is very passionate about fishes and shared much information with the community. I think the community does look to him for advice. In fact, after the incident, I actually Pmed Lemon to ask about how to get difficult fishes to start feeding as I acquired a pair of Ostracion Meleagris. He was very patient and shared with me how I could get things started, he also referred me to his friend who had prior experience with Ostracion Meleagris. And today, I think I have read almost all his write-ups about reefsafe butterfly, dwarf angels and use them as a guide for my purchases. So for me, I think Lemon can be very engaged with an issue or discussion but never with the person. As for Mr Johan, Wow, what can I say?!?!! It's really a pleasure to "meet" the person who supplies Junkai with those fishes. I am your faithful supporter here, I remembered in one of your first shipment to IWarna, I purchased the ghost pipefish and Ostracion solorensis (female). And in your latest shipment, I bought ALL your cardinal crown of thorns (was waiting for it for so long) and your banded possum, all of which are under quarantine. I heard Junkai was supposed to accquire the Ostracion Meleagris pair from you, but you did not shipped them as you felt that they were not ready. Talk about being a responsible exporter! (hmmm, come to think of it, I am not sure if the Ostracion Meleagris was suppose to come from you, too many fishes I wanted, might have mix them up) Would you have small size Ostracion Meleagris? I find it really hard to coax them to eat, and usually they just waste away Apologies for diluting this thread! But thanks Lemon for your relentless passion! And thanks Johan for your equally relentless awesome stock of fishes! God bless
