HELP!!! Did I just buy a KILLER BLENNY???
michaeltanyk replied to michaeltanyk's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
no you're not diluting the thread. Damsels are easy fish to keep. This blenny like quite difficult, doesn't really eat food unless it crosses within 1 inch of his path, usually blennies are not like this. As for the pics, the trick is the right lens. I've been photographing small creatures for long time, including hamsters etc. some for SPCA etc. I find a 60mm macro on a APS size sensor camera ideal for an aquarium below 2 feet breadth. So I should take better pics really given the time I spend on photography, but unfortunately no talent! -

LOL problem is always getting him outta the display tank.... As for the photo the lens is the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM .... pretty much a small animal lens ... specialized for this purpose only. -

My god man he is so fierce my heart jumped at their battles. I hope they stop it or one of them is gonna die, the black faced damsel or the midas blenny. I thought Midas Blennies supposed to be peaceful, but then again there's a chance of anything .... -
I bought a blenny from Aquamarin's new Malaysia shipment yesterday. I thought it was a Bicolor or Midas Blenny, but today I saw him bare his teeth and fangs at my Damsel. It was waiting in the rock waiting for the damsel to swim past then it try to take a bite outta the damsel. Weird thing is that the Damsel kept on trying to irritate the blenny. Please help ID and whether I need to take the Blenny out.

thanks, seems to be one of the species of the huge corynactis family. Better start feeding it, it's pretty. By the way I can't say enough praises for Kent Marine seasquirt, marvellous device! -
Just some feedback to all. I did 3 changes to my aquarium on the evening of 18th. 1) Put all my rowaphos instead of being in a bag exposed to the overflow in the sump, put it into a 2littlefishies fluidized reactor with a cheapo rio pump driving it. 2) put in peter.tee's cheato in a basket at the water return compartment of my sump, fuelled by a 5100K Philips energy saving bulb (150W equivalent). 3) Put in a blue tang after I decided that it didn't have ich after all. Result? Night of 18th all the algae on the live rock disappeared. And it's a lot of algae on the live rock too. Man I'm chuffed!

Thanks sir. Will try to make it before 6pm. Maybe just after lunch.

Hi guys, I've searched Coralfarm and Iwarna - both no stock. Where to get? If there's any kind reefer who would spare me a handful, I'd be appreciative!

Recently disaster struck my home. I have a 2 section pond (2.3K litre + 500 litre) and I forgot to turn off the tap for 6 hours and chlorine killed ALL the koi and goldfish and everything else as the pond overflowed for 5.5 hours. Aiyah don't talk about that anymore. As a result, my decision is now only to keep the 500 litre pond as status quo keep goldfish. This section can be totally separated from the 2.3K litre pond. The 2.3K litre pond is in my home itself, on the side. glass doors separate the pond from the living room. My dream is to place the marine tank on top of the 2.3K litre pond and use the pond as a mangrove refugium. Let me share some thoughts to get your thoughts up.... I've been toying with it one minute after my kois died. It would take money to do this above and beyond normal considerations. About another S$5K worth at least to line another waterproof lining for the mangrove (because once I start to plant the mangrove, I can't remove for maintenance, so the waterproofing better last for a few decades!). Other than that, I'd have to buy a couple thousand litres of seawater, which is only S$100-200, BUT WHO IS GONNA CARRY 100 JERRY CANS? Mixing 2K litres is probably the only option. What plants should I have for the pond refugium? Like: http://www.aquacon.com/vip.html most of the plants are bloody algae, I need real bigger plants. The algae will form some type of scum and the project will be scrapped at a further cost of ... incalculable. Also, I hear than mangrove plants have roots which can break rock. Obviously this is intolerable lah. Very bad is the mud I need for the mangrove refugium also. dumping earth leh ... *expletive* ... and how much earth can I dump? The mangrove root system obviously grows damn fast and will soon outgrow even my long pond, and start to break the fibreglass base of the pond. The definitive article I think for all this mud refugium, is here: http://tropicalfishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=1588 This article says the plant choice Red mangrove stated in the article: http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/4H/Red_mangrove/redmangr.htm haha read it, it reaches 80 FEET in height. MAN! It will take over my house, and AVA will be all over me man. As for examples on the net, this guy's setup is most like our dream: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-12/totm/index.php Because my system is exposed there is some danger of salinity and water levels going to hell. I'm considering an electronic solenoid topoff system. I think I might lose maybe 5 litres a day. Obviously the worst worst thing about this arrangement is ... *expletive*.... refrigeration. I have some ideas on this, using latent heat of vaporization, called a evaporative cooler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler Obvious evaporative is not a great word in marine, it means dollars and RO. However, in an overclocking contest I had seen which banned the use of active cooling and refrigeration, I saw some guy come up with a evaporative solution which lowered the temp of water from 24C to 19C in Sim Lim Square, which is incredible. That guy took 9 pvc pipes connect to a single pump, and put some handkerchief on every pipe, and blow a fan on it. Incredible performance, that. But if I stand back from all the excitement, what's the real good things from this arrangement? The mangrove is only for phosphate and nitrate uptake. If I dump a big amount of phosban and purigen into a normal refugium, the same lah. Another advantage is large water buffer. Which I perform 5% changes using autowaterchanger a day about the same leh. But the main emotional draw of this is incredible great. You feel that all the 2K litre of water feeding the corals etc. wa liao so great. In any case, all this is still fantasy. Any thoughts from you gurus?
