Normal Glass vs Sapphire/Starphire Glass tanks
comycus replied to May&Bruce's topic in General Reefkeeping_
If I had the $$ and chance to start a new tank, I would go for starphire rimless. Especially for a small tank, the price difference will not be as substantial compared to a 6ft. -
I love the side view. Don't rescape la... Spend the energy on doing your 50% WC btw, was it hard to get rocks to balance on the acrylic lifts? Or it actually made the work easier?
-
bro if you are using 24 hour clock should be 2359 right? Just to avoid more confusion... up for your auction!
-
Haha yeah, corals that look alive.. With the wavebox, they look even nicer now Maybe it's the new space, but my exquisite keeps flashing and swimming in the open. Same as my male lyretail. Think the 2 of them competing for bragging rights.
-
I thought RB's aussie shipment should have been snapped up?
-
lol tt box size, quite easy to guess I suppose. hahaa need more skill and $ before I get a worthy FTS... hmm Elegance is doing ok, but not as big as before, will have to look for silverfish soon I guess.

Cauliflower soft corals do not have symbiotic algae zooxanthellae, relying only on micro plankton and other filter feeding foods. Therefore they have to be fed v. regularly, almost constantly to survive.
-
The rics will open up eventually. Prob just need time to settle in.

Long overdue: my updated scape... Tank's still pretty bare after selling some of my corals as they weren't in line with my gf's requirements and lost a few to stress after the rescape As you can see, lots of swimming space on the RHS to cater to future fishes. As usual, will only reveal the 'best' side, the other 2 views are really still crappy

Added some LED supplement to get the royal blue effect! Still can't go full LED yet as my budget doesn't allow me to be that spendthrift, but nevertheless nothing's gonna stop me from getting the crazy luminous effect!

Some pics of my new toys... Tunze Nano Wavebox. I tuned it down to 1" wave for the time being. Gonio doesn't seem to like the strong wave, will try to let it acclimatize before going back to 2" waves. Tunze nano stream 6025. Decided to get this small, efficient and relatively cheap pump to circulate water as the wavebox doesn't really help much. It only creates oscillating waves. Overall, I like this setup more than my Vortech MP20. More flow, nicer waves, and think the rest of the corals love it.

White spotted Grouper (Panter Grouper)
comycus replied to pweesng's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
wah my subtle question u also can guess! okok glad you not thinking down tt road. hmmm all fishes are just greedy. Period. Hahaa it's part of their nature, never know when the next meal is coming, so will gorge themselves even if they are full. You will need to feed sparingly. And probably want to wean them all to frozen food. Much more economical and cleaner for your water. -
Nice looking tank! I love the bubble! Hope when you mean 'restart' it just meant cleaning the tank, rescaping and putting effort back into the hobby. Otherwise if it's a real restart and you skipped cycling, might have problems again. On a side note, you will probably lose the cauliflower and queen anthias. They are considered hard to keep. Do some research now tt you're back in business and try to avoid keeping these hard fishes/corals until you gain the confidence and experience to.

Just a curiosity:Have you checked with the proper authorities on whether this idea is feasible/allowed? Correct me if I'm wrong, you plan to buy or take rocks out from the sea, cultivate them and sell them off? Has that been cleared in your lease contract too? Just wanna clarify, but it sounds like an interesting project. From a customer point of view, I will never ever buy live rock with hitchhikers. Great biodiversity but not suitable from a reefer's perspective. Just my 2 cents, and if you eventually do commercial selling, do remember to talk to our mods on it!

Got mine from Henry after he weaned them to feed on Henry's gourmet. Initially wanted to train him to eat mysis inside beta box but Henry advised me against it. So I let him out and target fed him for 2 weeks with my balloon stick. Have to make sure you feed your other fishes and shrimps first and switch off all pumps before feeding him. Funny he was never afraid of the stick wavering in front of him. Squirt out and and make sure the mysis lands within his vicinity. Took to eating mysis very quickly actually. Prob was feeding on mysis this way after 2-3 days. He soon learnt to expect food out from the balloon stick and would just wait patiently everytime he sees it. Got lazy using balloon stick after 2 weeks, and figured he recognised mysis already, so I did away with the stick. At first he would only eat mysis that landed in front of him, which was v. random. Really happy now that he has gained experience and confidence in 'hunting' for his food. Will start chasing down mysis from a distance and play a prowling game with the mysis, eventually pouncing on the mysis. Really have to see it to believe it! Just wondering now how can I train him to eat pellets now...

hmm I would rather start from less light to more light than vice versa. Coz I think cfm chop guarantee your lights too strong le Btw, I think the min. distance from LEDs to water surface is 6 inches, and even then, you should light acclimatize your corals from the bottom in a 2ft tank depth. With your pico, I guess the only way is higher lighting fixture. Actually think you are right Acrylic might not dilute so much light compared to glass...

White spotted Grouper (Panter Grouper)

Care to share your backup plan? You can probably keep an aggressive fish only tank. Lionfish, Scorpionfish, Groupers, Foxface. Prob have to watch your bioload due to their diet. These fishes might not be easy to wean off live food too, although I've seen Henry train his lionfish and scorpionfish to feed on frozen. Will be fun to watch your progress! -
Still have 4th and 5th option. air con... or... UPGRADE I'm serious, this one not counted as poison. To TS, we might have veered abit, but I think the options are pretty much as listed here. You will need something to cool temperature somehow.
-
There are quite a few beautiful 24G tanks here which you can browse through to see what has beeen done. Good not only to learn how they setup, but also learn from their experiences. Can try hunting in pasar malam to see if you can get a second hand skimmer.
-
doesn't make sense for a 5 gallon tank? Besides the iceprobe only runs at 50w. Of course it would also mean u prob can't use it if you upgrade beyond 20 gallons in future.
-
You will prob need to drill a small hole or something to fit it into your tank. Or some slight modification to that extent. Can check it out at Reef Depot. Its by Coolworks.
-
For your pico tank, fan will prob do the job. But then will have to deal with evaporation problem also. Expensive alternative could be iceprobe.
-
Maybe you can add another layer of acrylic/glass to reduce the light intensity?
-
Actually I really don't think 5 gallons is necesary to have skimmer. Tank crash means tank crash, the margin for error for such a small tank is almost zero. The additional liter or 2 won't make a difference. You will still need to do very frequent water changes to your tank to export out nutrients and the skimmer might not even be able to skim anything out. Also, the skimmer return might be too powerful, maybe create tsunami in your pico.

Just to note: the tunze is dependent on water level. Will have to top up religiously everyday or get a auto top up.
