yupz got spade tail. I think it's morphing, not 100% male yet... can see some dark purple/black colouration on the dorsal fin and the underside of the belly has a deep purple when it colours up. Just hope it morphs 100% I guess.

What kinda made me suspicious was if you load their video, everyone is amazed with this new 'technology' but when they look into the fan, nothing seems to be blowing at them? Hair never move, clothes never ripple, etc. all the tell tale signs of fan blowing just not there. Just wondering...

I think dead rock means totally devoid of all organism = cannot possibly have anymore dieoffs, therefore if you add them into your tank, won't cause a spike. But takes time for bacteria to colonize the LR, so you should dose bacteria. If you add LR, the lesser amount of time spent out of water, the lesser die off. If you want to be certain, can just cycle the LR in a pail of saltwater, add a pump for some circulation. Can do water test on the pail of water to make sure ANN is fully cycled, and you can transfer it to your main tank. (I think this is only if you're extra kiasu) btw, recommend you to get a proper test kit for more accurate readings, the ammonia alert thing works if its not past its expiry date, and once it detects and changes colour, your fishes prob up lorry already.

My newest addition... hopefully all goes well with this male, and his colouration deepens. Not the best specimen out there, but it is the most aggressive fish in the tank now. Hopefully that encourages him to turn alpha

the grey or red ones both serve the same function. Red ones more expensive because they contain extra elements or something like tt to encourage bacteria growth in new tanks. In my dictionary, it's pure marketing. I started my tank with the cheaper, grey ones and never looked back. Live rocks, biohome, any of them serve the same function of biological filtration. Not enough LR? Biohome is a good addition you can put in sump. Kiasu? Have lots of live rocks and lots of biohome. You can utilize both in your tanks. Note that biohome recommends placement in cleaned water and in the dark.

I can simply get a stronger pump such that overflow is stronger, and fuge receives 75%/25% from main tank/skimmer. Has anyone tried a sloping DSB to SSB? Are there any potential pitfalls in doing this? I'm thinking of doing a DSB at the back of the tank up to 5", sloping downards to 1" in front. Probably use LR to prop against the DSB portion to prevent sand from sliding downards. Reason for this is firstly to save cost of purchasing more sand and also because DSB is ugly looking, and the front portion of the tank is on display, so for aesthetic reasons, will only have a thin layer of sand. Thinking of using this (have to seed with some live sand though): Caribsea Aragamax Sugar Sized Sand (30 lb) Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand: 0.2 - 1.2mm diameter grain size. Also known as "oolitic sand," this grade is ideal for shallower bedsallowing dentrification in little 1"depth. The fine can pass easily through gills of gobys and other sand-sifting organisms. smooth round grains are gentle to soft bellied sharks rays. White color metal freeno ash or silica.

Logically, mechanical filter first. Fish sucked by overflow, end up in the first compartment at least maybe still can swim abit (stretch imagination abit), go to your protein skimmer? *shudders, milo milk* After skimmer, go to chiller and return back up to tank. Moving on, you can choose to add biological filtration after your 1st compartment (mechanical). If you have enough live rocks in your tank, you can skip this. Or kiasu, add more LR, or Biohome, or bio balls etc. I would recommend Biohome. 1kg is more than enough. Next up, chemical filtration. Carbon, phosphate removing media are 2 more popular media that some reefers use. Can research more to see if it suits your style. They are typically placed after biological filtration. A more effective (expensive) approach is to use 2 x Fluidized reactor so you can adjust the different flow requirements of these media. At the end of the day, KISS method works well.
