Newbie needs advice from fellow nano-reefers!
comycus replied to tribe172's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
get a nice looking container la... then maybe she won't complain so much hahaa better not happen to me in future -
bro sounds like your tank not enough pods to support them. Hope the refugium comes up fast! Anyway be careful for your 6 line yeah? Once it establishes itself, most prob will become a terror in your tank.

Jacky your 10-15% wc is not alot, maybe just 1 small bucket. Cannot leave it overnight in the toilet under the sink or something? -

To let tank parameters stabilise. It might also take longer for some salts to dissolve completely, and adding newly mixed saltwater immediately can cause wild swings in tank parameters especially in nano tanks. Think this is especially true with pH values. Some reefers even let saltwater mix stand anywhere from 2 days to a week. It will be good to test some basic water parameters of the newly mixed saltwater before adding into your tank to ensure that the values are similar and not shock your tank. -
I like the scape! wah the tunze really right at the bottom... so poor thing!!! What do you mean by water getting messed up with stuff all over? Is it salt spray?

Wavemaker for a 60x30x36cm Tank

Just to add... your Tunze skimmer requires a constant water level to work properly. Can also consider getting an auto water top up. Sometimes maid/parents/wife/children also counts as auto water top up -

Welcome tribe! 1. If you are not considering sump, do consider canister. Since you are on a budget, I recommend Eheim classic canisters. Cheap, reliable, relatively easy to use. I wouldn't go for those cheap china brands as they have been known to create more problems like leakage problems, pump spoilt etc. 2. Again, if you are on a budget, I would encourage you to invest in redsea prizm. Skimmer is a good investment. Going up the $ chain, you can also look at Aquac Remora, Deltec MCE600. This is another piece of equipment which I would stay away from the cheap skimmers. Doesn't do the job well, and might even create more problems. Equipment wise, if you are on tight budget, I would recommend you to shop ard the pasar malam section for good 2nd hand deals. Canisters are always on sale in local planted forums. Quality skimmers at bargain prices can be found from time to time here as well. I strongly recommend you to consider having a sump tank to increase your gallonage so your tank parameters can stay more stable. Also, with sump, you won't need to get a canister (but need to get a return pump), have more space to add more stuff in future. btw I stay a stone's throw away from Bukit Panjang. -

Can consider Tunze 6055 with controller too. -
I guess it would be good to stabilise the ph. Not sure how much cheato will be needed to do the job, but since Jacky's tank gallonage is quite small shouldn't take a lot of cheato right? But if really want to reverse photosynthesize, the best way would be to totally cover up the hang in refugium in black paint at all sides and a totally sealed, splash proof light so that there is no leakage of light into main tank after normal lighting period and also leakage into the refugium during normal lighting hours? Sounds v. troublesome, maybe a 24hr photoperiod or something along the lines will be more feasible? hmmm, but this hang in refugium sounds like a v. good idea to explore, especially for sumpless tanks... Another great idea for me to store and use in future if I ever do up another tank!

$30 -
I agree... tt's one fine beauty! anymore left?
-
do you really need to do reverse photo period since your main aim is only to grow pods?
-
T5s are more efficient at light output if you are comparing wattage by wattage.
-
wah I didn't know can do tt. Suggest to use this at your own risk I guess, coz will prob void warranty.
-
waah near the sand sounds dangerous. Try to angle it so tt it hits rock, wall and pointed upwards to create lots of surface agitation. tt way most of the power is actually lost at the surface.
-
tt's a great looking minimalist nano you have there! Any cleanup crew to help in your filtration?
-
I would just leave it alone, nothing to worry about. It looks like closed polyps to me, but even if they are dying, shouldn't be a cause for concern. But if it starts spreading to more polyps then maybe you might want to look into it. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing, but if I have dead polyps tt are an eye sore to me, I just pluck them out, so far nothing happened to mother colony or the like. Nice colony you have there!
-
point it at a glass wall and upwards?
-
sounds like you need another acrylic box! But the box will be algae magnet! Consider painting it black with some reef safe paint?
-
haha I'm afraid after tt pocket won't have enough to upgrade to 6 footer le! show her more of these videos la... tell her everyone keeps so big tank... looks nice right? Maybe slowly but surely she will start to appreciate bigger tanks. Or propose upgrade to 6 footer first la, then after abit of bargaining, say fine, u compromise, just get a 4 footer. Women like a good bargain!

Glad your fishes sound relatively ok. Chiller thermostat prob something wrong la, since it's under warranty, try to get it fixed asap. Just wondering, do you think it going bonkers has anything to do with it being housed inside the cabinet? When the repairman come might wanna ask his advice, I'm still wary of putting chillers inside cabinets even with fans and all. Just paranoid I guess Hahaaa don't think I can get away with proposing the HDB way, and since there are going to be alot of BTOs coming out this year, I need to plan early I think spend the $ on the bloody rock first before I get tempted by dunno what exotic aussie shipment or dunno what else... Already got my eye on this particular stone

you guys can check out the more technical aspect of the tank here: http://vimeo.com/6231364 http://vimeo.com/6231497

http://vimeo.com/6161531 Now tt's a tank to go diving in!
-
Jacky, just wondering if your fishes white spots gone? Any updates on the chiller? Hope all is well. Peter, I have a family friend who's in the line, the retail ones usually are marked up at least 100% and you are right, their cuts aren't usually tt fantastic either.
