Recommendations for Chiller for 3-2-2 Tank
comycus replied to McNugget's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
the bigger the number, the better. it also means bigger footprint, so must consider the amount of space you have for the chiller too. -
Is clear bottom or sand/gravel bottom better?
comycus replied to McNugget's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
Sis, welcome to SRC! Bare bottom makes it easy to see dead spots and clean detritus. Over time, coralline algae will also grow on the glass, so you may or may not like the effect. Sand is nice aesthetically, but there is potential for detritus build up in dead spots, and you might not be able to spot them as easily. Best to have a cleaning crew such as sea cucumber, sand sifting star, sand dollar to assist you in keeping your sand clean. -
Yoz Terry, IMHO should try to ease off abit. Most of us are here in src because of the hobby, and not some serious committee/work related thingy. Im sure everyone is curious to know the real story too, which is why this thread is still alive. Just chill, relax n everyone enjoy the hobby tog! I'm sure src wouldn't be where it is today if everyone is so serious and uptight. My 2 cents worth, dun flame me! N back to uncle Jon, I think it's better to give everyone an explanation here instead of pm to clear things up. I'm sure if it was an honest mistake, let's just accept it and move on (pun not intended).

Based on your intro, u sound like someone with absolutely zero knowledge in the hobby. No problems with that, but u should read up more before taking the plunge. Many cases of bros here spending a few grand to setup a beautiful tank only to decomm it at a fraction of the cost a few months down the road coz they didn't know the commitment needed in terms of monthly cost/labour/possible murphies. If you think that spending 5-6k to get someone to fully automated setup a marine tank, where you only need to 'top up tap water to replenish evaporated water and clean tank walls from algae weekly', treat this as a warning that you are making a big mistake. In other news, welcome to SRC bro. We have plenty of helpful threads for you to research and reefers who can help you out to specific questions if the threads don't answer your questions.

Bro, at 12mm rimless I would prefer not to run waves on your tank. (call me kiasee, but coming home to a flooded living room is a nightmare). I think your controller has random mode, so that should work out pretty well for you. My best guess is that you can set your min. and max speeds from 3-10x sump turnover rates so you can maintain a decent turnover rate from your sump. Have to do abit of 'agaration' on your headloss and estimate return flow based on the charts. I'm guessing with trial and error you will find your tank's sweet spot. For water circulation, really depends on how much turnover u want in your tank and what sort of corals you will be getting. Looking forward to your setup pics for now!

V. well thought out build, and the finishing looks awesome bro! Would love to hear more about the Abyzz, will you be using its variable speeds for return? If so, how do you intend to sync with your 2 Vortechs?

lol Uncle Jon I realised most of your breakdown of the LFS shops prices are either expensive, high, abit higher, unusually high... no mention of cheap! but then again, i think its an apt description coz the hobby is draining on the pocket Have to stress that pricing shouldn't be the overriding factor in getting your LS. You should be looking for a healthy, feeding speciman when doing your shopping. Personally, I would rather buy a $50 fish than buy a similar fish at $10 and try it 5 times (or more) before I am successful.

Changing of bio-home monthly
comycus replied to william_choo's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
You do not change out your bio filtration. Leave it in the sump. -
No such thing as master kit... Testing your parameters only take 10-15min, just gotta get used to it. Ezie: the so called master kits you are referring to have individual test kits inside them too. Depends on what brands you are buying, some are more ex, others cheaper.

wow v. long never post these kinda stuff... so others do chip in if i'm wrong! 1. Its always a good idea to get a tank which isn't deep. Really depends on your tolerance level as mentioned in 2. 2. An ideal depth should be 22 inches (2 inches short of 2 feet). I have a 260 litre fresh water aquarium and its 25.2 inches deep and find it to be a bit of a pain during maintenance even though im a pretty tall chap. Lights will punch right through as well. 22" works, but imo height has to be proportionate to length, so if you're going 6' or 7'. 22" wouldn't cut for me, but tt's just me 3. On the issue of width it all depends on how much space we have available and how much reach will we be capable of if its against the wall. 3 feet should be pretty ideal. Really depends on what sort of scaping you want too, but i think 3' is a good start. LED modules these days typically only cover a spread of 1.5-2' if you run them lengthwise, so you might want to take tt into consideration cost wise (a) the best lights to use would be LED. They are the brightest and heat emissions are very very much less compared to Halides and Fluorescents. And Halides will go kaput much faster. Think many ppl agree tt LED is the future. Since the technology is still new-er compared to others, cost wise is $$$, but we are starting to see more efficiencies. However if you are go deep like 3' height or more, think many still use MH. ( for a tank that size the best chiller system would be an artica or a custom made chilling system with a titanium rod. Titanium ftw © the best system with regards to a pump / filter would be a computerised system, Apparently this costs around $2,500 bucks - i forgot to get the name of the system. 2 different things you are talking about here. the system most likely is profillux and it allows you to monitor PH,temperature, Redox to name a few, and a million other controls as well. Good to have, but not an essential. Can google it to find out more. A more efficient method of filtration is usually done through the sump, not an external canister filter. Pumps: Red Dragon, Eheim, Aquabee (in order of $$$$ and, debatable, quality) Wavemaker: Vortech and Tunze are the more popular and $$$$ ones (d) its important to have a back up filter and for this we can get an Eheim external canister filter sump... less troublesome (e) A good skimmer would be the Bubble Magnus Hero 320 depends. $$$$$ BK and Deltec FTW

Check out the budget setups in the member tank sections. Students with limited budgets can still keep v. nice tanks. I'm not a fan of free lunches, not to the extent of asking for all the essentials. So instead, here's my 2 cents: Camp in Pasar Malam section. Good deals being cleared at bargain prices come and go frequently. As a student, I did not have $ but i had lots of time and with determination, things still can be done. No money to travel? backpack, take overnight coaches, stay in hostels, kebabs form my staple food. Same with this hobby, camp in pasar malam, be patient and you will be rewarded with excellent deals. You can check out this skimmer: Since you are thinking of keeping FOWLR, don't need to get fanciful, high powered lights. Any of those cheap chinese brands you can find in our LFSes will suffice if you don't want to wait in pasar malam. Same for wavemaker n pumps, many reasonably priced products out there in the market. Some say not as reliable as the branded ones, but if I die die want to drive car and only have $ to drive QQ, it still gets me from point A to B, most of the time. Fans to cool your tank, and auto top up everyday using your hand. Save more $$, upgrade when your budget allows.

eh... is ure tank the 'holding tub' before transferring to the wok anot? or treating it as a propagation tank?

is an understatement
