We would much prefer a sump as a sump would be able to help us maintain our tanks better I am not saying that a canister can't do its job? Making sure that the canister remains clean is important as there could be nitrate build up... I suggest you do away with the undergravel system as thats for freshwater and use the canister alone to do the job as for whether if the canister is good enough to do its job, you'll have to test it out and decide if you need a stronger one or its good enough!
