erm ... lets see .. have to let me recall my fluid dynamics.. u can calculate backwards.. state ur tank volume first .. i.e. 300L then state ur turnover rate per hr.. lets say .. 4 times/hr calculate the volume flow rate first... 300 x 4 = 1200L/hr then convert the vloume flowrate into L/sec.. 1200 / 3600 = 0.333 L/sec or 333 ml/sec so 333 ml supposed to pass thru ur pipe per sec 1 ml = 1 cm^3 gravity = 9.8 m/s^2 then the speed = accel x time speed = 9.8 x 1 sec = 9.8m/s = 980 cm/s divide the volume flowrate by the speed .. u will noe the diameter of ur pipes.. example: 333 / 980 = 0.34 cm^2 34 mm^2 is the area of ur pipe... then the final step is wat most of us noe... circle area = pi * r^2 r^2 = area/pi r = sqrt(area/pi) so .. r^2 = 34/3.142 r = sqrt(34/3.142) r = 3.3mm so diameter is 6.6 mm... so ur pipe have to be more or less 6.6mm dia .. understand ..?? just follow the step .. and change the values to ur own .. should be able to do it .. i guess this is detail enough .. if still dun understand .. then are they better for sump than bio balls?? heard that coral chip can help maintain calcium level...

hi all, i need ur advice, especially those with lotsa knowledge in filter medias. i'm setting up a sump for my 4ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft, but i'n not sure wat to use as filter media. some say bio balls is good some say ceramic ring. recently someone told me that coral chip is the best. ur opition please..!! cheers, james

hey pal!! maybe i can answer some of ur questions for u.?? the square mild steel pipes are call hollow-sections. usually 25x25x3 mm ones will be strong enough and i'm pretty sure that the welder can make it real straight. but for the price is up to them to chop u ... haha good luck!! how did i noe ... ?? i was in this line metal workshop

oh yah .. btw ... the holes at the tip... dun make it too big .. start with a small hole ... test it .. if not good enough.. then enlarge it .

Hmm.... i think the first 2 design cannot ... risky isn't it..?? but 3rd design with the 2 tubes to the air-tight bottle can work ... but must make sure that the bottle is really airtight... if not the water will slowly leak into the tank.... then before u noe it ... i made a drip auto top up a few year back... same concept... but different design .. for those who are thinking of making this... i'd attached a drawing with instructions. hey!! btw... i'm a guy with too much brain-juice to waste .. hehe if anyone of u got any DIY ideas but cannot put to realism, try emailing me... let me waste some of my brain-juices for u... as i got a thing for DIY projects ... i noe a glass merchant at sembawang road opposite seletar institute i think is call " sim brother glass merchant" something like that .. they charging $220 for 4 ft X 18" X 18 " 12 mm thick glass. $200 for 10 mm ones ... if u think the price is reasonable can try there...

hi all!! need ur advice... someone offer me 2 of his 3ft tank with sand, overflow system, lights, cycles saltwater and water pump for $250 .. but i thinking of getting a 4ft one to start with ...?? do u think this is a good deal..?? is it better to start with a set up tank.. or start afresh ..?? i'm new to this hobby.. i used to rear koi... give me some advice.. cheers
