controllable wavemakers mostly is used for making "waves" current from left to right with the correct settings. Not really a must as it might look more beauitful and the corals might like and must be suitable for this flow (some are too strong and LPS dont like it). Really depends on how you set it. Not really a must if you just point normal wavemakers to dead spot will also do. my 2 cents and hth

hmmm.. speaking of the skimmer. my deltec AP851 recently stop skimming. i have to tune the water up so high then it started to skim (after i change NSW 2 packets) after 2 days i tune back to the original water level and start to foam, 1-2 days later it stop foaming and it's not skimming as the water level drop very low. it's brought last last sunday. this hits me after i read this thread.. think must clean the eheim pump for the skimmer liao

you can use your hand to feel for 5 seconds whether any current/force against your hand in each part of the tank you think it will be lower flow. i kept a blasto in the below place and it's not doing well. 1) high flow 2) Medium flow 3) high light 4) medium light (half height of my tank) After i changed to very low/mininal flow and little lighting, it's beginning to become bui bui(fat) again.
