  1. hi kareen, shld be the other way round right? macroalgae takes in nutrients from the water to fuel their growth. a good example will be like a vehicle; no petrol, how is the car gonna move? lighting primarily is a source for plants to conduct photosynthetic activities. i wld say both nutrients and lights r juz as impt as each other. it is only logical that ur nitrate levels r lower coz ur caulerpa is taking in nutrients such as PO4, NO3, etc from the water. thus the growth. there is no hard and fast rule into setting up a macroalgae refugium. flow thru rate, lighting, type of macroalgae used, etc shld be optimized till u achieved the end result which u want, which is to reduce nutrients in water. wilfran, what is ur nutrient level like now? namely PO4 and NO3. is there a significant reduction in levels b4 and after use of refugium? specifically what kind of macroalgae u r using? growth of macroalgae varies with species too.
  2. black spots on sun coral??? eclipse??? joking. seriously, do the so called black spots move? r the black spots on the polyp or the skeleton? do u observe exposed skeleton? think better to show pic if u can.
  3. u can try either 24/7 or reverse photoperiod. reverse photoperiod: main tank lights on, refugium lights off & vice versa.
  4. yes, target feed. u can entice it to open with food. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...86&hl=sun+coral
  5. sun coral needs target feeding at each individual polyps. r u doing that?
  6. aerobic: taking place in an oxidizing environment. anaerobic: taking place in a reducing environment, oxygen is still present, but unable to support aerobic respiration. anoxic: lacking oxygen. in contrast, areas in which oxygen is not present are both anaerobic and anoxic.
  7. Petmart gives one of the most competitive prices for ehiem.
  8. hi, welcome to SRC. but doggies include SNOOPY too!!! u change ur snoopy avatar maybe got chance. joking.
  9. since it is neither growing nor dying, what's the worry here? do u want ur caulerpa to turn sexual instead? or do u want ur caulerpa to grow like wildfire, indirectly pointing to the high nutrient content in ur water? dun fret bro, juz let it be. maybe the growth is unnoticeable at this point of time. FYI, i used to hv my 1x1x1ft refugium having chaetomorpha powered by only an 11W 6700K PL light, and it grew so much so that i hv to prune every other week. so that tells u the lights r enuff and the high nutrient load i had.
  10. IMHO, 6 months is way 2 short to judge the pros and cons of having a DSB. maybe this 2 articles can reveal a little more insight, Sandbeds, Reefkeeping-Oct issue Sandbeds, Reefkeeping-Nov issue
  11. DSB is normally used coupled wif Grade 0 or/and Grade 1 sand. sometimes with a plenum too.
  12. phosphate is not the only fuel contributing to algae bloom. other worthy points to note r nitrate, photoperiod, etc.
  13. sand shifting stars feed on detritus, uneaten food, etc. surely there must be some of those in ur sandbed.

  16. use a stainless steel needle to pin the frag down on the LR. push a piece of small rubber thru needle first b4 pinning the frag. then push the small pc of rubber gently against the frag. this is to prevent the frag from sliding up the needle. the whole process shld take abt 2 wks for the frag to be attached to the LR. the the smaller diameter the needle, the better. as the wound to the frag will be smaller, thus easier to heal.
  17. well said stitch....... well said....... the reason why i suggested him to look for kenny yap for finiancial assistance.
  18. get urself a pair of sharp wire-cutter. or if u want something that looks more pro, go for a handy cordless disc-saw.
