ok. taking all ur opinions into consideration. why not i put it this way. what if i run the cannister and refugium seperately. this is to say that the cannister juz do its job of filtering the water from the main tank. and i run the refugium by connecting pipes to the refugium via gravity for the downward flow, buy a pump to pump the water up. drill a hole on the pipe so that in the case the pump fails, there will be air lock in the pipe and thus no downwards or upwards flow. think this is safest. another question is will this concept be efficient to bring down nitrate and phosphate levels in the main tank?

T5 of cuz will emit less heat than MH. but if u intend to keep sps then MH is the way to go.

what kinds of livestock to keep in the refugium? can i oso use sand that is newly bought for the refugium instead of live sand?

fuel, the size of my main tank and other impt parameters r stated in my signature below. again.... i m not using a sump. i am using only 1 pump, which is the cannister pump to draw water back up to the main tank. forget about what i was saying on the internal filter pump. i hv decidd to flow downwards wif gravity.

the flow goes in this way: main tank to refugium to cannister to main tank

water from the tank will either be pumped down by an existing pump which is used to operate my juwel internal filter or will flow with gravity. as for water getting back up to the main tank, i intend to use the cannister filter (water suction side) in the refugium.

hi all, will be setting up a 1ft x 1ft x 1ft refugium wif 6700k 11W PL for my tank. would like to know the following: 1. is the refugium size enuf for my tank? 2. what to put in the refugium........ my intention 5" sand & capurela 3. where to buy high nitrate/phosphate absorbing capurela? watercircle, reborn, CF? 4. any LS needed in the tank? 5. i m using a cannister filter, so does water from the tank goes into the cannister then to the refugium or vice versa? pls advise. greatly appreciate! pls spare me the advices of changing into a sump or overflow system. i hv heard it many times oredi....... not to be offensive, but if i could, i would hv oredi done so long ago.

1. think there is a product from reefz call rid-rust. can try. readily available from petmart. 2. at least 8mm. 3. get quality LRs...... treated LRs selling at $6 most of the time. anything cheaper.... gotta becareful that they r uncured. 4. LS not a must but good to hv. at least a dsb 4 to 6 inches. 5. LRs from 3 to 20 bucks. LS not sure. but can get LS from some reefers here if u want. or buy normal grade 0 sand from petmart at $6 per 10kg.
