Fellow newbies be careful!!!
jythong replied to Marine_fanaticz's topic in New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby
I think salinity is another issue when using Nsw. I have been using Nsw from a certain eastern LFS for years and measure salinity occasionally. I know that the salinity from this LFS always tends to be on the low side, so I sometimes top up water that has evaporated with more salt water. This morning tested salinity whiile doing water change and was shocked to find that it has gone quite low (1.016-7). I may have to consider alternative sources soon. -
I have read of several reports of this rather pretty anemone being purchased from an LFS in Pasir Ris. When I bought this myself some mths ago , I couldn't find the name for this anemone and somehow the auntie at LFS also couldn't tell me exactly what it is. It grew well and devoured food eagerly. Now I know why I couldn't ID it, because it is found in the pest section of books. It is the majano anemone and I had to destroy them because they reportedly can multiply quickly and sting your corals. It is strange that it is still being sold, despite the potential risk. Just be aware how it looks like and buy them at your own risk.

How do you handle dead fishes in the most humane way??
jythong replied to ethantang's topic in General Reefkeeping_
Back in medical school, we hold the rat by the head and then make a swift tug at the tail, hence breaking the spinal cord. This is quite humane, but I am not sure of the fish equivalent. When I accidentally stepped on my seahorse and ruptured its abdomen, and assessing that the prognosis was dismal, I promptly and forcefully tossed it into a metal dustbin, killing it instantly and hence minimising suffering. -
There are some at Ah Beng right now.

This is a beautiful tank! I have set up a nano just like yours for 6 mths and I have no problem with corals. But I have problem with fish jumping out- yasha gobies, clown gobies etc, so will need to have a lid on. I am quite concerned for your firefish, which is a known jumper

Yes, it scratches easily and I find algae removal difficult, compared to my other tanks.

The difficult angelfish to keep?
jythong replied to yeo99's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Tried a majestic, purchased at $40 plus, died within a few days. But mths ago purchased another majestic from CF, already feeding on pellets, but at twice the price. Now still doing very well. It is important to acquire healthy and acclimatized specimens. -
Thanks solo77, I am fine. RD does not have. Will try madpetz. AA not responding, am told he is not in Singapore currently.

Anyone knows which store stock the mini Aqua Lumens? Would like to get some now...thanks.

The concern is that the clownfishes may be too fast for the seahorses when it is feeding time.

My Volitany and Spotty Lions
jythong replied to cutebarra77's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
Can let us know if you are able to wean them on frozen food? And if so, can share how you did it? -
Ah Beng has them now. Look at the Updates on LFS thread. They are healthy and feeding immediately.

Just to let you guys know that sometimes, thermometer, when used for too long, can give faulty readings. My Ocean Free Thermometer, which served me 2 years, has been registering 29.8C for the past few weeks, and hence I have been reducing the chiller temp setting to down to 23C. The thermometer still read 29C. Finally changed thermometer today and realised that my corals and fish has been "enjoying" 23C for the past 1 mth. Such a waste of electricity!

Mixing clown tang with powder brown
jythong replied to jythong's topic in FOWLR (Fish-only with Live-rock)
I have released the clown this morning from betta box and they are all getting along fine, hope they continue this way. Now my only regret is that I can't introduce a powder blue anytime soon, with these two monsters PBrT and clown lurking around.
